I know its only a minor niggle but to travel over old ground just to open a few chests can get a bit tedious, not that theres really any good loot but its all gold huh.

perhaps you guys dont know this, but on dragonagenexus.com there is a mod which allows you to smash chests and locked doors open.
I might get this. Leliana is rank 2 in lockpicking and has 28 cunning, and hasen't been able to open a single locked chest in random encounters or in Redcliffe. I was scratching my head in frustration. The group I am running with right now is 3 2h warriors and Morrigan (with haste and heals) so it could be useful.
Yes there is nothing useful in locked chests. But it is vendor trash money and the exp really adds up. I think having it rogues only was a bit silly (since they were trying to get away from the DnD similarities), but the fact it is a talent and not a skill is really weird.

I thought somebody would say something like "I have a giant axe, why not use that?" Well, if you use your giant axe to smash treasure chests and locks, you are going to have the problem of your blade being dull and possibly broken by the time you need it on a monster.
As most soldiers will tell you, we hate putting rounds through our rifle without cause (firing blanks pisses me off), because then you have to clean them. I'd imagine the same holds true for swords. While I don't have an s-word myself, I certainly wouldn't smash chests with them, as I might need my sword to protect me from other swords and kill my enemies.
Rant has gone on long enough.

Also bashing or knocking chests should not grant XP.

I have better stuff to spend my skill points other than PP, on my non-rogue chars and sometimes even on my rogue chars!
I'm ok with lockpicking for rogues only too. Just respec Leliana and make her a more specialized character than the poor one she is by default. She might even become a fixed party member up to the end of the game. (She did for me when I had her as a true Orlesian Bard Assassin Master Archer!)

My party can summon fire, ice and lightning, rip the earth and throw it, heal, even create poisons, but when there's a chest we have to call Leiliana.

I hate that I HAVE to equip a rogue character for this purpose - its such a waste of a character slot, and limits the gameplay experience.

Lol.. I banned mages from my party and Leliana is cool! =)

It's not like you find anything worth while in them.
Yes but you get XPs for opening locks and it is usually more than what you get for killing low level monsters. There are so many locks that it is well worth while to bring a rogue along for no reason other than to get those XPs. Personally I think you should be able to magically open locks or smash them, so a rogue is not a required character in the party.

Well, in that case the chests might as well never be locked instead. If all classes can open them there's no point in having locked chests in the game to begin with.

However I disagree with the bashing thing. Chests should be for rogues only. Otherwice we can just as well remove the lockpicking skill altogether as everyone would just bash the chests and save the skillpoints on something else.
