The best parallel to a RPG fight is a real life knife fight. It's not about stabbing, but about slashing, cuting the opponent as often as possible until he passes out by shock. Of course IRL the "winner" is gravely injured as well and will pass out too. Whether they survive or not depends on the depth of the cuts and the availability of medical care.
That depends on your goal. If you want to win without killing, you try to cut, if you want to kill your opponent you will rather try to stab him because stabwounds are usually deadlier. In DAO, however, you are in most cases trying to kill.

That would be fencing. A knife fight is a brawl with a blade. One of the first things you learn in Combatives or a counter-knife course is to have more respect of the opponent who is slashing than the stabbing one. Stab wounds are potentially deeper and deadlier, but they also need to be more precise. Stab attacks are much easier to evade, and grabbing the stabber's knife arm is also easier.Tirigon wrote...

Of course the first rule would be to avoid a knife fight. If you can't avoid the fight, make him look like a coward if he needs a knife to face you.

The base damage for the two spells is the same.
Has anyone systematically tested this on some non-resistant mob like a wolf? I know the code seems to show them doing identical damage, but every time I've compared the two, the damage from Frost Weapons has been lower. It's possible that the code is bugged or that most mobs have a higher baseline cold resist for some reason.
Weren't Frost Weapons originally supposed to slow the enemy's attack speed? If so, then the lower damage could be an uncorrected remnant of the original, now discarded design concept.

Because, as said, the Cold line is a better crowd-control spell line than the Fire line. And many enemies have better fire resistance.
You can't compare individual spells in a vacuum. You need to compare the 2 lines in their entirety. If I'm training to get CoC, I am not spending points on Fire Weapons.
When you say "If Fire Weapons are better, no one will use Frost Weapons," you fail to consider that my mage doesn't have Fire Weapons because he/she is training in the Cold line!
I'm currently 85% thru the game, and none of my mages have any fire spells. Guess what weapon enhancement spell I'm using?

Also, what "many enemies" have fire resistance? Undead (frost resist) are much more common than rage demons (fire resist).

I agree that it's balanced the way it is. CoC is more generally useful than Fireball.
