It's either very humbling that BW took inspiration from this game and applied it to their own IP's narrative. Or, it's very shameful that it's basically a revamp of said game's narrative in full force.

You guys decide.

Well **** Robert.

I'd pass this off as a coincidence but the Synthesis ending looks like the ending to Transformers Beast Wars so at this point I'm not ruling anything out.

Did I mention that Star Control also has a alien/sniper sidekick that follows you around on your ship?

Yep...

I bet it has a Miranda Lawson variant too.

Oh and a Jacob. Every story has a Jacob.

Come to think about it...

Mass Effect is just an amalgamation of every single successful sci-fi gaming franchise...

Halo, Star Control, Marathon, Deus Ex...Probably more.

Absolutely! That's what I'm getting at here, it's more inspiration from Star Control.

The Deus Ex thing though is just a shameless copy pasta.

Jack is likely a reference to the character in Pitch Black.

Yeah, I can see that for sure.

Mass Effect still needed Liam Neeson and Nolan North as VAs

This is really flirting with the line between copy+pasta of plot points and simple reuse of sci-fi tropes/"nothing new under the sun".

Beast Machines. Beast Wars came first and was awesome. Once they got back to Cybertron and got a new title, everything started circling the drain.

ANyone notice the bit about helping a dying warrior race recover their females? I love the originality in Casey's art. This has got to be the first time someone has blatantly ripped off so many sources at once.

Complete with shaved head. And bad attitude and self-destructive bent (although Jack was Kira at that point).

Riddick wouldn't have needed the Crucible to stop the Reapers.

There is a distinct difference between inspiration and imitation. I'd source that as a major inspiration. Playing anachronox reminded me greatly of Mass Effect and likely was part of their inspiration as well. But yes, narratively speaking, that's quite close. I could make a similar argument with Starcraft and Halo. :P

I liked Mass Effect for many reasons, but not necessarily for originality. It was more due to the delightful combat system, interesting characters, and slick environments and exploration.

The concepts in M.E. are hardly new, as are any other story. It's just a new way of telling it. The same is true for other games, movies and music.

Oh, for sure. I'm in no way saying this is a rip off. More or less heavy influence if anything.

I major in science fiction literature at UCSD, so this kind of thing happends all the time. It's humbling, if you think about it.

The ending however was a blatant Deus Ex copy pasta, and no one can dispute that.

Have you read the Star control 3 wiki entry? I find the section under Reception rather funny.

Again, 100% agree!

Did you know Blade Runner was based off a Phillip K. Dick book?
