I swear, it feels like the devs hate DA:O.

Thing is, because it's not the same devs there's a chance that they may well do.

"classic RPG" is a term Laidlaw uses and that's what I think most people want, but there's not been any news so far that's what we'll get.

If i saw that second video before the release of DA2 it would've multiplied my disappointment x10.

@HeriocGreyWarden - lol

Even before Origins was released they were already set with their new vision of DA2.  IMO, Origins already modernized the crpg for the consoles.  I had no intention of buying Origins because my computer was too old for the newer games coming out and I had no plan of upgrading.  Plus, western rpgs on consoles were always lame.  Origins was given to me as a gift, and I loved it.  Finally, a western rpg that played great on the console.  But, oh no,  the sequel must match the biggest selling type of console games; CoD!

Skyrim has terrible graphics, floaty gameplay where weapons don't even touch enemies, a boring world, boring story, bad voice acting, and bad animation. Not to mention the bugs....

Just like GTA IV, Skyrim is/was extremely overrated.

Wow, I've put nearly 300 hours into Skyrim and I'm still discovering new content from the original game. Talk about differences in taste...

I think BioWare could definitely add more freedom of exploration and add more details to their world without sacrificing the kind of game they like to make. DA2 felt sterile.

Considering they are using the Dice Frostbite II engine, it looks like they are going to adopt the Skyrim's open world sandbox style. Why else would you use that engine if not to take advantage of that?

Even though I might write fan fiction about my Skyrim protagonist, my Dragon Age protagonist and my Fable: tlc protagonist finding themselves in middle earth... I want the Skyrim in my Dragon Age minimal

I do think Skyrim may have convinced people at EA and Bioware that a long game with lots of content can sell well even when compared to the shooter market, though.

Skyrim and the DA series are from two different subgenres of rpgs. While neither is a JRPG, Skyrim and DA are on the opposite ends of the spectrum of Sandbox vs Themepark.

That's not to say its a bad idea for DA to borrow some stuff from Skyrim, themepark games are usually better with sandbox elements sprinkled in, but its not a good idea to shift the DA genre to sandbox.

Many fanboys already consider the series as such.

That's not to dis-similar to my DA:O experience - I'd played the BG series way back when I was a kid, but had missed all the NWN, KOTOR progression and DA:O blew me away!

It admittedly took some time to get into, but the atmosphere and story was so good that the game afforded me the time to do that. I don't even play on-line but bought the entire thing again in the Enhanced Edition at full price just to play the DLC & extra content.

DA:O hooked casual gamers and more of the same game-wise would have done more of the same in terms of sales & "hooking"-wise, so to turn their back on that just seems silly.

DAO was awesome, as was Skyrim. They're completely different types of games though, so I don't think making DA3 'like Skyrim' is going to be the answer. Skyrim was just so amazingly awesome though, its only right that it serves as inspiration for DA3 in a way, because I played a number of games in the ES series, and my favorite had been Morrowind, but even that one I didnt really like 'that' much, it was more like, pretty good. But Skyrim just blew me away, it was such a VAST improvement, and honestly I can't even put my finger on something and say 'this is what they did, this is why its so awesome', but if Bioware can, if they can figure out how Skyrim became MILES better than anything in that series, and use it to make DA3 miles better than anything in that series, then we're all going to be winners, so I say go for that. Obviously the fact that the protagonist isn't voiced probably helps, and maybe they could make a part of the game (say for example, the Deep Roads) a bit more open-worldish, Skyrim style. I love the Deep Roads, making it bigger and more explorable is something that I would enjoy. But ultimately I trust the folks at Bioware to mine Skyrim for nuggets of awesomeness, and place them judiciously into DA3 to maximize its awesomeness.

Seems like everyone on this board compares DA2 to Skyrim - lulwut? (I don't get it)

So I guess that means BW should make DA3 a Skyrim killer to make anyone happy on the DA2 boards...

Apart from me, who would be just happy if DA2 team learned from the mistakes of DA2 and ME3...

Boo-hoo. It just so happens that Skyrim is a far superior game to DA2. It's a RPG set in a fantasy world. Of course comparisons are going to be made.

Well, the voice is a definite improvement. The dialogue wheel seems to naturally be a part of that. And I don't think I've ever even seen an "awesome button" in DA2, so I have no idea what anyone's on about.

In any case, I play Skyrim if I can stand a total lack of character development, romance, half-decent third-person views, etc. I don't want any of that in DA3.

Except that one game is a story centric strategic rpg and the other is a first person shooter with melee weapons, bows, and magic and virtually 0 story. Don't get me wrong I love Skyrim, but it's just a completely different game, and the people drawing comparisons to it (like yourself) are idiots.

With that said, DA should stay DA and TES should stay TES, they don't need to be similar to each other to succeed becuase they are two very different rpgs with two different markets and they really do not need to be compared either. If anything, I would compare DA to either the Witcher or Baldur's Gate as it has infinitely more similarities to those games than it does to TES.

If this means no depth in characters, boring quests, terrible dialog tree and one liner companions, no thanks. I love Skyrim, but only when it comes to the gameplay and exploration.

Really they're 2 different kind of games.

Dragon Age: Origins.

I'll take Origins over *any* TES game any day of the week. Better gameplay, better story, better characters, more RPG elements, more traditional, more depth, better character creator (race actually matters), better artstyle, more atmospheric, better dialogue, better lore, better side quests and so on.

Skyrim can't even compare. I mean Dragon's Dogma pretty much showed the world that a company developing an open world action-RPG for the first time can even do better than what Bethesda has been doing for two decades now. Bethesda should feel so ashamed that a new IP instantly beat their IP in terms of...well pretty much everything!

If Bioware are going down the route of action-RPG as DA2 shows then Dragon's Dogma is where to look because everyone pretty much agrees it has some of the best combat in an action-RPG.
