And every first person shooter is a rip off of Doom.

There, I said it.

OP, Mass Effect borrows WAAAY more from Stargate than any other scifi series. Just wanted to get that out there.

I mean the Stargates = Mass Relays, Ancients/Ori = Leviathan/Reapers to a degree, Dakara Superweapon = Crucible, etc.

funny how bioware hasn't commented on this. I already knew the writers were talentless morons, but this just confirms it even more.

My point was that he ceased using the title when he ceased using his degree. Ray has not. If you have a Ph.D. in neurolinguistics, you can call yourself "doctor" while researchign or lecturing on the topic. When you retire and open up a greasy spoon, you lose all right to that title. The pilot was just the first case that sprang to mind, as it's an actual one I know of.  But regardless of the scenario, a doctor is as much a job as it is a degree. .

Who said that's the rule? The couple of retired doctors I've met were called "doctor" to the end of their days.

I actually believe it borrowed most of it's inspiration from BSG:TOS. The Geth and Quarian conflict obviously mimic the nomad humans and attacking Cylons in many ways. But I do, agree with you on the StarGate part as well!

The company doesn't need to exist for a person/s to hold rights.

no but they still need to be able to hire lawyers and a Defunct company can't

The rights holder could. Someone owns the rights to the IP still.

I don't even know what I quoted. Strange.

I don't think anyone would care where the inspiration came from if they liked the ending for Mass Effect. But considering how strongly people hate it, people tend to want to find additional ways to point out why the ending is flawed.

I just wish something could have been done. But alas, the same with sprinkles is all that Bioware really felt they could feasibly do, and sadly, Mass Effect didn't fare too well for it, for some of us.

Did those doctors leave medecine behind to persue another profession, or did they become too old to continue practicing? There is a huge difference between those two possibilities, and one of them must apply. And you'll notice that in my post, I said the hypothetical doctor retired and opened a diner. If you insist on being called a doctor at that point, you are very pretentious and want to have an air of authority in your current profession that you haven't earned. And Ray Muzyka has not earned the authority in the gaming community to call himself a doctor. He's exploiting one degree to falsely promote himself.

Not talking about an FPS though. But if you want to go in that direction, all shooters are a rip off of Spacewar!. And yes, that is an exclamation point followed by a period. The title includes the exclamation point. 1962 top-down competitive shooter with an Aseroids-esque style. In fact, Asteroids was inspired by it.

Can't say for Starcraft....but its not QUITE an exact copypasta with Halo, though the ancient baddies (Precurser/Flood) is almost accurate.

Halo took a lot of stuff from Known Space and Ringworld, some from SC but really only the Zerg/Xel Naga.

It's... er... intertextual! Uh... an ironic pastiche? A reworking of archetypal structures using more contemporary reference points?

In any case, it's Art and you're not, so there!

Unless you're Art Garfunkel or something... Art, are you out there?

Yes... But you dont have a terminator after you in DE or super powers in the matrix. What you have is a cyberpunk future, with corporate conspiracies similar to at least Robocop or Terminator.
But just similar, not an ending where the hero sacrifices himself in molten metal in DE.

Yet there are cyborgs that share the deadliness of the Terminator that follow you in DE and you also have super powers while wearing lots of leather.  DE is set in a cyberpunk but its nothing completely new.

AresKeith wrote...

DE was the first game to use that kind of ending, and it doesn't matter whether its a different universe you don't copy another game's ending

I'm pretty sure Bionic Commando, System Shock, and Metal Gear were around before DE.  They don't have exact qualities but they are similar.  The point is nothing is 100% original even when Too Human took 2 decades to come out.

How is Deus Ex not the first Deus Ex game, when it was the first Deus Ex game to be released?

Also, you're aware that Wikipedia-

A). cites their sources, and-

B). is operated by people whose job it is to maintain the integrity of the site

Really, Wikipedia isn't a cesspool of misinformation like many people seem to imply.

DE is pretty much a combination of Blade Runner, Terminator, Robocop, and the Matrix put together while all of those series had video games other then Blade Runner. To be fair this isn't about which video game did it 1st when these concepts were already done in novels.

Like you said cyborgs, half human half machine, not totally machine like terminator. (inspiration)
They didnt came from the future to kill the hero. The hero didnt jump in molten metal to save the day. (that would be plagiarism)

If you want to get technical then some of the Terminators can be classified as cyborgs and thats still nothing new.

I was talking about the ending before that comment. I said theres no justification for how much the ME3 Vanilla ending and DX ending related. Matrix, Robocop, Bladerunner, and Terminator did not end like DX or ME3. That's a totally different arguement.

Some of the Fallout and Elder Scroll have taken ques from other games just like what DE has done.

Baa Baa wrote...

When something has this much of a resemblance to another game: entire plot, antagonists, locations, and characters, it's reasonable to think it's not a coincidence. Just because everything isn't entirely original anymore, does not mean that things like this should just go unnoticed or excused.

Saying this is laziness esepcially when anyone can nippick about similarities in different things like how Alien could be compared to Starship Troopers and vice versa while I do know that the Starship Troopers book did come out 1st, but that is besides the point.

No you cant since the skin is there just for camouflage, he just feels the impact of bullets and not pain like a cyborg would. Take the skin from terminator and he would be "meh", rip the skin from a cyborg and he will feel pain since its a living organism.

Then again, Blizzard are one o those studos that inspires themselves  a lot on other stuff. The zergs were heavily inspired from the tyranids (themselves inspired from aliens)
Though that an still cont as just inspiration.

However, warcraft is a lot closer to pplagiarism with warhammer fantasy
