What Do You Want In A Sex Scene?

For as long as I've played BioWare games there's been one topic that's never changed "The sex scenes are crap." Be it having the game fade to black for Bastila to kiss the player in the cargo hold or Mass Effect's naked soft-core Lifetime movies porn scenes everyone always complains about the sex scenes.

And from what I can gather prior to this topic... no one knows what they want. Some people point to other games (Witcher 2's sex scenes used to get a lot of point-tos but I found those scenes a little laughable and I thought it only ever worked with the pool scene and that's because it had a great sense of humor). Others have pointed to the soft lighted not-porn of Mass Effect 1 as what's a good sex scene.

But I can't really see what people are looking for here.

I assume it's not a desire to be aroused. That's my assumption and I may be wrong with a few gamers out there. So showing more skin can't be the thing we're looking for right?

I'm also going to end this by giving my two cents. Romances in BioWare games... I do them... I think because they're there. I've never stood in line with a copy of the latest BioWare game in my hands and was giddy about how I'd be able to romance NPCs. That doesn't mean I'd like to see them cut out of future games. I think they do add to the game, no one could say otherwise if they played Lair of the Shadow Broker with a Shepard that romanced Liara. That was fantastically well done and it even changed my opinion on Liara (I thought she was boring beforehand).

That said I think my favorite romances (sex scenes) so far have been Dragon Age 2's. Isabela's made me chuckle as they gell onto the bed and in their urgency Hawke got stabbed by yet another hidden dagger on Isabela. Fenris's forceful fight/romance (especially when Rivialed) was really fun. Merrill's was so sweet it can give people diabeteis just from watching it.

...I don't romance Anders. I'm incapable of doing it.

But the reason I liked them more than their other games was the humor of the scenes. And that's what I'd like to see them carry forward. Making them not so uber serious or over the top cheesy.

As for what I consider their worst... Origins had the weird sheer underwear humping to over the top music but it wasn't so bad. And I honestly enjoyed the fact that you could do it anytime you wanted in camp or kiss them when out adventuring. Like if you were in the Deep Roads and you kissed Morrigan in front of Leliana to hurt her feelings because you lead her on while romancing Morrigan. I mean that's a moment they wrote for and I laughed at because I'm an evil bastard, apparently.

But I'd say their worst was Mass Effect 2. The scenes (other than Garrus) had no real humor to them and the worst (in my opinion) was Miranda's... where she stradles Shepard while half naked in the drive core. It made me laugh because of how weird it all looked and what a weird location to choose (for those who didn't play it there are three beds in the entire ship: Shepard's bed, Miranda's bed, and Jack's tiny ratty cot).

So what do you people think. What do you want in a sex scene?

Singleplayer sex does feel like it's missing something. Although you don't have to worry about balancing issues with singleplayer focused sex like you do with multiplayer sex.

This thread's on a fine track to derailment.:o

I liked the vanilla DAO scenes sans the clothing I want tasteful but intimate. Sideboob, silhouettes hands and eyes shadows and flickering lights soft sighs tasteful and romantic.

It must have a meaning within the story, or add definition to the characters. A meaningless humping scene like DA:O is bad.

When I play a Bioware game with a romance in it, I don't want to feel like this creepy kid in the corner staring at two people going at it... >.>

I'd rather not have any romances if I'm reduced to that kid in the corner.

Oh, and in ME2 the crew have beds, on the crew floor...but I don't think anyone wanted Shepard bumpin' uglies on their beds.

I always viewed those beds as the beds for the nameless marines all over the Normandy... and Rupert the janitor/chef. I honestly never even thought the companions slept in them... likely because they all had their own individual rooms... but I can see them sleeping there for arugment's sake.

I'm fine with fade to black. I know what goes where, I don't need to be shown.

I'm actually fine with that too. I still like the Revan/Bastila romance and those characters don't even touch each other on screen for the entire game. And the Carth fangirls would back me up, probably (it's been what... ten years since I romanced Carth. I don't even remember how that worked. Perhaps a replay is in order...).

How about... no sex scene? I know, shocking. Still, in recent Bioware games it feels more like the romances has been pasted on the rest of the game as a sidequest where the ultimate goal is to get the NPC to bed. Well, the main problem is probably that the romance pretty much ends directly after the sex scene.

Another thing is that I really don't think it should be decided from the start that all the romancable characters will have a sex scene. It should depend on their personality and the timeline of the main story (have the characters know eachother for a week or several years).

For example, I have no problem with Isabellas sexscene in DA2. If anything I'm surprised there weren't several, considering her personality and the game taking place throghout 7-10 years.

On the other hand, I was really surprised that Tali had a sexscene in ME2 at all, considering all the talk of quarians never being able to take of their suits. Wasn't there even some dialogue in a citadel about the whole situation to? the whole "no, don't do that! Don't let some human spoil you". It would have been interesting to see how they made a romance with Tali where you simply never had any hope of ever hitting the sack with her, and knew of it beforehand.

I personally prefer the type of scene from the first Mass Effect. It was a little racy while still being tasteful (in my opinion).

Honestly though, I liked pretty much all the "sex scenes" that have been presented in Mass Effect or Dragon Age thus far. I didn't love the DA:O underpants, and I was a little disappointed with my relationship with Garrus culminating in a  headbump, but even those were minor annoyances.

I suppose it probably doesn't help to say, "I like things just the way they are," but I guess the truth is I do. ^_^

You know you can just not get with anyone or skip the scene if you're so against sex scenes.

Something similar to the Liara scene in ME1 and ME3. None of that cut to black or characters dry humping each other in their underwear stuff we've seen in the past DA games.

DAO was good i want more nudity. If they are worried about children sell the game age restricted. i have to agree with those that say skip seen if you dont want to watch. We did not get people like Felicia Day wanting to make a charter that was just a fighter she wanted sex appeal just like the majority. Dao gave us multi love story while blood n guts fighting. DA2 not so much and it lost a base of players wanting a full story. Hawke story was lacking maybe da3 will fix that.

I'm fine with fade to black too. Its the interaction in the scenes before & after the sex that matters in a game. We all know what happens, go watch porn if you really want more..

Intimacy, which means focus on the eyes, not the crotches/chests. Make them be there for themselves, not as an exhibitionist display for the gamer's bonerific pleasure.

ME1 Ashley is my favorite, especially the dialogue afterwards, the complicity conveyed.
