I would personally prefer if it was not included, how do the rest of you feel?

I think that would suck. Bioware is pretty much the only company that acknowledges homosexual gamers and allows them a form of in-game self-representation. As a homosexual, I want to see more people like me, being more fairly represented in media in general. Aside from the characters of Bioware, and a few gay superheroes, there's nothing out there for me at all.

Further to that, I personally don't give a **** about "roleplaying experience", but for people who do, I think anyone with half a brain would acknowledge that a person's sexuality has a big impact on their lives, and that losing the ability to express that dimension of their character would be a negative.

It's one of the few things Bioware has to offer that most standard fantasy RPGs do not.

If it's anything like DA 2, then NO. It's a waste of resources. I completely ignore romance option in DA 2 because I dislike restricted one dimensional interaction. Hmm.. if any companions are anything like DA 2 then I prefer we just go back to Neverwinter Nights' henchmen system. DA 2's companions are as shallow as Neverwinter Nights' henchmen anyway.

Yes. Wouldn't get it if it weren't included. Part of what makes BioWare games great is their focus on character development and relationships. Not just romance, friendships and rivalries too. While friendships and rivalries would presumably still be in the game if they took out romances, the lack of being able to progress your relationship with characters in a romantic way would be sorely missed. Have you even played through a BioWare game and not romanced anyone? It's not that good. The story just isn't as interesting and the game goes from being great to average.

There are a million other games and RPGs out there that don't have romances or straight up don't care about character development. If you don't like romances you can go play one of them. Don't try to get BioWare to take away the one thing that really sets their games apart in terms of storytelling.

I don't mind them, as long it's not DA2 styled romances. I've never really felt Hawke knew Fenris when she was with him (the time gaps didn't help).

Yes, obviously romances aren't perfect and they aren't to everybody's taste, but they should and will be in DA3. A player will want develop their character through romances and not just combat.

I think I might have done one of them in DAO? Once I realized that it didn't really have any impact at all, and I didn't get any side/companion quests or anything for it, I didn't bother with them. I didn't do any of the DA2 ones, so I can't comment on those. Personally I wouldn't care if they were removed.

Edit: I can't really think of a good reason why they should be removed though.  They didn't seem too resource intensive.  A few extra lines of dialogue and a splash screen or two of awkward cartoon pron, I guess we might be able to get an extra dungeon level or something out of it.

I like the romances, they add a little extra something to the games. Romances offer a cool way for me to become a little more emotionally invested in the story being told.

Well, considering I'm a hopeless romantic, I'd have to vote yes to romance.  I can't say I'd like a romance as the main plot, but romance in a game is a nice option.  Just think of them as another side quest.

Agree with this. Especially the bold.

But romances will be in the game. Just have to hope they do it right.

I would maybe say that it is one of the few things Bioware does that sticks out and matters to YOU. Having multiple ways to build a class, or to have non-combat skills when you level up, or to know exactly what my character was going to say at any time, or any number of things that happened in DA:O and did not really happen in DA2. Not trying to derail the thread, but to just give some insight - when people complain about Bioware abandoning these parts of the game, it is just as important to us as if Bioware abandoned gay romances in the next DA game.

To get back on topic, romances have become signature to the Bioware brand, just like choices or branching dialogue. While I think they are featured pretty strongly in more recent games and have become increasingly easier and easier to 'win' (as compared to Baldur's Gate romances, which were so difficult to navigate, you could 'fail' the romance without even realizing it), it is what people expect. Removing elements of your game that people have begun to expect is bad product management, regardless it it is 100% crucial to the core game's purpose.

Hmm...

DA ][ did some of it better than DA:O. DA:O did some parts better, but I think that was more the logistics of it as opposed to the romance actually being better.

As I outlined in a thread of mine, DA:O romances have no story purpose, and have little RP purpose, when compared with DA ][.

DA ][ romances are spaced out because of the whole time separation thing, but it fit somewhat well with the story.

Regardless, I'm not sure it's necessary. As I said there.

All of my favorite stories have a romance arc in them. I wouldn't say they were necessary, but they certainly add a lot to the substance in stories.

Absolutely! But they need to implement them like they did in DAO & ME1, they felt the most fleshed out and realistic, the romances in ME2 and DA2 were disjointed and felt threadbare to me.
I was fairly 'meh' about the romance in ME3 as well because if you didn't romance Liara there wasn't much to it.
But definately romances again for me!

I've a confession: I liked the gifting mechanic in DA:O. I want to give presents and get sex in return. And friendship if they feel like it.

I like the romance option. It increased my interest in the game and made replay more fun.

You don't have to romance anyone. Why are you advocating removing something other players enjoy ?

If you don't like romance in your game, you always have the option not to pursue it.

If you generally like a romance arc, but don't find the romanceable characters in a given game appealing, you still have the option not to pursue it (as my canon Shepard did throughout ME 1&2)

So there is no reason to insist that because you personally don't find any value in that aspect of the game (an aspect that you know Bioware has become known for), others should not be given the opportunity to enjoy it.

I wonder if some of you have a problem with reading comprehension.

I said I would prefer that romances not be included in DA3, then asked a question to the BSN.

If I was "insisting" that romances be removed, the title of this thread would be "DO NOT INCLUDE ROMANCES IN DA3!!!!!!!!!!" or something similar.

Just clarifying for future posters.

The romances and character interaction is the whole reason I play Bioware games. If they reduce it even more, or completely eliminate it, I simply won't buy their products any longer. They can choose to offer us something that no other company offers it's players - social interaction within a storyline that is compelling and interesting - or they can continue to water the concept down untill it's nothing and they're just like everyone else out there. Their choice.

Just like it's my choice to purchase or not.

I didn't mind it being subtle like it was in KOTOR and Jade Empire. But BioWare's recent games have really turned me off with regards to romance in games. None of it seems genuine or even worth exploring. You get a simulated sex scene followed by some cheesey dialogue.

If I was a game developer making this stuff, I'd be embarrassed. I would much rather deliver a compelling game that doesn't require artificial relationships to draw people's attention.

You're just splitting hairs. It's the same statement, just with fewer exclamation marks.

No.

Insisting would mean that I demanded that romances be removed. I have not done that have I? I stated my preference and then asked a question.
