Chris Avellone said making games for consoles restricts what they are capable of doing with the game more than people realize...

they may change their minds though. You never know...still more than a year away

Best gaming news I've heard all year!

Too bad I'm broke. I really hope I can come up with $25 before it ends.

....

I'm dead, right?

Wasteland 2, Shadow Returns, and now this?

....

There's gotta be another shoe that drops, right?  2012 and end of the world and all that, right?

....

I wish I had more money to give.

Buck: What platforms are you targeting for Project Eternity and when do you anticipate releasing it? When the game is finished, what are your plans for distributing it and supporting it over the long-term?

Feargus: First and foremost it is going to made on and for the PC (Windows). Our hope is to add Mac and Linux versions as we get farther along with the technology and based upon the success of the Kickstarter campaign.

My reasons to contribute to what these devs are doing:

- Arriving with Imoen at the Friendly Arm Inn, with the feeling of being lost in a huge and dangerous world

- The moment when the Exile starts reading the thoughts of his companions on the Ebon Hawk

- Fall-from-Grace

- Slaying a wyvern with Coran

- "Don't trust the skull"

- The change of the voice of the narrator at the end when he talks about Belhifet

- Dak'kon making the pronouncement of the "Two Deaths as One"

- Slamming Leland's face against the table

- Realizing you can kill Drizzt and loot his stuff

- "What can change the nature of a man?"

- "I called it operation YEAAAAAAAAAH!"

- The public sensorium

- Tracking that serial killer in Athkatla

- "No, you do NOT see. Pray you never will."

- Sarevok throwing that guy from the roof in the prologue

- "Don't open it"

- My sig quote

More info would have been nice since they're asking for money. As it is, seems like another standard fantasy game, and we have enough of those. I say that with only an hour of Alpha Protocol beneath my belt though, so I can't really comment on Obsidian's writing or game mechanics.

...

Friend, we have excessively different experiences in what makes great RPGs.

You've missed close to all my favorites.

If they say consoles inhibit their design choices, I believe it. Old school CRPG's have adaptable and complex interfaces that make full use of a keyboard. A game pad wouldn't cut it. Consoles already hog too much of the industry as it is.

Wish I had more money available, but oh well... it will have to do.

I'm guessing at least 3 million. Wasteland 2 took 12 hours to reach the same amount of money that this has in 4 hours.

I'm going to come in a bit more pessimistic and guess just over two million.

And hedge that by saying I won't be surprised unless it cracks four million.

OK, I read some of the articles about it. To be honest, I don't have any experience with the 'legendary' western isometric RPGs, the BG and IWD and PS:T, for context of what they're harkening back to. The only thing that really piques my interest is Mask of the Betrayer-like companions, and a 'robust' RPG system in terms of skills and abilities. Superficially not a fan of the naming conventions I'm seeing with the ruins of eyr'wynd'gwendl'fleyth and crap.

I think I just about died from happiness watching that video. When Chris Avellone was asking for feedback on what sort of original titles they pursue this is close to exactly what I asked for.

Giving money to this felt very cathartic for me, and I'm sure for some others as well. I've been begging like something like this for a decade now. I had never completely given up hope that BioWare would surprise me and take the plunge, I felt like they had a good thing going with Dragon Age. But now I see where my bread is buttered and it's with the guys that brought me Mask of the Betrayer and New Vegas. The game can be full of bugs for all I care, as long as its made with heart and soul I'll be happy.

(P.S. Long Live Black Isle/Troika/Obsidian)

I like this bit from Kotaku: "If the Kickstarter succeeds, this will be a franchise. "It means we FINALLY have a world of our own that we can build upon, not just for this title but for future releases down the line. We've wanted to do our own RPG world for a long, long time, and it's been hard to pursue outside of existing franchises. Project: Eternity is our chance to take all the RPG knowledge, mechanics, lore, and characterization we've learned over the years and turn it into the game our fans have been hungering for."

I'm so excited about this! A moment I read about it, still at work, I backed it. Planescape was a pure gem; I look forward to see its spiritual successor. I just hope that Obsidian won't block my inner compulsive backer and encourage me to pledge more by adding DRM-free version :).

Double Fine, W2, Pinkerton Road, BS5 (foreshadowing BtSS2)... So many promising games have been kickstarted this year. It makes me really happy to see that developers have a chance to create a game according to their vision. Aside from Mass Effect 2 & 3, I haven't been so incredibly keen on playing upcoming games for years.

500k, yay!

Seriously, as much as I am looking forward to Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns et al., this has the makings of potentially being all I ever dreamed of in an RPG.

I can barely contain my excitement. 65+15 pledged. Am looking at ways to be able to wiggle 140+20 out of my wallet.

I haven't been this hopeful for a game in years! And the fact that it's already got over $500,000 pledged, with 32 days to go, is a very good sign.

My favourite bit is from the Gamebanshee article, where Feargus says there will b a 'huge focus on support abilities, not just combat ones'. Sooo, diplomacy, intimidation, bluffing, perform, knowledge/lore, alchemy, crafting, spellcraft, healing, and maybe more? Oooh, yes please.

I find it funny that this has a higher funding goal than OUYA, which is supposed to be a game console.

Of course, Project Eternity won't get as much money as OUYA. But it's hard to imagine a game console requiring less funds than an RPG with a mid-sized team.
