There is a side-quest given by Dr Chakwas to talk to a Turian about medical supplies. If you convince him she awards you a 'Medigel Efficiency' increase. Does anyone know how it works exactly?
It seems like sometimes I will hit medigel and it doesn't use one. I assume it is from this, but I am curious what the rules are. I don't imagine it is based on how much health you have, as I have had it revive a squad member and refill my health but not use one. Is it simply one free-bie per mission? Is it some chance based thing where you have like a "dice roll" and if it comes up whatever it doesn't consume one?

I was messing around with this via quick save and loads. I am fairly confident this is simply a chance based thing. The actual odds I don't know because I didn't do enough tries.

I have wondered the same thing, but I never could figure it out. I played thru with Dr Michel the next 3 or 4 times because I could actually see what her upgrade did. However, even on insanity, there is never a reason to have 16 medi-gels.

I think it has an X amount of chance to not use medi-gel. I would assume it's 40-50% since it does happen quite often and amount of health restored doesn't seem to have a bearing on it.
Like you said, I've had it use a medi-gel when I was only down one square and had it not use one when I only had one square left.
Some kind of clear word on how this works exactly from a dev would be nice, though. I don't think you even get an in-game description of what's going on. You just get the "Medi-Gel Efficiency" pop-up for a second.

Maybe I can test this on the next mission. Ontarom is coming up, so if I just take some damage then wait till the "wave" is over, I can do a little trial.ZombieGambit wrote...

Yey for time wasting.
I was on Comm Hub and fortuitously I lost a bar of health in the last segment, so I threw down a quick save before hitting the button.
I applied medigel, saw if it charged me one, then reloaded and repeated.
Did 100 applications. Of those 46 were "free." 54 used medigel.
Unfortunately this doesn't really tell us exactly what the odds are. Or if you have some statistical model, or know how they write the functions in games maybe you could figure it out, I don't know.
I imagine that Zombie's hypothesis that it is in the 40-50% range is about right.
