DA2 Art Style is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen - why all the hate?

As an artist myself, I have fallen in love with the DA2 art style. Sure, the assets get WAYYY overused. But the actual aesthetic itself, WOW.
  • It's not generic
  • It uses siullete based morphology
  • It's neither gritty realistic rubbish, nor super fantasy world colorful - it's very painterly.
  • The design is incredibly consistant - althugh that could be because of overused assets...
  • It bathes in light, which is RARE in modern games, which tend to love gritty, muddy shadow - ergh
  • Armor is stunning, yet not too crazy (yay for no boob plate armor on the female hawke!)

    Some Criticisms:
  • The hair styles don't always fit the overall aesthetic
  • The hairstyles are a bit too young looking - about 50% of the hair in the character editor make femhawke look like a 12 year old girl, damn wierd and a little bit creepy.
  • Overused assets :P sorry, you guys probably hear that a lot.
Overall, I think it is absolutely stunning, don't you dare go back to DA:O style BioWare - it's so generic and would probably suit something more like a Boulder's gate sequel or something - I know many DA:O fans love Boulders gate :)

Also, sometimes people say it's too "anime" - but I hate Anime with a passion (don't get me started) and yet I like this art style?

Some great screens:

I don't like the Baldur's Gate games or anything, but it isn't boulders, haha. But yeah, I agree on all points except for the hair thing, I REALLY don't know where you got that one.

I'll add however.

The art used in the loading screens/time skips are phenomenal.

The buildings in Kirkwall if you look up at them from where ever you stand they look imposing and beautiful, which is sad that it never gets mentioned as a massive improvement from Origins and among rushing the game out, they took a lot hard work to get those done that well.

And the general backdrops in all the major set areas are very well done as well.

Also, inb4 "it is only anime trash and should revert to the amazing that is Origins" comments.

You kidding, right?

"Bathed in light?".... "stunning?"

Ha..you know I could care less if it LOOKS generic (overused, meaningless word) or not, I want it simply to look good.

the hair with fringes looks very childlike - like those creepy mormon kids.

indeed, if anything, DA2's art is an overall improvement on DA:O, I think the negativity towards the style stems from other DA failings which people fail to differentiate, such as asset overuse.

Why all the hate? Becuase the art and graphics are abysmal. OP, I suggest you play more games or visit the eye doctor.

 Yup!

IMO DA:2 just reaked of "cheap" from tip to top. Graphics aren't something which I consider a priority in these type of games, but DA:2's were poor.

I'd sooner have it generic and good than different and crap.

@EpicBoot2daFace You really cherry picked your DA2 screenie didn't you? You know I could pick a picture of Skyrim with their PS1 level snow textures on rocks and porches. Completely abysmal right?

Witcher 2 and Skyrim also have areas which look like the third screen of DA2 you just posted. You have selectively chosen evidence.

Witcher 2 is beautiful, but the bloom and ssao hurts my eyes.

Skyrim is beautiful, but some areas are VERY bland looking.

DA2 gets better from the opening, not worse.

Yeah, those screenshots were selectively chosen. You chose to portray a beautiful view of skyrim's mountains but for Da2 you chose to show a screen of the blighted land.

I chose gameplay screenshots of all three games. That is how Dragon Age 2 looks when it's being played. But if it makes you feel better I'll post some more screenies. It will only further prove my point, though.

Note that these screenshots are all very high resolution on PC. I am not deceiving anyone. If you think it looks really bad compared to other games, it's because it does.

True, I also found witcher 2's graphics very irritating.

The blood in the first screen looks very nice but everything else looks small and pixelated. It most definitely doesn't look that awful on the 360.

Anime can be richly detailed and very beautiful. Why the hell does everyone on this forum have such a big problem with it?

It's too cartoonish and boring. I'm a fan of realistic style like Origins or Skyrim looks. The armors in Origins looked like they could be crafted with medievil blacksmithing skills.  Some of the armors in DA II look like they were cut with a modern H²0 cutter. That breaks parts of the immersion for me.

Yeah, when Square does it. Not BioWare.

Origins doesn't looks much better than 2. It does have more detail, though. The art style is a bit more generic, but at least it's more grounded in reality.

I like how DA2 looks. I recognize there are a few areas that are aesthetically displeasing, like Lowtown, but they're generally intended that way. But even Lowtown has kind of a gritty appeal to it.

I also quite like the 'cave art' feel to the loading screens and the grungy art in the transitions between chapters. Many of the murals are also quite nice.

I also quite like the skies in this game. They're all very beautiful.

Not everything about DA2 is bad. There were some nice-looking areas and stuff.

But to me if felt very...."plastic"

Again, I usually don't give a squat about graphics. Gameplay, atmosphere, mechanics, design, story - those are FAR more important to me.

You can claim the poster chose a poor screenshot but it could have been a screenshot of any area. The art style of DA2 was one of the biggest flaws, it sucked all of the darkness out of the series and replaced it with bright areas and puddy-men darkspawn.

Skyrim really outclasses everything in terms of realism, huh.

I still enjoyed DA's art-style, it looked fine on the 360. I would enjoy more layers of texture and light/shadow, however. Even dungeons were super bright and clean. The art that told the history between acts was beautiful, however.

What? It looks worse on the Xbox. Try copy and pasting the address into your brower's address bar to see those screens in full resolution.

Everyone can agree that Skyrim was a visual treat from the Nordic architecture of Whiterun all the way through the snowy vistas of the seven thousand steps to High Hrothgar. But it's an exceptional outlyer. Unless DA goes from being an RPG series to an open-world exploration one, I won't lose any sleep over it.

Like to original poster, I enjoyed the style of Dragon Age II better than DA:O. DAII had a framed narrative. We're meant to be seeing the story of Kirkwall as told by Varric. It could have been more stylized and I would have been happy as a clam. Would I like DA3 to have fewer enemies exploding like sacks of blood? Sure. But it worked for the story DAII was telling.

One thing DAII has over Skyrim (if we insist on using them as a standard for every other game) is the range of character emotion. We finally have expressions and mannerisms worthy of the fine voice acting.

You need to get the HD texture pack and play in DX11

Skin tones alone are god damn impressive.
