Voiced protagonist again in DA3?

I really, really don't want to be a voiced protagonist. Not because I disliked the idea, but because it seems more like I'm playing some random dude, rather than playing my own character/myself.

I heard the dialogue wheel was coming back so I think it will be a voiced character

I hope atleast I'll have more options on how I want to play my character.
Instead of being limited to friendly, "witty", and angry.

I would like to play as another race. Another Dalish Elf like my Warden mainly. Voiced Character probably means Human protaginistImperatorMortis wrote...

Yeah, you're right. I was planning on playing human anyway, but that is pretty annoying that we're stuck as a human again. I don't see the point in limiting us like that.

I'm sure this isn't confirmed yet, but I can't help but wonder if we'll have that again, and if this is going to be a trend in future Dragon Age/Bioware games.
Actually this has been very much confirmed first by Mark Darrah in the thread after the DA2 expansion was canceled, and repeated vociferously by David Gaider. Try to think of anything in Dragon Age 2 that made the game feel like Dragon Effect and you can safely bet that it will be in Dragon Age 3 and every BioWare product from here on out...dialogue wheel, fully voiced PC, summarized dialogue choices...

Well thats just awful. But who knows, maybe they'll improve on it, and make it so that I'm not shoehorned in a specific role?

I'm hopeful that DA3 will turn out to be the best DA game yet with the diverseness of DA:O but with some the DA2 qualities. I hope I'm right but if not...idkImperatorMortis wrote...

hope they add banter of players that offer a conversation chance a mix of origins mixed with da2. I hate hearing my hawke talked about in 3rd person while exploring and not able to give a responce.
That would be great. If they say something you can choose to respond(talk option), or ignore it(keep walking).

Two completely irreconcilable positions. You're very lucky, you have nothing to fear. BioWare will never drop the voiced protagonist, no matter how it affects the quality of future Dragon Age titles. They'll just assume they didn't "do enough to promote player agency" or something. That's the ticket.

I'd like to point out that the voiced PC actually hurts player agency. So there is no way you can have both a voiced PC and a PC that the player fully controls, just like you can't have both tactical and action combat using the same system.
That being said, I'm pretty sure that Bioware will never give up that damn wheel even considering that 1)voiced PCs take away player control of a PC and 2) as far as voiced PC dialogue options go, the dialogue wheel has to be one of the worst I have ever seen. Oh well, Project Eternity is a go!

I've actually liked the VA'a for Bioware female protagonists so it does not bother me.
Its not an issue of voice acting quality. Atleast for me it isnt, I didn't mind Hawkes voice.
Its an issue of player involvement, and interaction. Because DA:O didn't have a voiced protagonist there were lots of fleshed out, and satisfying conversational options. Also there's the issue that people may hate the voice actor in question, believing that he or she doesn't properly represent their PC.
With a "silent" protagonist that isn't an issue. Anyone with an imaginiation can "hear" their characters voice in their head as they read the dialo, and it makes it more likely for you to say what you mean. Like if you're rejecting someone you don't have to worry about "your" character being to nice or too harsh about it.
You have more options, with the exception of sarcasm. Sometimes its kind of hard to tell if your character is supposed to be sarcastic or not. Unless you actually see a [Sarcastic] tag next to the dialogue.
We're supposed to be playing our own characters in these games right?
Voiced protagonists just don't really fit with that imo.

In my opinion, this is part of the balancing between console and PC. Sitting on the couch with a console with a voiced protagonist creates a cinematic experience, and is in many ways expected. The dialogue wheel, reduction in text to read (hey, remember in DAO when the devs were excited about the amount of in game text they had written? Now, reading is bad apparently) are all conceits for the console.
So in short, for DA there is a voiced protagonist. Now, in the past this has limited player choice and agency in the creation process (could we have had an elf from the Alienage with Hawke's voice?). We can hope that with DA3 we might have multiple voices to choose from, or if there is racial selection for the PC each choice has its own VA.
EDIT - For an alternative approach, those interested might want to check out Project Eternity over at Obsidian.

I mean, things need to keep improving and changing, right? Voiced characters = more realistic.
I bet people complained back in the days when games didn't have anyone talking and all of the sudden NPCs were talking. They probably said "dang it, now I can't imagine my favorite NPCs voice and have to listen to someone voice them over" <_<

And we wonder they these discussions get so heated. No need to be so flippant. I understand, you like the voiced protagonist and feel it adds more than it takes away. I don't. I feel that it, objectively, gives you less control over what your character says. Are there ways to make this less obvious? Yes. But until there are dozens of voices to choose from and equeal choices to text dialogue with the same accuracy, for me, it will not be as immersive. I beleive there is a difference between "realism", however you want to define, and immersion.
Luckily for you, Bioware agrees with you.

Well if you're fine with paraphrased dialogue, and being stuck playing as one race then there's no problem.
Also "more realistic" does not necessarily equal better. Especially when it comes to video games.
