Best - A set of router bits and a lathe from my hubby :)

Worst - A silk scarf and hair pins from an in-law who doesn't have the foggiest clue (and still doesn't to this day! I've always had really short hair... wtf am I suppose to do with hair pins!?!)

Complete and full reversal from most women, I'm into power tools, camping gear and practical stuff... Not clothes, jewellery and fashion!

Aaaanyways, best gifts: Two excellent frying pans (yeah, frying pans. And they are awesome).

Worst... I honestly didn't get any gifts I didn't want :D

Worst: WoW board game, wtf?

The Warcraft Adventure Board game or the WoW board game? I have the WoW board game, and it is actually pretty fun, considering you have 4-6 people willing to spend 4-6 hours of time playing a board game.

The best thing I got was a Sweatshirt. Normally I don't like getting those,  but this one had a style and color I liked, so it was good. Either that or the $50 visa gift card I got...

The worst thing I got a bucket of popcorn and this bag of various candies. I'm not really a fan of candies and most snack foods.

This thread got me pondering... Why is it some folks buy seriously crappy gifts? Is it...
  • Because the "giver" doesn't know the "recipient" well enough?
  • Is shopping for themselves more than the "recipient"?
  • Or just sheer laziness?
Boggles my mind, really!  It doesn't have to take long or be a difficult task if you put just a bit of effort into it. Hubby and I went shopping last-minute for each other's gifts this year: I got him a small oak maturation keg for his port, he got me a 200+ pieces set of Dremel accessories... We're both over-the-moon ecstatic with our gifts... Total combined shopping time? Roughly 45 minutes!

Don't worry, mate... There are plenty of us women out there who are into "power toys" (as I like to call them.) You'd be surprised! :P

Best gift I received this Christmas was we were able to bring my Mom out from the nursing home to my sister's place for Christmas. As it is likely going to be her last, it was extra-special to have her close.

I guess I can have a worst present now... I had to take a tshirt back to the store today. I'm usually a large mens for tshirts, but this particular shirt was obviously modelled on a very thin man. You could clearly see my nipple definition through it and it hugged be so tight it was awkward to move.

I'm sure some people go for the "ripped" look, but give me a loose tshirt, jeans and a hoodie any day!

^_^

I thin its all of those reasons...plus a few more.

  • The economy sucks balls. People dont want to spend money even the only way it will get fixed is if we do spend
  • And say someone is buying for a group of people....they think that because one of the likes something the rest of them will to. My gram has 2 grandkids(not counting me) they are ages 3 and 5. In MY stalking i got a transfroming matchbox car....and im 17, perfect example;)

That's the beauty of living alone and relationship free, I always seem to get myself the best Christmas presents every year!

I have more fun buying gifts for my family members than receiving them. They have no idea what to get me most of the time so I just tell them "Shirts, large, can't go wrong there!"

Couldn't help but chuckle at your Matchbox gift. Nannas tend to forget about the age factor... It's just part of getting old. You got some good points there... It never occured to me because I don't have that many folks to shop for in the first place and I forgot about the crappy state of world economy (mainly because it's still doing quite well in Australia.)

Hey, I wouldn't mind a Transformer for Christmas, it could join my various other collectibles!

I wish I'd had a little bit of future sight when my son was growing up, I'd have bought two of most of his toys. One for him to play with and one to collect lol!

He had all of the original metal Voltron lions that fit together to make the robot, and the original Optimus Prime (1st generation)

GOOD:

Full-hd 40" tv o/

Blu-Ray player o/\\o

Wooden ocidental-style 1'x1' dragon (it's not painted, but who cares? =O)

Three books - one about dragons and one from Tolkien \\m/

$150 in real cash

Vacation at work XD

Lots of chocolate

BAD:

My 3G modem wasn't working in my notebook this entire holiday/weekend, and since I was away from home AND signed up to play rpg online with my friends in TWO of these nights.... yeah I'm pretty much screwed with them =~~

Best gift: my father bought me a red 1974 VW beetle! (poor thing is falling apart but i will fix it and use as my everyday car)

Worst gift: Striped pyjamas from my grandmother. It's nice when you are 7, not 29. Obviously i thanked her very much and ...tried it (ugh). But i think that thing is gonna spend a loooooong time in the bottom drawer.

Everyone close to me knows that if they don't know what I want or I haven't specifically mentioned something, then they should give me a giftcard or cash. I only had two "Holy crap that was the most thoughtless gift ever" gifts.

Best: Money and the shopping spree my grandmother took me on.

Worst: A jar of dark chocolate covered mixed nuts from my mother-in-law or the American Express giftcard.

Now, the giftcard itself was wonderful, it was just the manner in which I received it which ruined it. I won't get into it, as it would be a long story, but the manner in which I received the giftcard made me feel like crap.
