Merril was cute, likeable and very very crazy. She was well written.

You basically just **** shamed Isabela<_<
Just because a character is confident in her sexuality and enjoys sex DOES NOT MAKE HER A BAD CHARACTER!
Loving sex and turning every single conversation into a joke about penises are two very different things.
There's an Anders/Isabela conversation in the game... second act? Third act? I don't remember. Sometimes, most times, it's better to stay light and joke about penises than it is to talk about all the hatred spewing forth from the world.
It's a touch of a coping device with Isabela but it's also a survival mechanism. She isn't a bad person and she has beliefs but she damn certainly doesn't want people to see that. Then she's taken sides and then she can't run away if she has to.

If you have Aveline and Isabela with you, and listen to the (very hilarious in imo) banter between them on your travels, Isabela's intended character (stereotypical) traits makes more sense. That's all I can say. She is as she is for a reason, give her a chance.
I did. Then I learned she could have prevented hundreds of deaths but chose to think only of herself. As I played a DW rogue and she was redundant, didn´t make enough friendship so she also went away when I told her I´d hand the book to the Arishok so they´d leave the city. So she can go to hell as far as I´m concerned.

Merrill is not so much confident in battle as she is angry. She gets really mad at enemies.

I think you missed some subtle things with Isabela that showed she was far from being just what you offered in the 1st post st. Elmo. Her marriage, her 'they don't know me I know me' line, that fact she admits people have told her to 'get away fro me you hag!" Her relationship that evolves with Aveline. she was not as shallow and one dimensional as people think.
Merril was cute, likeable and very very crazy. She was well written.
Agree about Isabella. She really grows as a character in my eyes. Varric was head n shoulders above everyone else IMO, but Isabella was the solid number 2 to me.
That said, Merril is voiced by Eva Myles, and I would marry that woman in RL if presented the opportunity. Freaking love her in Torchwood. For Americans that missed the first 3 seasons, I highly suggest checking out BBC America. Seasons 1-3 of both Torchwood & Being Human are awesome(my almost 21 yo daughter agrees). The Fades and Bedlam had various issues, but were enjoyable as well. British TV has a way with the horror/sci fi genre.

I never saw Merrill as crazy; she's proactive. She's sarcastic, and dealing with culture shock as a Dalish elf in a human city. I wish Hawke had as much agency and intelligence as her. Merrill and Isabela have a nice friendship, and Isabela's remark to Hawke in the Hanged Man (post-Merrill romance, if you click on her) shows she cares about Merrill.

I do have to say that I liked Isabela more, perhaps especially because she was the sane one compared to Merrill's nervousness.
But Varric's still better, of course!

People stepping on flowers makes Merrill reveal her inner She-Hulk.

Hm... I see nothing in this article that would change my oppinion on Isabella.
Waht she does I don't see as empowerment, strength or whatever...

Or at least the major part of it
Why
When are you people going to start making sense

Morrigan: Cynical
Alistair: Whiny and Immature
Oghren: A drunken dwarf (to be fair, he is... but there's a LOT more to him than that)
Leliana: Ditzy and French (Orlesian w/e, try telling me they're *not* the same >_>)
Sten: Militaristic
Dog: Dawg...
Shale: A mother****ing golem that stomps birds.
Wynne: A motherly old lady
Zevran: Suave
Do these impressions just seem *wrong* to you? Of course not, it's intentional that we get some sort of character archetype to associate with them but while the initial character nuances are things that linger with them, you get to know them a lot more as the game progresses and see through chinks in their initial character masks. Morrigan's conflict with her mother and her innate curiosity constantly reflects in her discussions with the warden and Sten's love for painting and fine art provide an interesting look into everyone's (sic) favorite Qunari's softer side. These are things we learn as the game goes on and if we just cling to initial impressions, then we simply miss the point of these characters. (The only character that doesn't really change much over time in the dragon age series(IMO) was Dog, because who wants that dawg to change? )
In any case I hope you'll take a closer look at isabela's dialogue and pay more attention to what she does, because she's not the one-dimensional buxom you seem to think she is.

As you continue to play, you will see another side to Isabela. And personally I prefer her, she is my pirate queen :3 I dislike Merrill's character and I feel like she doesn't really grow that much as a person throughout the game as opposed to Isabela.

There are those (even in this thread) who dismiss her as a stereotype because they never got past the outer shell to the soft, chewy center. It is their loss.

@OP - To echo many who have posted here, there is much more to Isabela (and many of the characters) than meets the eye. If you're still playing through and adding her to the party more often, I would suggest adding Aveline to that party as well. Much of Isabela's character development can be seen within her interactions with the other companions over the course of the game, in particular with the Guard Captain. There's some great banter there.
This is excellent advice. I had Aveline, Isabela, and Varric, in my first playthrough and it was so hilarious and heartwarming to watch Aveline and Isabela become friends.

I felt nothing for these characters. Walking stereotypes with no complexity whatsoever. Feel free to disagree, but why are you shocked?Tasmen wrote...
