There was a comment in another thread on the board right now that got me thinking about the way magical items appear in the game (about how common they are). But because posting off that comment would have been off topic, I continue here.
The OP in the other thread mentioned the rarity of magical items in Baldur's Gate, I didn't play BG, but the sounds of magical items being rare is very... satisfying in a way; all items being magical really add motivation to get them and it adds interest to the game. I felt that the amount of named items in DAO and 2 made everything feel less special (however, certain items like the Juggernaut set and the Rose's Thorn stood out because it required effort to get them).
Don't take this the wrong way, but Skyrim did it half right: lots of common items, few magical ones... the problem? the majority of the magical ones were bland. Perhaps if we had more common weapons, and more interesting magical weapons in side quests it would give the player motivation to explore the game further (also, side thought, more tough and rewarding fights like the Juggernaut Armour quest and Gaxkang would be great!)
Thoughts?
Also, Alternate Idea: What about something like ME2 where the loot system is done away with and we pick up new types of weapons along the way? I'm on the fence about this, but leaning towards no, but I thought I'd post it to see what others think.

I would also prefer magic items be rare and hard to get.

Intriguing.

You're talking about converting Thedas into a low magic setting. Low magic settings aren't really my cup of tea; DA2 was pushing the boundaries of my taste.

No more magic stones that use indoctrination unless they explain how they work and how it affects people.
