I just downloaded ME1 off Steam onto my new laptop but when I tried to run it it crashed before really doing anything.

It booted up the steam first time use message and said something about installing directx somethingorother. I looked away and when I looked back it just said

Mass Effect has stopped working.

Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

>Check online for a solution to the problem (clicking this does nothing)
>Close the program (clicking this closes the program)

Now whenever I try to load it from Steam or the desktop it goes "Preparing to launch Mass Effect" > "Mass Effect has stopped working"

As for specifications (I'm just grabbing these specs of the Dell website where I purchased the computer in question.):

OS: Win7 Home Premium 64bit
Processor: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.30 GHz) (I have no idea what any of that means or implies ... I think it has 4 cores but that info was buried somewhere on the website so i can't find it just now)

RAM: 8GB

Video Card: 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 650M

You can't do ANYTHING with Vista / Windows7 until after applying the patches.

I ... see. Thanks for that, but how do I get the patches without being able to load the game?

Edit: I mean there doesn't seem to be an option on steam.

Edit: I think I've found it. Went to this site earlier but I must have missed the link.

Edit: Updated with the patch from here

http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html

it hasn't helped. The same problem persists.

Edit: I also tried downloading BDTS as per the instructions in the thread on this board becasuse... I don't know, it could have helped, right? It didn't. I managed to install it and all but I still can't make Mass Effect go.

I've also tried running steam as administrator because that seems to fix some of the problems.

I am now all out of ideas.

Edit: Ok, the solution:

I went into the steam folder on my computer, found the ME Launcher and ran that directly (as administrator) and now it seems to work fine. It's a bit of a round about way to launch Mass Effect but I'll take it.

Hopefully there isn't some new problem waiting just down the line now. ;)
