I'm going to disagree in a civilized manner, then. I feel these two quotes are contradictory. Generally, any criticism doesn't seem to be recieved well. That's just human nature, so I don't really blame the devs. Also, the player base in general is a nasty bunch of jerkoffs.

In addition, I feel I've not seen devs interact very much at all with suggestions on balance philosophy. A question is asked here and there and players flood the thread with advice or preferences, but the responses seem a bit spotty. I've not been posting for long but I've lurked a bit and your statement is mildly frustrating. We, the players, spend much more time playing the game than you guys. We also pay to play it wheras you lot get payed to make it. Now, that's not to say I want you to implement even a single player suggestion on balance or design. I'd just like to see more discussion on it. A lot more. It may be entirely too much to ask as well, I don't know your schedules, but I'd love to see two or three solid hours a week of just banter regarding balance and what players don't like/do like between the players and the devs.

And hey, maybe it happens and I just don't see it.

Also, as "civilized" as this post is, this is me frustrated with other things and it's just coming out here. I'm usually much more mellow and admittedly a general snark machine.

<3 regardless,

Testo

While I agree it is easier to receive positive criticism, I have been in meetings where 'uncomfortable' criticism has been brought up.  The team has been very open to it, especially when presented in a well thought out manner.

That having been said, it is still a state of the environment that keeps the team from wanting to discuss it further in a public forum prone to trolling and spam.

The short answer is, yes, the team accepts negative criticism with professionalism, and accepts it well.  They just don't blog about it Image IPB

lol its ok.

Basically he locked the 5000+ post thread that was sued for discussion and finding games and such because we opened a 100+ post thread for the in house tournement we were running to keep all the tournement info in one place instead of having to look through tons of pages in the main thread. he was sent a PM asking if it could be re-opened becuase they serve 2 different purposes and are 2 unrelated threads and he basically said no (thats the nicest way i could put it) the PMs were actually then posted in the tournement thread showing teh conversation between the mod and the member. after he refused to unloick it then some memeber got very upset and teh tournement thread got out of hand and then was locked as well.

the result was the team starting up a new forum. So basically the mod pushed away a gorup of 150 members who are very promement menebers in the BSN community who have done fun things to keep people interested gave out good info, trained and coached newer memebers and welcomed anyone into the group. The same members who started speedrunning and have the record of a 10:09 platinum. who post vids and builds and fun ways to play.

Now i don't expect you to go against a moderater. I moderate on another forum and as mods we try to stick together and not pubiclly blast each other, but we do have our own seperate hidden area where we can discuss things and make votes on certain situations to keeo the memebers happy and be fair to the good members. I really feel we were shafted in this situation. I don't have anyhting against you guys at all.

I've personally always try to remain civil, I even stood up to 1 memeber who was trahsing BW and was such a jerk that he pissed of the devs at the BW comicon event with his beahvoir while demoing earth and beating platinum. and in return he reported me for harassment to which i was PMd from a mod.i explained my side and he told me to not respond and to ignore said memeber. That was fair to me so i followed his ruling. I don't agree with it personally because i was doing what BW couldn't pubiclly do (call out someone for being a jerk) but i understand how he would have to be fair to both sides. Its hard standing up for people who make a huge mistake though and refuse to fix or acknowledge it. If i wanted to live in a dictatorship i'd move to a different country

its unique. its the only rapid fire heavy pistol. and its not harder to get, just harder to level. someone could only play bronze and but only vet packs and still get an eagle.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to me. That alone makes me feel a little better.

But it's not the acceptance of the criticism we want, it's the discussion. And not even so much discussion of criticism as discussion of the game mechanics in general. You can't progress without discussion.

Example 1:

I say "I sure feel like X class is under/over powered"

You say *nothing*

Nothing is done or said on it again. Weeks later I'm pissed because this class is still (in my opinion) over or under powered. I start raging about it. Everyone is uncomfortable. Both of our girl friends pick up on our cloudy mood. They start eating too much. They gain 100lb. This makes us more miserable. We get into a fight with our bosses because we're both miserable and they said something at just the wrong moment to set us off. We lose our jobs.

Example 2:

I say "I sure feel..."

You say "Well why do you feel that way?"

I say "blah blah"

You say "Well have you tried...?"

I say "Yep"

You say "Hmm, I wonder if we did this or that..."

I say "THAT'S A GREAT IDEA! I'm glad you guys came up with it"

I'm happy.

Example 3:

I say "I sure feel..."

You say "Well why do you feel that way?"

I say "blah blah"

You say "Well have you tried...?"

I say "nope, thanks a lot man. I'm glad we had this talk. Now I understand".

I'm happy.

Example 4:

I say "I sure feel..."

You say "Well why do you feel that way?"

I say "blah blah"

You say "Well, that's basically because if we did this then that would happen and this would be overpowered and that mechanic would break."

I say "Well shucks, that makes sense. Thanks a lot brahski, have a cyber beer".

I'm happy.

Edit: P.S. bring back Jade Empire :P

It will be Jessica Merizan, Chris Priestly, and the rest of the community management team that will be reviewing the surveys.

For my part, when I am not actively working on one project or another, I flit about the MP forums bringing joy and happiness to all the good boys and girls.  Image IPB

Incidently, the survey has gone around internally as well.

If people really want to see more of a dev presence then, here's a tip:

Developers are people too.  The last thing they want to do is have people; telling them their job; telling them they suck; trying to cram their game-design / balance philsophy down their throats; or generally being jerks by saying things like, "BioFail can't patch worth a crap!", etc and the list goes on.

BSN is meant to be a place for civilized discussion.  You can disagree with each other, certainly, but there is no reason for anyone to be a jerk about it.  Although BSN's medium is the internet, this is supposed to be much more civil than the rest of the internet.  I equate this to being our home and you are all guests in it.  If you urinate in the potted plant, then you will be escorted out.  On the same note, if you are an angry, uncontrolled individual, then you will likewise be escorted off the premises regardless of whether or not you have outright broken any of the rules.  No one wants to engage that sort of person.  No matter the excuse.

We have customer service personnel who specialize in dealing with irate individuals over disputes.  As devs, we aren't customer service people.  We would like to have more open discussions, but in much more controlled and civilized environments.

Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that no dev wants a negative experience engaging people on the forums but I think everyone can agree, at this stage, BSN does not have the safe feel it once did.  Jessica, Chris, and the other BSN managers would like to see that happen again.

Devs can be a shy lot.  If they feel threatened, they will scurry back to their dark, safe, cavernous environments, and eat chocolate, cookies, chips, and other comfort foods until the scary things go away before venturing out into the light again.

I am certain none of this comes as a surprise to anyone but, there you have it.  We need to make this a safe environment in order for more dev sightings to occur.

Maybe not what you wanted to hear but, c'est la vie.

Cheers

2 things:

1. I get that, and I usually end up being a BW apologist on some of those things, like when people talk about bugs and whine about how long fixes take. I avidly avoid the story forums, because everyone there seems to just be filled with inconsolable rage towards Bioware, and it's exhausting just to see. The problem is, because this forum does exist, there's sort of a hidden sense, maybe an implication, that Bioware will be somewhat responsive to its fanbase when our concerns are voiced. When we don't hear anything at all about bug fixes and we don't even really KNOW what BW's balance philosophy is, it's sort of disheartening. I also get why you guys would want to stay out of certain discussions, because the fanbase is probably GOING to argue, and sometimes, it might be best for us all if we don't have the chance. Just explaining our side of things.

2. Where are the potted plants AT, anyways? I've been holding for hours.

1. I understand.  Yes, bugs take a great deal of time to nail down.  The vanguard glitch that the community is happy to remind us of is one of those ones I wish I could explain to everyone's satisfaction however, it would take pages.  Yes, long story on that one and an even longer one when we THOUGHT we had it nailed down the first time.  The short answer to balance changes...We don't want to make it easy.  LOL! I know, I know.  Yes, players like Redjohn will always make it look easy and when my favourite weapons are on the block in our meetings I am so tempted to defend them with all my might but I have to remain professional.  Eric, Corey, and Boldwin are the weapon gods.  They require cookie sacrifices often and get cranky when their blood sugar is low.

2. I LOL'd. Image IPB

I think you guys are doing a great job, so many companies wouldve just left the MP after they made it and let us fans drown in unbalanced weapons, bugs and a dried up DLC lake. But not you guys bioware! You've been cranking out DLC, changing things that honestly are able to annoy the crap out of you, and all around been making the MP better bit by bit. And while I may get a bit cranky when my infiltrators are nerfed, I support you guys completly and try to tape the trolls mouth shut with pure logic.
You guys are doing a great job, keep it up please!
Also, This thread has now caused me to go on my journey to save up 1000000 million credits

Well, given the feedback after launch, I think it is quite resonable to back off the hot zone and let the community team handle the front.
It just doesn't work hearing your work is sh*t over and over when you're trying to improve something.
Actually, I hardly look into the story and general forum any more.

When I got the game I wasn't able to play it for a week and peeked at the forums and saw the general rage about the endings. I closed the browser, played the game and tried to figure out what I felt about it rather all by myself. It's easy to get angry in a crowd.
Heck, I can still get angry when I think about the stuff I didn't like at the time I finished the story.
Then again, we have the MP, which has been a big remedy for me.

And in the meanwhile things seem to have cooled down a bit and you guys have Chris who even can... well, actually I DON'T believe he can knit.

Yeah I see a lot of great ideas on BSN. It would be cool if the devs came in and gave their opinions on them. Even though my ideas will probably never happen I would be interested to see what they thought of it anyway.
