So I guess the argument is that a game would need a longer or equally long marketing period as a new console for it to be successful..? Could someone explain the reasoning behind that conclusion?
I think it goes like this:
E3 will be crazy this year. On top of current gen games like GTA 5, you have your regular yearly releases like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty. This year you also have Battlefield 4. And on top of those annual blockbusters, you'll have all of the hype of new consoles and everything surrounding them- the hardware itself, whatever new services Sony or MS showcase. On top of that, Sony and MS will undoubtedly have brand new, nextgen exclusive IPs that they'll be unveiling.
Assuming DA3 is launching late this year, it would need to do a lot to try and step above all that noise to make itself known. If its going to try and wow people solely on visuals, its going to likely need to do quite a bit since exclusive nextgen first party games will likely look better than multiplatform games. And DA as a franchise isn't exactly coming off of a sure fire blockbuster, so its has to sell people on its merits a little more than other established franchises would going into a third game.
And then even if DA has a huge marketing budget behind it for a late 2013 release, I'd imagine that the bigger the marketing push, the higher the sales expectations. And if it can't meet those expectations, then who knows what EA would do with DA going forward?
Now maybe DA3 is shaping up just that good that it can easily look better than the rest and make itself known easily even at something like E3 by simplu looking and playing like an awesome game! That would be pretty cool. But that's a pretty huge risk considering all of the uncertainty that goes into a console transition. Not really my concern but EA/BioWare's.

I'd hazard a guess that this is a trip to DICE in Sweden, possibly to look at work on the Frostbite 2 engine? That's Bioware's General Manager for Edmonton/Montreal and the Executive Producers for Mass Effect/Dragon Age all going.
That would make sense. DICE is in Sweden, so maybe its a broader Frostbite centric meeting. Or they're just seeing how Battlefield 4 is going, since I think many of the DICE higher ups were in the US showing off BF4 to people last week. Or they're showing off what they're doing on Dragon Age and their work on Frostbite to the DICE people?
At this point I just want to see what nextgen Frostbite 2 looks like, whether thats DA3 or BF4.
