I will preface this by saying I am currently playing through Dragon Age 2 for the first time, and these are initial impressions and analasys from a fresh mind and pretty much zero character discussion involvement on these boards/anywhere - I also haven't romanced anyone yet, so I have no bias there either.

DA2 demonstrates both high quality and low quality writing with it's characters, a contrast I will now show between Merril and Isabela.

But first, I would like to say that both characters have excellent voice actors, Eve Myles and Victoria Kruger have done excellent jobs with the scripts they were given.

Now here is a list of character traits I have observed from the two characters:

Merril:
  • Naivity
  • Shy
  • Confident in battle
  • Innocently oblivious to some parts of life
  • Able to be humurous confidently in battle and almost wryly ( in a kind of innocent way) in non-combat banter.
  • Knowledgable in her field
  • Her design is both fragile, representative of her immediate personality but also dexterous and suited to her class.
  • Has her own motivations, does her own thing, despite her initial impressions.
 - As you can see, with Merril, there are lots of moments where you can say "she is this, but she is also this"

Isabela:
  • Confident (in battle and in non-combat)
  • Hedonist (likes sex and drinking)
  • Dialogue, including jokes are centered around her hedonistic character (sex and drinking).
  • Her design is focused entirely on her sexuality, revealing clothes, impractical armor, etc.
 - With Isabela, you begin to see that she has been written around one sole trait (her hedonism/obsession with pleasures)

Summary:

Where Merril has layers of personality that appear dynamically depending on the situation (she is not shy in battle, for instance). Isabela has one single layer of personality, to which everything revolves around - her sexuality/hedonism.

Merril comes accross as a dynamic character with various personality traits that are not necessarily confined to a stereotype.

Isabela seems to have the opposite treatment, where all her personality/physical traits revolve around a sole confident, hedonistic stereotype. She is given the illusion of "depth" because she is a woman, and the fact that women are rarely given "confident" roles does not actually hide the fact her layers of personality really only amount to one trait. This is where a character moves towards "charicature" - a major faux pas in writing.

If Isabela's character, say, did not dress to fit exactly her stereotype - thus allowing her quirks to arise naturally as the player got to know her, this would help to remove some of the steps she makes towards being a "charicature".

If you are going to have a sex obsessed hedonist, don't dress them so obviously to the point where all subtext is lost.

Conclusion / TL:DR :

Isabela has no subtext because her personality is already immediately apparent and it never really develops as a result. She never subverts player expectations of her stereotype since her first meeting. Don't get me wrong, I like Isabela, but I do not believe her, at least, not yet. (Still playing)

Merril, however continually manages to allow surprising personality traits to be drip fed to the player throughout the game, layering her character and giving her depth. The first time I realized Merril wasn't being naive (my initial impression of her) but was actually joking is one of those moments of true depth.

I hope this helps the writers understand how the characters in DA3 could be greatly improved.

Peace <3

EDIT: Apparently I am going to be able explore Isabela's stereotype as I play and apparently she is not stereotypical as she develops, so that is actually welcome news, I'll keep her in my party :)

Merill is still undoubtedly the best written character for me so far given how varied she is!

"Depth", whatver that means, is far less important to me than development, which is far easier to guage.

Isabela has potentially the most (and I'd say the best) development of any of the companions in her character arc, especially on the Rivalry path.

No spoilers please, these are initial impressions, please see the first sentence.

Development is also important, but that is part of depth too. If you have both, you have an excellent character.

Depth = Not A Stereotype - just so you know buddy.

There's much more to Isabela than is at first apparent. It is especially evidenced in her rivalry path and/or her romance.

Just give it a while and you'll see other aspects of her personality. Saying anything more would be spoilers.

Sometimes people are an obvious stereotype externally for a reason.

Isabela may surprise you. Just wait until you finish the game. There is much, much more to her than her hedonistic lifestyle.

Interesting, this thread may actually turn into a "how you do two great characters" instead of just one ^_^

Then why do you start this thread in first place making false assumptions? Finish the game and we can discuss on a serious base without spoilering you. Isabela is nowhere near to static or rooted in one stereotype.

How far along in the game are you? I started to see more layers in Isabela almost from the moment I picked her up. It's easy to write her off, saying that she has only one layer to her: sex crazed harlot but I think there's a lot more to her. In fact I applaud BioWare for creating such a dynamic character that break the molds. Can't really say more since you haven't finished the game yet and want to avoid spoilers.

For me that would be Isabela or Aveline.

I said in the thread title these are first impressions! Jeebus. Thanks to this thread, I decided to keep Isabela in my party, so if I had never started it I would have already written her off and wouldn't that be sad!?

You basically just **** shamed Isabela :pinched:<_<

Just because a character is confident in her sexuality and enjoys sex DOES NOT MAKE HER A BAD CHARACTER!

You obvious were not on this board when there were countless posts similar to yours where people made no effort to understand Isabela and wrote her off because of the sex thing.

If Isabella was a male pirate and acted in the same way as isabella there would be nothing said about him, he would be classed as a hero and there would be nothing wrong with him having a woman in every port.

I love Merrill. (She's like no other game character I could name.)

I'm really starting to dig Isabela, too, but mostly after the comics. There's some backstory and, in the second series so far, POV.

Loving sex and turning every single conversation into a joke about penises are two very different things.

I couldnt stand Isabella. I betrayed her. I wish she wouldve really gotten punished by the Arishok instead of escaping... or i wish i couldve killed her like I did Zevran in dragon age origins.

Woah! No I didn't - no way would I do that, no no no no no. Wrong. Incorrect. Not my intention at all.

My point was so far, her character is all tailered towards that ONE aspect of her personality, which is bad writing. But apparently this will be changing soon, according to posters here, so thats good!

I'm not trying to **** shame, I am trying to show how soley designing a character around one single element is exploitive, rather then expressive.

Dude, I have no problem with characters with open sexualities or hedonistic personalities etc. I simply think (so far) it seems exploitive not to give her character any other traits and to focus on that single trait. But I hear this chances, so I will reserve final judgement until I finish the game.

Wrong. I would have the same problems, how dare you infer my intentions are sexist.

They're virginal girl next door and crazy up against the wall "let's have it on right here". That is all.
