I've seen people tear that article a new one a thousand times over. For the sake of ranting, Shamus Young either ignores established plot points, nitpicks to a ridiculous degree, or simply says something is bad because he didn't pay attention to it.
If I did the same thing, I could rip apart ME1's plot just as easily as well.

Kindly point me to an example of such tearing so that may reevaluate my opinion on the matter, if you could.

If you're asking about which threads existed that criticized Young, there was at least one on the BSN in the ME2 section, and another couple in the Escapist forums.
But if you're asking for direct links, I'm sorry but I can't provide them. That article came out nearly a year ago now.

To be clear, I wasn't questioning whether they existed, I'm just genuinely interested because that would make ME2 even better if I thought it made sense.

Yep, they even reduced the possible different approaches.

ME1 let you choose between killing stuff off with the Mako using his two guns or parking the Mako, taking out your sniper and clear the way from a nice spot in the hillside. It was nearly like playing two different games.

ME2 had at least the Hammerhead, but only after buying a DLC and you couldn't get out of it anymore and achieve your goal on foot.

ME3 had two short opportunities to enter an Atlas and one 30 second sequence of utilizing the machine gun attached to the shuttle. The rest is always the same routine: Land the shuttle, get out, do the mission and re-enter the shuttle.

So I agree, even only from that perspective every successor had less to offer than the previous game.

And don't get me started on the storyline...

diversity of enemies
conversation was not autodialouge
more missions
more planets to visit

ME2 was the best of the bunch. I loved the central mechanic of gathering and getting to know your sqauddies, it felt like a bank heist movie. Mass Effect 3 is second place for better combat, better customisation, awesome plot and the joy of seeing everything we've worked so hard for coming together. Mass Effect 1 is third best; it had it's teething problems, but it set the scene for awesome things to come and the core plot of tracking down Saren was extremley compelling,

Oh, and that Shamus Young article? Ignore it. For every intelligent article or piece of work that guy puts out (and there are a few, I'll admit), there are at least five pieces of poorly written try-hard nitpicky ******. Plus those Spoiler Warning Let's Plays are painful to listen to.

:alien:As a game I enjoyed Mass Effect 3 more. However I felt that Mass Effect 2 was a better story. I have not played Mass Effect yet because I own a PS3 but I hope to soon. I have had fun and enjoyed Mass Effect 2 and 3. I have finished Mass Effect 2 six times and Mass Effect 3 three times. I love the series and hope it will continue.

I didn't enjoy Mass Effect 3 as much as I did Mass Effect 2 or Mass Effect 1. Sure it has way better gameplay, but that'll only get you so far in a game that prides itself on its story and characters.

Storywise ME1>ME2. ME3 could have been better than ME2 but it started out like crap, then was pretty solid, then turned to s**t at the end, and because of the ending it isn't as good as either ME1 or ME2. The gameplay is better in ME3, but I'll still replay ME2. I will not replay ME3 because the ending blows.
