Is it just me, or doe they look like Qunari (aside for the fact they have wings)?

No I'm not going to fault Bioware from taking inspiration from elsewhere.
I think it's cool and I encourage it.

Yeah, even the women look the same! Completely human but with horns...

I'm sure grey-skinned war-mongering horned creatures are common in fantasy. I wouldn't put too much thought into it. Although there are no humanoid winged species that would be nice...I mean like feather wings not dragon. Who doesn't want pretty?

It's a shame that people rarely talk about borrowing other people's ideas like it's a good thing.

Look at the Original Star Wars trilogy.

Aerial humanoids would be nice

Though if they get into DA, and their King is voiced by Brian Blessed, I'm sold :o

Can't say no to Brian Blessed.

I so want him to be a squadmate in Mass Effect 4
and a Party Member for Dragon Age 3.

"We changed elves because they were typical fantasy elves from Tolkien and looked like short humans with pointy ears."

Meanwhile the Qunari are ripped from Ultima, dwarves look like Tolkien dwarves (and even their culture is similar) (they live underground, they are fading, they love drinking and fighting, they are brave and good fighters and they have a sense of honor) and the current elf design is *still* inspired by Tolkien as is their culture.

cept the Elves in Tolkien's universe are tall, graceful, beautiful and wise. When I think elf i don't think short, anorexic deer alien people. :P

STILL. I'm content with DA universe.

My god. When you describe elves like that, it all makes perfect sense! Bioware changed the elves so that they became a complete rip-off from George.R.R.Martin's Children of the forest!

They also look like D&D tieflings and WoW draenei.  I don't think it's taken from any one place so much as it's a common look in fantasy.

Are you sure about it being a rip-off?
It could have been an example of taking inspiration from elsewhere which is not quite the same as rip-off.
Rip-off implies poor copy of someone elses idea with no depth, or blantant plagerism.

Rip-off sounds like an allegation to me.

We can all agree that Dragon Age is not the most original of game settings. However, it combines disparate elements quite well in most cases. I do note that it contains quite a bit of subtle parody, which has been mentioned before. The elves have "reindeer" and flying sleighs, the dwarves sell pixie dust (lyrium dust) to knights, the kossith are horned remnants of demon graphics almost intentionally (with no one noticing).

However it's not really a copy by itself. I've said before that Hart's Hope and Tales of the Flat Earth bear a thematic resemblance to what occurs in Thedas, but really Thedas is its own wee beastie. I'm giving it til Dragon Age 5 at the very least to ease into a more graceful form of storytelling and innovation.

Who thought the DA 2 qunari ever looked original? That's one thing that annoyed me about their makeover from Origins, now they are physically generic. I prefered the subtle differences of the previous game. It's also just bad art direction to have inconsistancy of an entire race's aesthetics between titles.

I'm tired of fictional media that just gives the Star Trek treatment to a race to give if variety.

Production guy #1: "Hey we we got this new race that we need to make seem odd or different and leave an immediate impression on the viewer that they aren't human...what can we do?"

Production guy #2: "Aw hell, just make them look human but put some horns, wings or a tail on them or make their nose wierd, it's what we always do."
