loses just about everything when it's acted out in a cutscene with sound effects, but there's virtually no limit to its impact when it's presented in written form by a good mood writer.
You're saying as if you can't present emotion like that in a cinematic, you can and it has already been done many many times.
Well, that didn't take long. Well done Obsidian. Now, getting busy.
They don't actually get their money until the 31 days has gone by remaining but I am sure they are working on the game already. I think next thing we will hear is a thank you for helping reach target and letting us know stretch goals. I am guessing a video update might be done with them celebrating too.

Not well, no. Because it's not just emotion at play here that can be easily delivered via facial expression or voice tone. It's Memories. It's a thought in one's mind. i suppose they could expand the cutscene and play out some cheezy "dream-like" sequence complete with the foggy vision thing, but that's both cliche and cheesy in the extreme.
I'm wondering if this is the fastest 1,000,000 has been raised on kickstarter? I think it was about 27 hours to reach the target and under 24 hours for the million.
So the argument you're making is kinda pointless. There are some situations that call for cinematics, and many many others where such cutscenes will actually be a detriment.
I made no argument, I stated a preference, as I have said in the sentence you snipped.

Anyone know?
Yeah I was wondering the same since I've been monitoring the progress pretty steadily all day. Even if it isn't the fastest, I'd say this speaks volumes about the fans and gamers out there who really, really, REALLY want this game.

DoubleFine also raised 1,000,000 in the first 24 hours. OUYA or the Pebble may have been faster, but I'm not sure.
One thing's for sure, they need to start updating. A lot of people are still on the edge because of a lack of details, ie what is the game system going to be like, character creation, will there be a DRM free distribution, OSX and Linux, etc.

That's great. Sawyer's been going crazy. I had a good laugh at this earlier too:

I was not debating with Costin, nor do share his argument. And stressed that tis is a matter of taste, where no ddirection is fundamentally flawed. So bark at the right tree will you.
Ridiculous. We're all here watching you rant for pages on end about all your "tastes" and "preferences". We see you intensly responding to everyone who quotes you.... yet you're not debating...? Yeah, Ok. So what are you doing, then? Just Spamming this thread with your pointless meanderings?
Congratulations to Obsidian for getting the support of so many gamers, and reaching their initial goal after little more than a day! It seems there is quite some demand for a game like this, and we will see in the weeks to come just how big this demand really is. We have seen next to nothing of substance about Project Eternity yet, and we can only guess how many more backers this game will draw in over time.
Okay, we don't really know wether this whole Kickstarter thing will work out as we hope. But... the thought that it might gives me lots of hope for one of my favourite hobbies! As shown in my sig I backed some projects that I believe in. 2013 will be an interesting year, with the first KS funded games supposed to be released. Let's hope they can deliver...!

All I can tell you is to read properly what I was arguing for, and who I debating with on what presicely.
Costin_Razvan wrote... But you do sit around and ponder games like TW2 for weeks on end in regards to story. Cinematics are irrelevant in their own right, but when they serve the story they make the story better. The purpose of TW2 intro for instance wsn't to have an awesome cinematic experience but also to add to Letho as a character, that he is an intimidating badass son of a **** and it did achieve that purpose.
My argument is that a story is good when it has voice acting, cinematics and graphics because they work to serve it, they add an immersive experience to the game's story.
Not nearly as long or as much as I've delved into Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age Origins. Sorry, I know it might be difficult for you to comprehend, but cinematic games with third person characters- no matter how much I might enjoy them- are ultimately pretty forgettable to me. This is a preference and not something I'm going to debate.
On topic, the Obsidian guys are going nuts on Twitter. So cute. Avellone's been drawing all sorts of scribbled pictures and Josh Sawyer giving the raised eyebrow to the Kickstarter page was hilarious. It's fun to see them excited. They have their work cut out for them so great that they get to enjoy this day. Also they didn't get nearly the kudos they should have for Fallout New Vegas, so it's nice to see the gaming community rectify that.
$1,117,465 hell yeah!
BioWare called us a vocal minority, those who hated arcadeness, jRPG and AWESOME BUTTON RPG. Well, looks like vocal minority managed to gather a million $ to support a game they wanted.
To add salt to the injury - that money could be with BioWare, should they not turn to Call of Duty crowd and turn Origins into abominable Dragon Age 2.
Now, looks like BioWare will have some competition in the future.

And this is just in one day! They could break 4 million by October 16, which seems like quite a long way from now.
The profound level of Win here has yet to even play itself out!

I rest my case. I have better things to do than to pick your posts apart sentence by sentence and determine which one constitutes "an argument" and which one is decreed by you to be untouchable "taste" and not up for debate <gag>
They'll make a game, but it will likely have almost no cinematics, voice acting and so on, and yes I do consider these important: Alpha Protocol's Halbech betrayal ending would be vastly inferior without it's graphics, cinematic, and voice acting.
I have no interest in pledging for this or buying this.
So you don't want an RPG. That's fine, plenty of those other types of games around... but not as many RPGs though.

I'm not so sure. The "awesome button, cinematic, arcadish-style" folks might overlap somewhat with the BG/BG2/Planescape folks, but I think they're mostly two different blocks of consumers.
