I'll bet it's an A-RPG. Might even have a touch of open world.
By BioWare's own terminology, every game they've ever made is an "action RPG."
It's a marketing term. It's basically coded speech for, "An RPG, but cool" aimed at people who think standard RPGs are boring.
Ask any ten people on the BSN what an action RPG is and you'll get ten definitions. Some, in contrast to the use in marketing, use it as a pejorative to imply the game is simple or dumb.
There's little consistent differentiation between action RPGs and their standard cousins.

A great story with choices that matter
Somehow this sounds quite familiar

BioWare has actually claimed that DAO was an A-RPG, so their definition seems pretty broad.Atakuma wrote...
They aren't making an A-RPG and there never was controller support.

Instead of supporting the muddy-ing of the water, can't we agree that there SHOULD be fairly solid definitions to words or terms? If there aren't, why use them?
And before you say "I agree, we shouldn't use them!" - I think plenty of consumers would like to know if a game relies more on character skill or player skill, if it's real time or turn based, etc.... and having simple terms that you can use instead of having to explain at length a list of features, is HELPFUL.
Words are meant to convey generally accepted meanings. Just because marketers and politicians and other sophists want to convince you that "black can mean white, up can mean down, and we shouldn't quibble over my saying something to you made you think something I wanted you to think even if that wasn't what was true", do we have to HELP them by saying "well, what is truth or fact, really?"
*shakes his head sadly*

I don't, I have my own definiton: If it has twitch mechanics, it's an action RPG. If it doesn't, it isn't. But not everyone shares that definition, certainly not BioWare, and it's off-topic for this thread so I didn't get into this.
As an off-topic aside, however, it is perfectly reasonable to explain how - right now, in this particular thread and context - certain terms shouldn't be taken entirely seriously. In another thread, perhaps, there could be real back-and-forth about what precisely one is.

The hell? Apparently snark is no longer allowed on the BSN.

I´m not really supprised that they use the frostbite engine. EA wants to roll it out for most/all their games, they use it for Generals and get direct help from DICE with converting the engine to their needs. And yeah, bye the way... its a great pice of software

Yeah. I wonder if buying licenses in bulk give them a discount? That means more money to spend on the game!

Marketing will sell this as deep, thought provoking, and visceral. Your choices will matter, new features will surprise and delight, press "A" for awesome, think like a general, fight like a Spartan, a dark, mature and edgy story yadayadayada,......
I think that covers most of it?
(I made this post so none of us would act surprised when they see one of these pop up. It's standard marketing speak, people.)

I don´t know about licensing.... software contracts can be tricky.... (believe me!) Coule be that EA somehow own part of the engine and can destribute it at will (me speculting.... but there is one thing i bet on... we will never know the truth about DICE and EA contract situation with frostbite 2 engine)
back to topic:
there is one thing that worrys me.... will it be play for free? or a normal boxed AAA title.
EA did make it clear that they want to go heavily into free to play....

Frostbite looks great, Mirrors Edge runs on it and Faith's hands do not look like she has been sticking her hands in a wood chipper.
