NEW BG2 player

First time player of this BG2, I did not play the first one.
Only took me 12 years to try it out. Boy
what a learning curve, but worth it I hope (spells and a whole lot of them). The other forum I was visiting got shut down
but lucky for me I found this one and still pretty active for such an old game. Got a few questions for anyone who would like
to answer them. I am playing with TOB
installed and BG2 Fix pack. No other
mods or changes.
When I start the game it lets me choose either shadows of Amn
or TOB does it matter what one I choose?
Will it start from the beginning on either one? Have not tried it thought I would just ask.
As I walk around the city and look on tables or go into
houses I find stuff (gold, gems, arrows…etc) is it ok to just take them. I have with no ill effects that I can see,
but will it affect my rep or anything else?
I am playing as LN so for the most part I will like to be good, that is my
playing style for my first time. I see
that I can “Try” and steal stuff, but have not yet because I am playing a good
boy. I imagine if I get caught it would not be a good thing.
I am in chapter 2 not to far in, I have finished a few quest. I was not happy at all the Imoen got taken
from me I liked her ;-) found out she is my half sister. I do have Nalia now she’s not too good of a
thief, good thing I have Yoshimo. Nile
came with some baggage (looks like they all do) but I think I have got it all
straightened out. Got a strong hold out
off it too.
Looks like I have locked myself in with the romance with
Jaheira I just bought her a necklaces with are picture in it. How sweet I’m such a nice guy. She bugged me at first, thought she was to
much of a cry baby but she grew on me.
Plus she is a strong addition to the group. I would probably be more
attached to her if I had played the first game.
By the way should I play that one first?
Jaheira does pick some of the strangest times to strike up a
conversation, like after we just got are ass’s kicked by some Trolls. It is fun listening to her and Aerie fight
with each other, hope it does not come to blows. Do I need to keep her hair?
Currently I am working on a quest for the Coweled Wizards
apparently (Forgot his name???) is going to get me some info about Imoen if I
do it for them. But when I found (forgot
his name too ????) He talked me into helping
him so I have dropped Aerie and had him join up. Why should I trust the dam Coweled wizards
they took my sister. Hope it was a good
move I will find out tomorrow when I play again.
I do have the gold to pay gulum…. For his info for finding
Imoen but I am going to play out this Planar sphere thing with FORGOT first. Plus I guess I should go to the grave yard
and talk to a lady and find out what she has to say. I need to meet her at night, how do I know
what time it is other than if it’s dark or not?
Is there any way to just rest for a specific amount of time or is always 8 hours? Can you have more than one gem bag? I thought I bought two but I can only find
one in my inventory.
That’s all for now thank you in advance for answering any
questions..

BG does come before BG2 (SoA), but there's no real problem in playing BG2 first.

- Shadows of Amn is the main game, ToB is the expansion. SoA continues into ToB or if you want you can play the expansion on it's own (an expansion only character starts with about 2.9m xp so fairly high level and will have a small sub-set of the available equipment with them).
- Generally it is OK, shope are the ones where being caught stealing has consequences. I'd recommend you make new save games every so often so you can go back a bit if you want - not possible if you always save to the same slot.
- The only way to get her back is via Gaelan Bayle (trying to early will make it more challenging but by doing so she will be around for more of the game and have more xp and levels).
- Ideally yes but it isn't necessary. You can export a character from BG1 to SoA if you wanted. I don't think Jaheira fights with anyone in SoA or ToB. You can dump her lock of hair after she has recovered.
- There is a clock on the bottom left, move yor pointer over it to check the time (sun & moon show).
- It will be 8 hours unless you select rest until healed in the options which is multiples of 8 hours.
- If you enable the cheat/debug mode (sample link below) the CTRL/T key advances time by an hour.
Can you have more than one gem bag?
- Yes

If the container is locked, then you may only open it (and plunder) while nobody is watching. If the container is not locked, then contents are free for the taking.Easye142 wrote...

Romance dialogues come up if 1) a certain amount of real time has passed (that means: paused time counts to this as well, while skipped time (ie: resting or travelling) does not) and 2) the location is favourable for romance. Some conversations require wildernis, others require rest. All require a certain distance to normal NPCs (and no combat to be taking place). Combine these facts and there are certain areas where experienced BG2 players have come to expect love talks as soon as they enter them.Jaheira does pick some of the strangest times to strike up a conversation,

When I go in to adventure mart there are some items I can't sell does that mean I still need them? It does give them a gp cost but can't sell it. Example is the extra demon heart (I don't think I need it anymore because I am out of the sphere) and I also have a dragon stone that I cant sell or put into my gem bag. I also have some books like how to build a golem, some notes. I guess I can just store them in my strong hold if I need them later.
There was a door in the Planar sphere that I could not open, but Yoshimo said it was a wast of time because it only lead to a storage closet. Do I trust what he said, seems to me if you have a locked door then there must be something worth while on the other side???? Maybe not.
Thanks for the heads up on the clock I had seen it down there ticking back and forth but did not know that I could mouse over and see the time.
I went back to the grave yard and meet the old bag, did not like her. Not sure but it seems to me that you would want to join her if you where playing a evil party. She was a bit vindictive for my taste and all in the party agreed with me so we told her to take a hike. She was not to happy about that I am sure I will be killing her at a later date. :-)
I am now heading back to the Umar Hills to try and kill that monster (I think it's a dragon?) that killed all of us on my last visit. Hopefully I am stronger and smarter now. This brings me up to another question...How do I keep my party from getting confused. When that happens we seem to hack each other up, not the enemy. I am guessing there is a spell, have not researched enough yet.
Once I am done at Umar hills I will try and rescue Imoen, not sure who I will drop? I have been building up Nalia but I rather have Imoen back instead. I dropped Aerie to add Valygar but I am done with his quest not to impressed with him, he does have some nice armor can I take it then kick him out....LOL not nice but you got to do what you got to do. .I do miss Aerie and Jaheiras little fights, and would be better to have a Cleric in the group. I took a little stroll in the tombs and ran out like a little sissy girl, but I will go back and tombs sounds like a place that running across the undead is a sure thing.
Time will tell ........
Thanks,

Some items provide protection from getting Confused when you hold them, a Greenstone Amulet charge will help, you also have the 5th-level priest spell Chaotic Commands and probably something else I've forgotten.

1-Some items, like the extra demon heart, which were essential to story progress, can never be sold. You can either just dump them when that episode is finished, or throw them into your backup storage chest (at the Copper Coronet or wherever you've had your hangout, just in case you want to be cautious about future use for them.
2-Dragon Stone? Do you mean pieces of Firkraag's hide? You can take it to the Docks and a smith named Cromwell will make you an excellent suit of armor. Just be sure to bring plenty of gp with you when you visit him.
3-Yoshi was right about the door. Every so often you come across something like that. Believe the message left by the Developers. They don't DIRECTLY lie to you.
4-Bodhi is bad news and an important part of the story.
5-There is a 5th level clerical spell - Chaotic Command - that helps protect against things like confusion, charm,...A fighter going Berserk also gains some protection. Just be careful with Minsc. When he goes berserk he really flips out and it takes a long time before Boo can calm him down. Also different helmets, etc., protect against different type of mental attack. Read the descriptions and take notes! A strong cleric like Viconia or Anomen is really helpful with divine protection and turning Undead. So are Aerie or Jaheira, but their powers develope more slowly since they are non-human Multi-ability NPCs.
6-If you have a party of six, there is nothing wrong with having BOTH Imoen and Nalia (or Edwin) in the group. Magic - whether it's arcane or divine or druidic - becomes more and more important as the game goes on.
7-Before you take on Dragons, it's a good idea to have a mage capable of casting the 5th level spells Breach and Lower [Magical] Resistance.
As Jaheira will tell you at great length, beating the game requires a BALANCE of all sorts of skills.

When I start the game it lets me choose either shadows of Amn or TOB does it matter what one I choose?
Will it start from the beginning on either one? Have not tried it thought I would just ask.
Someone adequately answered this, but for completeness' sake I will answer as well: Shadows of Amn is the baseline game, Throne of Bhaal is the continuing adventure that takes place after Shadows of Amn. You can start at either, your choice, though you will find some loot in Shadows of Amn that you just can't get anywhere else(like Carsomyr, the holy avenger sword). In terms of ensuring you have the most power possible, it is best to start at Shadows of Amn. Actually, if you're truly out to max out all power, it's best to import a savegame from baldur's gate 1 and get the XP boost and the other optional items(though the default items are pretty good too).
As I walk around the city and look on tables or go into houses I find stuff (gold, gems, arrows…etc) is it ok to just take them. I have with no ill effects that I can see, but will it affect my rep or anything else?

Your alignment will largely not be affected by anything you loot. Always save before looting(quicksave is my favorite button) items from chests and the like, especially if there are NPCs about. Some places you can loot everything and no one will say boo to you. Other places they freak out if you look in a bookcase. Also, have your thief(yoshimo usually) checking for traps constantly. They're not usually very hard to spot. If someone calls the guards, they'll go hostile. If your AI is on, you may accidentally hit the hostile NPC, and if you kill them you will take a 10 reputation hit. In general you want to avoid having people have to call the guards on you, wait till they're out of line of sight of the character doing the looting. Some times, you just can't loot without having them call out alerts, so shrug your shoulders and move on.

There are three romances for male characters. Aerie is the good-aligned choice, Jaheira the neutral aligned choice, and Viconia(drow elf) is the evil aligned choice. They all have good romance plots and are interesting in their own right. Playing the first game is not required, and to be honest, it didn't age well. There are mods like BGT that allow you to play BG1 using BG2's engine, which I did. Instructions here: You'll have to buy the first game separately, though. You do not need to keep her hair. It's a plot device to help her recover from Baron Ployer's curse.
Currently I am working on a quest for the Coweled Wizards apparently (Forgot his name???) is going to get me some info about Imoen if I do it for them. But when I found (forgot his name too ????) Tolgerias. And he never does get you that information. Valygar Corthala. And you don't have to keep him in your party, but you do need him to enter the sphere. Once you're done the sphere, you can probably ditch him somewhere if you don't want to keep him.

Nighttime should be around hour 21(9pm) and dawn usually happens about 6 hours later. I'm sure someone around here has the precise hours but I never bothered to figure that out. It's always 8 hours rest(that's a standard rest period for dungeons and dragons games). You can have more than one gem bag, though some are glitched and share the same inventory. Most of them should be okay though. I have 3 at the moment.

The demon hearts are quest items, and can't be sold. Just drop them on the ground or keep them in your inventory if you really like having demon hearts in your bags. The Shadow Dragon Wardstone is for bypassing the shadow dragon in the umar hills. With it in your inventory the shadow dragon won't be hostile to you. This allows you to position your party in good places to kill the dragon. Once the dragon is dead it is useless and can safely be discarded. The golem book is useful, but I cannot recall it at the moment. I would recommend getting a bag of holding asap(watcher's keep should have one relatively early on, you don't have to delve too far in to get it) and keep anything you don't know what it's for in that, just in case.
There was a door in the Planar sphere that I could not open, but Yoshimo said it was a wast of time because it only lead to a storage closet. Do I trust what he said, seems to me if you have a locked door then there must be something worth while on the other side???? Maybe not.
I cannot remember about that door specifically, but there are a lot of doors in this game that don't actually open. Questlines that never happened, generic areas that were repurposed, that sort of thing.
Be aware that once you go to rescue Imoen you are locked into a multi-chapter journey and cannot return to Amn until you complete the journey. I would suggest getting to around level 12 or 13 minimum(more is always better) since you will be going through some extremely challenging locations and you won't be able to backtrack once you've passed through.Once I am done at Umar hills I will try and rescue Imoen, not sure who I will drop? I have been building up Nalia but I rather have Imoen back instead. Also, I don't want to spoil you, but it will not be necessary to drop any characters if you go to rescue Imoen with a 6 person group.

After going to Valgar’s cabin and asking him to join me to the Planar Sphere I had left Aerie in his cabin.
Made it through the Sphere and then decided to go take care of Yoshimo’s issue with the Shadow thieves. After finishing that quest I had picked up Edwin and sent Valygar back to his cabin. So next on my adventures was to go back to Umar Hills and try to kill the dragon.
Every time I tried to kill the dragon he worked us over really good so I gave up until I was stronger or had more experience with the game. All I could notice was that magic was the only thing doing any damage to him so I wanted to get Aerie back to help with healing, and bring Edwin to keep the heat on. (had him stocked up with fireballs)
Anyway the romance problem came about after changing party members, leaving Yoshimo at the cabin until this new group (Me, Jaheira, Aerie, Edwin, Minsc, and Nalia) could kill the Dragon. I set up all my spells and decided to rest in the cabin before going to Umar Hills. The game would not let me do that so I had to go outside, on the porch and rest. After the rest we were ambushed by some bandits and they had taken Jaheira hostage and told me they would slit her throat if I did not let them take what they wanted. I told them no and that I was going to kill them. They did slit her throat and she went directly to half hit point loss, oops. So after killing the bandits Jaheira was really pissed off at me basically called me a dumb ass, she didn’t trust me anymore, and that she would never forget this.
Jaheira stayed with the party I thought for sure she was going to tell me to get lost, but did very well as we still went and killed the dragon (took 3 more tries). I do have a saved game that I can go back to have not played any further then that so not sure if she is going to blow me off now or what. Aerie seems to hit on me to maybe I’ll just romance her. Time will tell
This game is really fun btw if you did not know ;-)
