On Hats, or the importance of good cover

1. Mage hats really need to be revisited and either eliminated or made stylish. In both DAO and DA2 the hats were inadequate, insufficient and ugly.
2. While helmets were not nearly as awful as mage hats, they could use a general enspiffening.
3. Ouside of the game there ought to be player wearable DA hats. I do not mean baseball caps. Baseball caps are entirely too common. Why not have out of game replicas of in game headwear? The metal ones would probably be impracticable outside of SCA events and RenFaires, but there are a plethora of hat varieties. A Qunari styled fez could be cute or a cunning little Orlesian number with a brim and feathers would be wonderful!

(Worse yet, what about the ratio of existing fans versus EA's expectations for new players that are not fans?)

Or some sort of Orlesian equivalent to it anyway.

Good hats will only be possible when hats no longer replace hair. Because good hats don't cover up all your hair.
Indeed this. Headgear should not make you look bald. Nor should it feature some screwball chinstrap/flap combo to cover up the underside.
Hat technology seems to elude many modern game designers. And has instead led to the development of the 'Hide Helm' option.
But hats with hair has actually been done, and well in games. the MMO Pirates of the Burning Seas not only featured hats with hair, but hats that accounted for your hairstyle. And that game came out years ago. Recent mmo Tera is doing decent with hats that show your hairstyle. And even have hairstyles that adapt based on your chest gear. So a girl with long hair who puts on a high collar top will wear the back of her hair in a bun.
That game also features hair with some movement to it. But thats another topic entirely. The most important thing Dragon Age 3 needs to have is Musketeer hats and eyepatches.

Finally, masks as shown above are awesomely stylish. A masquerade is such a wonderful setting.

So long as the plot hook isn't that you become what you wear.mousestalker wrote...
If DA3 adopted the theme of masks that could very interesting. You have people who adopt a mask to show a false face to society slowly becoming what the mask shows. You could embody deception and deceit in the structure of the game. It would also provide some great plot hooks.

My major pet peeve is the Rogue Champion's Hood. That insane curve jutting out the back is just nonsense.
I would love hoods that droop over and shadow part of the face.
On the subject of armor in general, I'm of the opinion that no mage robe should go below the knee. The characters do a lot of running around, it's not sensible at all, and it's something that irritates me whenever I see it, which is pretty much every fantasy game or movie ever.
If the developers are still working with the concept of the semi-fixed, malleable armor that they showed us, then I think we're in for good things. The outfit designs were very impressive, I thought.

I shall wear it at the obligatory masquerade ball where I can dance with my LI. And the reason why I'm there being that I'm rescuing Empress Celene from Grand Duke Gaspard de Chalons and protecting Divine Justinia V.
Political intrigue, assassinations, masked dancers, fancy/stinky cheese, rats with squeaky accents... what's not to love?
