What's a digital copy? Something to do with that thing called Steam?

If you were an early enough backer (too late, all filled) you could essentially "pre-order" the game by donating at $20.

Now you have to donate $35 to get a copy of the game.

To get a physical copy (box with disc in it) you need to donate $65.

If you are a console gamer, think of XBox Live or PSN (or whatever the Wii's network is called) and how you can pay for and download games to your console.  Digital copies are that - downloading the files to your computer, but you don't get any physical product (no disc, no box, no printed manual, etc.)

Saves money all around, and Steam is a great distribution network.  Some people dislike how Steam has it's "always on to play" DRM-ish design, so they are pushing for GOG (good old games, at gog.com) as another option for distribution.  I'm fairly confident Obsidian will offer it at least on GOG if not other places in addition to Steam.  (GOG, as a business model, is strongly against DRM.)

Hope that helps!

Well.. its a place you can download games right? I'm more or less 90% console gamer, and every so often I try to play a PC game if my systrem can handle it

You should really invest in a good PC.

If I had to make a shameless, completely unsupported guess though, I'd say that system requirements for the game won't be all that high. This isn't some shiny super sexy 3d experience with jaw dropping physics. It's gonna be an isometric, camera-locked 2d game with static, hand painted environments - the kind of game we used to play 10 years ago.

True. But having a good PC is never a bad thing.

Yeah, like Merin mentioned, think of Steam kind of like Xbox live- except better. Its a client/program where you can download games from and keeps your games in one central place along with offering a bunch of other neat features. The best thing about Steam are all of the frequent sales they have on games, which can make gaming on your PC a lot cheaper than consoles.

Nope, there still is the $25 tier that gets you just the digital version of the game!

Only if you pledge on Kickstarter. It will likely be more expensive once the game is actually out.

I think the only real reason to do this is to make sure contributors have the perception of getting a discount.  I doubt that the cost will be significantly more than the $25 as they've already cut out middlemen and, presuming they stay on budget and on schedule, they have already paid for the expense of making the product.

EDIT:  Though they're well within their rights to sell it at whatever price they feel it can sell at.

The person probably meant 512MB. Your laptop has 6GB of RAM... more or less twelve times what is necessary.

1GB consists of 1024MB. Now it's just some basic math. =)

Gig vs Meg. A Gig is roughly 1,024 Megs. So, if you have 6 Gigs, then you surpass the 512 Megs significantly.

$30 seems like a pretty reasonable price, given the genre and level of fidelity. More than that and I don't think most would 'risk' it over another somewhat recent game that's gone down in price and everyone's been talking about. But that's just my guess.

It's possible,  but I would guess it's probably unlikely.  There are very few Publishers that they could use to put it in stores without getting enourmous backlash.  Activision would irritate alot of people,  EA or Ubisoft would enrage alot of people.

I don't think there would be any objection to Bethesda. I doubt Bethesda would be interested in distributing in something like this though(unless the KickStarter campaign really starts flying).

Bethesda would be exponentially worse.  Not only did Bethesda just withold Obsidian's bonus because they missed a 85 on metacritic by one point (Regardless of how many units New Vegas sold),  but they're also the reason why NV had so many bugs.

IMO Bethesda is the worst company in the Industry.  I'd rather see EA working with Obsidian.  The stories about Bethesda I could tell you....

You can download Steam for free: http://store.steampowered.com/about/

The 6GB of RAM you have is (likely) your computer's memory, which is way more than the 512MB of RAM Steam requires. If your computer is even somewhat recent (and it probably is if it has 6GB of RAM) then you can easily run Steam.

Your firewall may block it.  Steam support has instructions on how to add Steam to your safe list.

That's true, I didn't think of that. I doubt that many other publishers would have acted differently though, honestly. All those publishers are obsessed with metacritic. And keep in mind that Bethesda let Obsidian do another Fallout game in the first place, which is pretty risky when you consider the kind of RPGs that Obsidian makes versus Bethesda's, and the receptions from the reviewers that they typically get. Also, we're only talking about a bonus.

but they're also the reason why NV had so many bugs.

One of the reasons for sure. The other being Obsidian's inexperience with the engine. That part is neither company's fault.

All of a bit of a moot point anyways. I don't want Bethesda to distribute the game, I was only speaking IF they were to distribute boxed copies of the game.

By the way, regarding the Dwarf pic they released:

Image IPB

^This SO projects the Icewind Dale vibe.  In fact, the artstyle is  So Similar, that it made me boot the game up after a 5 year hiatus and start a new Playthru.  I'm in Kresselack's tomb in the Vale of Shadows,  And man, I had forgotten just how well the old Infinity engine games do atmosphere and mood!

It does. It isn't 3D but it still looks very charming to this day. Oh and I remember that tomb! Anyway, Kuldahar in particular is incredibly atmospheric.

And you're right, that style of that is perfectly in line with the IWD character portraits. There's even snow on the ground :)

I was so annoyed when I heard about that. As far as I'm concerned, the people behind New Vegas deserve a big fat bonus for a job well done, and instead they get this? How sad is it to have a bonus system based on Metacritic score anyway? Metacritic doesn't tell any kind of universal truth, it is often subject to trends like "duuh, let's all give this game 0", and New Vegas also isn't quite mainstream enough to really interest everyone.

It sends completely the wrong message that you can't get a bonus when you make such an awesome game.

WTF is up with that anyway? Since when are bonusses handed out for anything other than SALES? Was that like, some backroom wager that the Bethesda and Obsidian  suits agreed  upon   while ****** drunk at some christmas party?

Avellone hinted that they were told something to the effect of "be glad you're getting even this."  I think there was arm twisting and they got shafted.  Not cool.

Pledged.

And a lot more than for any other stuff I can think off.

Avellone and Co. could easily make this on par with BG given that they will have full artistic freedom.
