Kind of unfortunate that they're not going with a DAO style view. Switching between isometric and over the shoulder would add a lot more to the game.

But, they have a very limited budget. I guess it's unrealistic to expect something that would likely take up the majority of it.

I was considering giving to this, but after Avellone shot his mouth off in the interview about how he was tired of an entire section of gamers, I'll hold off.

Please try to play Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment on the X360 or PS3 and then get back to us.

I don't understand why people so eagerly fall for marketing.

It's going to be exactly like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, and Icewind Dale. If you haven't played those: it's goint to be kind of like the DA:O far out and above camera on PC, but closer, if they go to the same zoom levels as BG or PS:T. And obviously with a higher level of detail.

GameBanshee claims that the graphics will be pre-rendered in 3D and saved to a 2D background image like in BG and PS:T. I think the character models will be fully rendered in 3D though, as that's what a number of other KickStarters and Indies have done.

I really doubt it's going to be "exactly" like them. That's just marketing.

They've stated that it will be a fixed isometric camera and real-time with pause. That's exactly like Baldur's Gate.

But--pre-rendered in 3d and saved to a 2d background--huh? Not sure what you mean. Can you give an example? Like Magicka?

They take a highly detailed 3D model, and take a snapshot/image of it. That's your pre-rendered 2D background.

Examples? Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale. Those are the only examples I know. If you've played Rage, you could sort of think of it as a 2D version of that, I guess.

Looks good, but I'm not all too wild about turn based combat though, I'd prefer an RPG with real time squad based combat similar to WarCraft III's.

It's not turn-based at all. It's real-time with pause.

I'm not sure what you mean here...do you really think this game is going to be anything other than what they've explicitly said it was going to be?  Do you think they're going to pull the rug out from under all of us?  They aren't BioWare, I trust them.  This is Black Isle...err... Obsidian we're talking about here.  The grandfathers of the 2D Iso-cRPG genre.

And TIM CAIN, my god...Mr. Troika himself.  Josh Sawyer....Chris Avellone...Feargus Urquhart...

?  Who asked you?  Not to seem unkind, but this game isn't for you (EDIT:  not that this can't attract people, but only people with open minds that don't want more of the same old garbage this industry keeps putting out year after year).  This game is for fans of Obsidian/Black Isle, the great and talented developers they have on staff, and fans of the golden age of cRPGs ranging from Baldur's Gate to Fallout to Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, and beyond.

Obsidian has nothing to prove because most of us already know what they're capable of.  Why do you think their very name raised over a million dollars in a day?

There is no definitive answer at the moment but I would be very, very surprised if they didn't include a female gender option.

I hope so.  I'm not prepared to make the assumption though and just back it.  Wasteland 2 and Dead State were both clear on choice of gender in character creation from the beginning of those projects.  Deciding to back those projects became easy because they provided lots of information.

If it helps, the kickstarter page had this:

You’ll create your own character and collect
companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but,
with your continued support, through future adventures.

So I'd assume yes on gender options?

Anyways, super excited for this.

Excellent! :)  I'm now a happy camper and have backed the project.

At this rate with the Kickstarter games I have to look forward to, and the backlog of older games I have yet to play, I can happily ignore the big publisher's offerings for the next couple of years.

$1,117,465 hell yeah!
BioWare called us a vocal minority, those who hated arcadeness, jRPG and AWESOME BUTTON RPG. Well, looks like vocal minority managed to gather a million $ to support a game they wanted.
To add salt to the injury - that money could be with BioWare, should they not turn to Call of Duty crowd and turn Origins into abominable Dragon Age 2.
Now, looks like BioWare will have some competition in the future.

Errr, just to keep things in perspective, look at the total number backers.

And I say this as a contributor that loves Obsidian as a developer.

I'm open-minded. You're the one that's close-minded here. you've convinced yourself that it will be EPICAWESOME before even seeing anything. That's just as closeminded as saying everything will be ZOMGAWFUL.

I'm waiting until we have hard data to judge the game. Forgive me for doing so.

I'm getting South Park but that's it, maybe Dragon Age 3, if BioWare makes a 180. Otherwise, I've got a bunch of KickStarters to play. Wasteland 2, The Banner Saga, Dead State, Shadowrun Returns, and now Project Eternity. I'll be quite busy. Oh, and Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. Not a KickStarter, but I love me some Baldur's Gate, and I'm waiting for Overhaul's inevitable KickStarter.

I don't think you understand the concept of kickstarter, we aren't waiting to judge the game because we already know what the game is and who Obsidian are and what they aim to deliver.  We are funding the game. Not EA.  Not Square-Enix.  Not Activision or Atari. Us.  The players.  The fans.

You're the one that accused me of falling for marketting, like I haven't been playing games from Josh Sawyer and Chris Avellone for the last decade and a half.

I know it's hard to understand but maybe just maybe since Obsidian has always done a fantastic job with the writing, characters and usually C&C we are pledging because we know they will do a great job. Obsidian has been an independent studio for a long time and seeing Obsidian create a kickstarter will allow them to have true creative freedom. Sure it might not be enough for you but some of us have devoured their games from their Black Isle days and followed them since then. We have enough faith in Obsidian to throw our money at them. Avellone understands how to create an RPG and with Tim Cain, Josh Sawyer and more onboard I just don't see them screwing this up. It's like someone said before Obsidian has nothing to prove unlike inExile who is developing Wasteland 2. We know what to expect from Obsidian.

That is really meaningless, considering how many people could have said the same for Bioware before Da ][ came out and they hated it.

I'm not saying this game will be bad. I'm saying that what they say is PR and marketing, and thus the product should be judged...on the product.

I think the difference between Obsidian and Bioware is Bioware took EA's money. EA has a history of running a studio to the ground.

Bioware did not actually "take EAs money." EA bought the company that OWNS bioware, did they not?

Edit: and Criterion shouldn't be there, since they're still alive and well, ruining the NFS franchise.

Obviously that is what I meant. The doctors became apart of EA and now are under their control while Obsidian even with all the problems they have faced with Bethesda, Lucas Arts and cancelled projects have remained independent I think that means something at least to me. They let their games do the talking for them not PR.

EDIT: *Points to Korusus*

No, Elevation Partners was a private investment firm, BioWare Pandemic was formed as a holding company. They were intentionally selling themselves off to the highest bidder.  Trust me, the good doctors got their EA money.
