Why is there only one skill to open locked chests. I personally dont like using rogue skills and would like to either have lockpicks or be able to smash chests open if strength is high enough.
I know its only a minor niggle but to travel over old ground just to open a few chests can get a bit tedious, not that theres really any good loot but its all gold huh.

I STRONGLY agree with your sentiments. The one skill for opening chests is not adequate.

It's not like you find anything worth while in them.

May not be a lot in the chests but in order to buy some of the more fancy stuff at traders you need to sell as much rubbish as possible

I might get this. Leliana is rank 2 in lockpicking and has 28 cunning, and hasen't been able to open a single locked chest in random encounters or in Redcliffe. I was scratching my head in frustration. The group I am running with right now is 3 2h warriors and Morrigan (with haste and heals) so it could be useful.

Yes there is nothing useful in locked chests. But it is vendor trash money and the exp really adds up. I think having it rogues only was a bit silly (since they were trying to get away from the DnD similarities), but the fact it is a talent and not a skill is really weird.

Ohhh, but these mods and things, just feel wrong, i want them in the game, at the end of the day you could mod everyone and everything to be no fun. Id just have had liked the game to have though this far, maybe once i finish it i wont care. But then, i wont play it over again so...

What sort of bugged me is that you can have pickpocketing skill on pretty much anyone. To me it would be sort of the same thing. Pickpocketing and picking locks requires the same sort of skill...slight of hand. Hopefully they might consider this in the future.

If you want into locked chests bring a rogue, or alter the game.

I thought somebody would say something like "I have a giant axe, why not use that?" Well, if you use your giant axe to smash treasure chests and locks, you are going to have the problem of your blade being dull and possibly broken by the time you need it on a monster.

As most soldiers will tell you, we hate putting rounds through our rifle without cause (firing blanks pisses me off), because then you have to clean them. I'd imagine the same holds true for swords. While I don't have an s-word myself, I certainly wouldn't smash chests with them, as I might need my sword to protect me from other swords and kill my enemies.

Rant has gone on long enough.

Lol, not at all Nick. I love the post lol. Very very true. But again, these are magical swords... who knows if they even get blunt ? We dont see durability on them...

That's what the Maul in the 2nd weapon set is for!

Also bashing or knocking chests should not grant XP.

I think the only reason Pick Pocketing is a skill and not a Rogue's Talent is because otherwise rogues would be clearly in disadvantage as far as character development is concerned. I don't see many char classes taking PP skill though. It works much better with a Rogue with stealth, looking from a class-related perspective.

I have better stuff to spend my skill points other than PP, on my non-rogue chars and sometimes even on my rogue chars!

I'm ok with lockpicking for rogues only too. Just respec Leliana and make her a more specialized character than the poor one she is by default. She might even become a fixed party member up to the end of the game. (She did for me when I had her as a true Orlesian Bard Assassin Master Archer!)

I just keep thinking when you first get to Redcliffe and you could smash open Dwyn's home. I mean, just thinking back to long ago, KOTOR allowed you to bash open crates

I hate that I HAVE to equip a rogue character for this purpose - its such a waste of a character slot, and limits the gameplay experience.

My party can summon fire, ice and lightning, rip the earth and throw it, heal, even create poisons, but when there's a chest we have to call Leiliana.

Yes but you get XPs for opening locks and it is usually more than what you get for killing low level monsters. There are so many locks that it is well worth while to bring a rogue along for no reason other than to get those XPs. Personally I think you should be able to magically open locks or smash them, so a rogue is not a required character in the party.

Well, in that case the chests might as well never be locked instead. If all classes can open them there's no point in having locked chests in the game to begin with.

the locked chests are just a small bonus for rogues anyway. i don't really care anymore, because there is never any special loot in them.

I agree with a1021, there's not good enough loot from chests. When chests needs all four lockpicking skills and lots of cunning as well it's just not good enough to find only a root! There should be at least 10 gold or items worth 10 gold in order to make it worthwile.

However I disagree with the bashing thing. Chests should be for rogues only. Otherwice we can just as well remove the lockpicking skill altogether as everyone would just bash the chests and save the skillpoints on something else.

As for the XP.. does it actually help you? Not really. More XP means you level up, which means the mobs will scale up as well. You'll get some more control over fights by unlocking new abilities of course, but at the same time, the mobs will unlock some new abilities as well (not that they use those high grade abilities often enough, but that's another issue)

Indeed...I find myself caring less and less about locked chests. I almost never bring a rogue in my party and don't bother with boring chest runs either. I'm not desperate to stroke my e-peen bu maxing my characters. I figure I'll get all chests and different things during all my replays of the game anyway.

There's a mod that allows you to bash chests, and mages to use their abilities as well. Don't know how well it works, but worth a try.
