Personally, I played on Friday for the weekend operation. I earned about 500k credits, but didn't get a single new weapon, piece of gear, medi-gel capacity #6, or reset powers card.
I love ME3 MP, but that was sort of depressing, and I just didn't play the rest of the weekend.
What do you think Is the reason for the decline of players in multiplayer?

According to Major Nelson, ME3 was ranked 16th in the top 20 XBox games played last week. It has been there pretty consistently. So the population isn't dropping, at least on XBox.

It just gets boring, like all mutliplayer games do, for me at least. Bioware has done a really good job with it though. All the free dlc updates were amazing, and extended the life of the multiplayer by a lot.
It still has a fairly large and active community in my opinion. I don't have issues finding games on xbox live.

New games coming out, lack of patches to fix glitches, fighting the same 3 factions on the same maps over and over and over and over and over..... The horrible store system that requires playing the same game mode against the same 3 factions on the same maps over and over and over and over and over and over again.

A few reasons that I can think of are the number of random disconnects that happen, the nerfs of certain weapons, the amount of bugs/glitches in the game, the repetetiveness of the multiplayer, the frustation of the random equipment store, the age of the game itself, and the releases of new games with co-op multiplayer.

The fact that the gameplay has become very samey.
The fact that the younger people are now finished with summer vacation and have shool and homework to deal with.
The fact that people are getting excited for games that are coming in the near future.

truth is we don't know that the number of players is really decling. Sure, many players left the game for good or they just play on operation weekends, but they are replaced by new player (lots of low N7 in the lobbies lately)

it has been 6 months. one mode...horde mode...does get boring without the infusion of fresh blood every now and then.

It seems to me, and many others, that players are heavily infatuated with the idea of maxing their manifests. I get it, in the sense that it's a challenge and that it takes effort. It's a big gaming achievement (assuming you maxed your manifest legitimately).
I think this twists a HUGE part of the community into something very, very ugly. We read, or infer from thread titles all of the time about the butthurt people that get "screwed over" by the store all of the time. Granted the creation of the store is the cause of all of this butthurt in the first place. What I can't understand is why we don't just take what we get and make the best out of it and just have fun, as if having that one UR you're missing is going to make the game a million fold better than it already is.
People who complain about anything that isn't gameplay oriented (please don't be overly-analytical and say that the store is gameplay oriented), probably just.. shouldn't own this game.
Maybe it's just me but I get a kick out of trying different class setups and loadouts on the daily, it's what keeps me going. What doesn't keep me going is complaining about a store system's mechanics because it didn't give me my precious Harrier, or because it trolled me with Level IV ammo consumables. Regardless of if you got some uber-fantastic UR, you still got something that expanded your gameplay, like it or not, in some way or another. You are just choosing to see the bad in everything BioWare does.
I apologize for the wall of text, but Jesus people. Just play.

I have severely curtailed my playing time lately mainly because now that I only need to upgrade my ultra rare weapons it seems I only get lvl 4 ammo from both specter and premium specter packs. Not for lack of trying either, 6 sp's and 10 psp's and not a single weapon upgrade, yet before I was at least getting them occasionally. So whether just bad luck, or something has changed in the RNG, NO REWARDS EQUALS NO TIME RISKED FOR ME!!!

While I hate nerfing, I have to be honest here. Nerfing really had nothing to do with it. I have been playing much, much less simply because I started playing a different game. I didn't think I was bored of Mass Effect, and to some degree I'm still not. Love the game, but I just downloaded DCUO and started playing it...next thing I know, I realized I haven't played Mass Effect 3 in some time. On thing that does put me off of wanting to play ME again is the damn RNG. I might be more motivated to play if I felt like I could get some new guns to try out. I really don't feel like grinding for hours, dealing with disconnects and so on for nothing (been doing it since launch). Heck, maybe even subconsciously thats why I don't play much at all now aside from weekend events.

The very last game I played was over the weekend. I'm not giving up completely on mp, but the shine has worn off. I was playing a gold match the entire way through, we got to the totals screen, credits were awarded, I exited to the lobby and then I exited the lobby...and I was not awarded any credits. That's a first, but it really peeved me off. It was the icing on the crap cake.
The more they nerf and the less real problems they fix, the more people who will go on to play other games. At least this has given me the opportunity to play some neglected games in my library.

People get bored with games over time, that's simply the way of things. Sure many people have left due to many of the game/BioWare's shortcomings but I think the former is the main reason for any decline.

I think there are several reasons. And other games have been around awhile yet are still played long after you would think the newness wore off and the game should have faded away.
Number one, is the bugs. There are just too many to make the game consistent and fun and they happen too often. This included invulnerable enemies, dropped players (bad or underpowered servers), vanguard, the horrible store (that almost half the time alone drops players and has crappy chances of getting anything worth while for credits and time spent playing the game). If ME3, Bioware, and EA needs suggestions or pointers, look at ours on the forums, or other successful games and how they handled similar issues. Other games have campaign modes, stores with random weapon combinations or custom features to let you edit each major part of a weapon (like 4 or 5 slots not just 2 as in me), and more. They have many other features and suffer far fewer if any dropped players or major bugs like ME does.
Number two, I would say is how the game itself cheats. And most know it. You have seen countless threads complaining of various actions beyond reason that enemies or individual enemy units do. The Geth right now are probably the worst cheating enemy faction.
Number Three, I would say is the balance changes. Not that they change things is bad in and of itself, but if you change and not so much for the better, it is bad. Plus the changes in all honesty are not evenly balanced equally changed across the board. For example, if you have new characters with stats way higher than the combined stats and skills of the class/type of the lead character so much so that it is virtually left behind after other characters (who often already start out with higher total stats by comparison) are buffed even more. Then where are the beginners gonna start? Too far behind and too weak to be interested. Even bronze level missions/games have been increased a bit in difficulty from when most of us started. So that frustrates and drains the pool of many potential New players. Older players get annoyed that their favorite, power, or character, or weapon is nerfed and the enemy is buffed. Most of us do not mind a challenge, but we do mind frustrating games and this one has been going in that direction. If you want harder games, do it with out making the old standard levels overly buffed by simply adding more difficulty levels and modes.
Number four, it is getting same old same old, the same small selection of small maps and the same 3 enemies. ME3 online needs some refreshment in the way of bigger maps, more modes, and more enemies and probably more levels to satisfy the hardcore 1% gamer that finds even platinum easy as well as the beginners and novice players that are challenged by even the old bronze missions with level 20 characters maxed weapons, and a full sized squad. You cant please all the people all the time, but you should try to please the largest consumer base first and a broad spectrum later if possible. Then you can cover most of your bases.
Number five, compared to other games, as mentioned above, ME lacks alot of the most common and desirable features in a True online MP or Co-Op game. So in the end it is a interesting side note but not a major MP or Co Op online game. And in BW's defense it was never meant to be. Though perhaps, with luck, it may change. If they want to truly compete and make a great MP/Co-Op full featured game, they have a ways to go to measure up to the others. They do have a decent start, but unless they address the bugs, dropped player issues, and consumer requests and consumer desired features, they will not stand a chance.

Yeah...I would've thought THIS was the most obvious reason why numbers would've declined.
Hell, according to the numbers from the previous operation, the game still retains 75% of its playervase from its start. A 75% retention rate for a game with only one mode?
In what universe is this considered BAD?

The fact that the ending of ME3 is such a trainwreck?
But seriously, it's just an aging game in video game terms, and people are moving on. It will still keep it's dedicated fanbase for a long time, however.

I think it's just a function of time, and the RNG store after you max your rares. I still play, but those two factors will lower interest in the game over time for some players.
p.s. in the big picture, ME3's multiplayer has kept people's interests a lot longer than might have been expected, the DLC has kept things interesting much longer than most multiplayer shooters.
