Have you read the Star control 3 wiki entry? I find the section under Reception rather funny.
I just did. So should everyone else (link). It's rather striking.

Anyway, I think ME is original enough on it's own merit...Just found it funny that I game I played many years ago inspired it.

Riddick wouldn't have needed the Crucible to stop the Reapers.
Not trying to troll or derail the thread. I've just been thinking that exact thing since the day I first heard about the Crucible.
OP makes a perfectly valid point and I agree with him. If ME3 was a final class project, the majority of university teachers would notice the obvious plagarism and either fail them, or expect them to try again.

It just boils down to creativity, which the ME writing team had none to speak of when they penned ME3.Old Silverbolt wrote...

They did such wonderful jobs with ME1/ME2, but I think they just lost their will after EA took them over. It's obvious they were just grasping for stories that were already there, just to finish ME3 as quickly as possible.

"Creativity is just hiding your influences." Or some such.
But a good author uses his inspirations to tell something truly unique!

And the way they led up to it didn't make sense either. It's like ... oh look, I shouldn't have spent all that time playing other peoples games and stuff, and I really didn't want to write the ending, oh god I didn't, please is there any way, I just can't get this out of my head. Monitor colors. Red Green and Blue and a child. And explosions. There that does it. Done. That'll keep them guessing. Prozac, Mac. Prozac.
Mass Effect 3 is not canon.

I bet it has a Miranda Lawson variant too.
Oh and a Jacob. Every story has a Jacob.
Mass Effect is just an amalgamation of every single successful sci-fi gaming franchise...
Halo, Star Control, Marathon, Deus Ex...Probably more.

OMG this is funny. I didn't find the story particularly original to begin with. None of them really are. It's just a matter of how the story is told. But to blatantly rip of the Deus Ex HR ending and just assign colors to it?

ME's main plot was always very derivative and, dare I say, boring. I loved the series for the characters and worldbuilding, the sense of scale. All of which are forgotten in ME3, making it incredibly dull.

They've done the latter.
I'm more than a little disappointed here.
