There is a distinct difference between inspiration and imitation. I'd source that as a major inspiration. Playing anachronox reminded me greatly of Mass Effect and likely was part of their inspiration as well. But yes, narratively speaking, that's quite close. I could make a similar argument with Starcraft and Halo. :P

I liked Mass Effect for many reasons, but not necessarily for originality. It was more due to the delightful combat system, interesting characters, and slick environments and exploration.

Funny, halo was originally going to be an RTS.

The Doctors would disagree.

If you have an MD and don't practice medicine, you're not really a doctor anymore. My dad knows a dentist who got a commission in the Navy flying jets. He dropped the "Dr" in favor of being a fightrer pilot. The only reason Ray Muzyka calls himself a doctor is to stroke his own ego.

Yeah, calling yourself a fighter pilot is so modest compared to calling yourself a doctor.

This isn't serious sarcasm, right?

It's plagiarism.

No it's not. If it was Bioware would have been sued long ago.

No no, it's academic plagiarism. If that's what we're saying.

Also, the "DRs" didn't ****ing write this game. That honor would go to Mac and Hudson, who havn't got an MA between them.

My point was that he ceased using the title when he ceased using his degree. Ray has not. If you have a Ph.D. in neurolinguistics, you can call yourself "doctor" while researchign or lecturing on the topic. When you retire and open up a greasy spoon, you lose all right to that title. The pilot was just the first case that sprang to mind, as it's an actual one I know of.  But regardless of the scenario, a doctor is as much a job as it is a degree. In some cases, even more so. Corpsmen regularly get called "doc" by injured Marines. But if you cease to treat people for injuries, you're probably going to be called Petty Officer or Chief. And no degree is required.

Them not being sued dosn't prove they didn't copy others. If someone commits theft but don't get arrested or judged, he still did it.

There's like 7 different plots that can happen in life.

The sooner you learn that there's no way for something to be completely original the better.

That is true, to an extent.

However, I will point you to "The Expanse" as just one example of something truly original. It's out there, it's just mostly in book form and you have to find it.

Wait a minute I just read all that slowly:

So your epic quest to free all races and destroy the ancient evil begins. From this point you have to travel across the galaxy meet other civilizations gain their trust and form a new alliance, meanwhile the ur quans are too busy fighting each other.

Is this a joke? Like, does the person that wrote this honestly believe Mass Effect created this story? Has this person ever seen any media ever?

I was expecting this to be incredibly similar to Mass Effect, whereas it was just a generic story that could quite litterally be replaced with Halo or LotR.

I don't believe someone honestly thinks Mass Effect ripped off this generic story, this is the most obvious troll thread I have ever seen in my life.

I did decide.

Blatant troll thread, the most generic story ever trying to be compared to ME, it couldn't be more trolly if it tried.

Okay who has a ton of money? We'll rip off.... well a bunch of different stories. The sci-fi roleplaying action adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously. The male lead will look like Eric on True Blood (I just like the actor) and be voiced by him, just because have you ever noticed that the male lead is NEVER blond, that's why. Female lead? look like Kate Beckensale with black hair and blue eyes. No they're not vampires.

The OP didn't create a "blatant troll thread". He simply showed the last scene of Beast Machines, which created a fusion of organic and synthetic by the hero jumping to his death in a green chasm. Read that again. The mechanism of bringing about synthesis was so similar to ME3 that it is uncanny. We aren't talking about "the most generic game ever", we are talking about a very specific scene from a cartoon that seems to be recreated nearly exactly in a video game. There is no trolling in that.
