As far as the tweet regarding seeing the cover to World of Thedas and Gaider's blog having cover art, those are two different things, for anyone that is curious. The World of Thedas is an encyclopedia of knowledge and art (that I'm really excited for!) and Gaider posted the cover art for the last 3-issue arc of the Dark Horse comics that he's writing (which I am also really excited for!).

Yes, I was also wondering about that. The tweet presumably was referring to the "real" cover of the World of Thedas encyclopedia that features Morrigan and can be seen in the Amazon preview.  LOL Unless they changed the cover *again*!

I'm inclined to go with what Mike says, as I don't think he would jerk fans around by saying 2013, when in reality is it fiscal 2013, which could be in real-world 2014.

I believe it was also said at one time "Fall 2013," wasn't it? I don't think you can do any juggling with something as concrete as that... then again, I don't have a quote that says that handy. I feel like it was maybe Priestly?

Well, logic dictates that if they're going to release it this year, it'll be a holiday release, which would BE sometime late fall.  November or some such.  But of course, they could do what they did with ME3... and give themselves until the very end of the fiscal year, which  would be next march.

You only have one opportunity to make a first impression.

Would Mike have specified if he meant fiscal year 2013?
It's a pretty big difference between ~Nov 2013 and March 2014.

I think it would be cool if Bioware gave us a solid date to give us information.

Why not April 1st? /trollface

Fiscal year 2013 ends in March this year (we're currently in Q4 2013). As of April 2013, EA switches over to fiscal year 2014 (i.e. Q1 2014). That could be the source of a lot of confusion, since any game releasing in the last three quarters of 2013 is actually counted as fiscal year 2014 by EA.

Without actually reading Mike's mind, I'm 99.99999% sure he meant calendar year 2013. Only EA executives and such seem to talk about quarters and fiscal years, probably because to people who aren't investors or analysts it's so silly and confusing.

Even if Mike hadn't confirmed it, Chris Priestly also said a while ago that the team was aiming for a Fall 2013 release. The marketing for Gaider's/Dark Horse's new comic mentions a new game in 2013.

EA's own press release announcing DA3 (back in September 2012) mentioned late 2013.

Ah that clears things up. I wasn't too familiar with how fiscal years work.
I also assumed Mike meant calender year 2013, but there's so many people saying this and that it gets confusing.

If the game is going to launch late 2013 and not be an ugly abomination there's no way they wouldn't have anything presentable at this point in time. That's just not how AAA games are developed.
.

Says who? Nobody here is a game developer or even a member of the industry. We know literally nothing about Bioware's strategy or internal reasoning, EA's release schedule (changes to which would require publicly notifying investors), the timeframe of the game's development or even its state of completion at the moment . Every post about DA3's release or marketing (mine included) is the amateur opinion of a fan of the game, it's all posturing and speculation until the developers themselves decide to say something more.

You don't have to be a game maker to know that AAA games aren't announced with no fanfare, go months and months with nothing to show, and leave themselves with less than a year between showing a single screenshot and release. I've been buying games since the NES. I'm no stranger to this.

You have it backward. Fiscal 2013 ends in calendar 2014. We're currently in fiscal 2012.

Edit-- Just looked it up and fiscal years vary between industries and countries. Weird.

It's surprising we haven't even got a trailer or anything yet considering they are planning to release the game this year...

Most games being released this year we have seen a trailer or two.

Aiming for the ideal first impression presenting the game such that it swoops down upon us?

No pressure.

Other than that, I'd almost hoped/feared that somewhere in the dev lair of Edmonton (was it?) someone threw his arms in the air and said, "Who needs to attract new fans if there's all those folks on BSN?" - with the game turning out accordingly, no innovation whatsoever, and any sense of rationality gotten thrown under the roaring bus of nostalgia.

"All your fanbase are belong to us", after all.

Some games slated for 2014 have trailers and footage already, like Beyond:Two Souls.

I'm hoping that there will actually be LESS waiting once they start showing us actual stuff from the game. I think...THINK...that they're waiting later than usual to announce so the game is actually closer to finished (or at least presentable) and, hopefully, the informational drip feed leading up to release will be a little more steady and generous than it usually is. Maybe more frequently developer diaries and that sort of thing. So it could be a very good thing.

Battlefield 3 the largest release in EA history, 2011 25 october. First ingame screens officially published( they leaked earlier) around 1 March. A teaser trailer was up 3 Feb and first gameplay vid was up 22 Feb (no release date was set when that vid came up only said Fall 2011).

If EA continue to release their FPS games at the time they usually do then BF4 would be released in Oct 2013 and we still have not seen a single screenshot.

Dragon age 2 had its first screenshot published mid July 2010 and was released March 8 2011.
EA's marketing starts around 8 months before release if you go by their history. If we have nothing at mid march I would guess it wont be a Fall release. Im hoping we get more after the Sony thingy 20 Feb.

I hope so, but kinda doubt it, that's not exactly in the spring period that all the devs were mentioning. Plus, appearing at a PS4 event would be confirmation of DA3's presence on next-gen consoles, but they still couldn't talk about the next Xbox version because it hasn't been announced yet. They'd be stuck hyping up PS4 while awkwardly avoiding talking about any other version.

and truth is, we wouldn't want it any other way.

don't be misled by our throes of passion. they are genuine, but we can take it. we can take the pain...of waiting.. and wondering...and imagining the worse!

it's just how we are. it's like a fever. we'll be okay.

it's like the new BW, tho. they put their man-pants on. put their foot down. they seem to be taking the time to cover their butts with potential leaks these days...well, except for that one survey thing.  BW use to leak like the Titanic, but now..hmmm. Impressive.

The fans catch the fever and cry for info...and BW says:

Why would Sony use a cross-platform title to show off their new console? It makes zero sense.

To show support for the platform, EA could go there and present the games they have planned for PS4, and DA3 may be among them.

Maybe they wont even show screens or anything, but just confirm that DA3 will be on PS4.

If they will wait for the next XBOX to be announced, then we wont see anything till E3, and if they really want to launch DA3 by the end of the year (and not the fiscal year) they will have less than 5 months to market it.

My bigger bet is on GDC and PAX East (hopes for PAX, because it is a presentation more to us, fans) but i hope we see something next week.
