I thought it was a Ghoul?

That doesn't answer the question one way or the other at all. All that says is that the Mother gives birth to Children. It doesn't say that other brood mothers DON'T give birth to Children. I'd be highly surprised if only sentient brood mothers gave birth to them...

 

The Children are a unique kind of Darkspawn. I recently replayed Origins and there it said that the different kind of Darkspawn are born from the different kind of Broodmothers: as in Elves give birth to Shrieks, humans Hurlocks, dwarves Genlocks and so on. Although with intelligent Broodmothers it could change. And then again, Dragon Age lore is a little bit vague and not always correct on purpose.. so it might just be this isn't the case. But I'm fairly confident that it is. 

 

Well in DA2 the area of Lothering during the Blight looks like this.

Because of this image and because the post is about the Grey Wardens and Darkspawn I think it could be Blight devestated Ferelden.

 

 

Yes. That is a concept of the Blight devastation, but there were 5 Blights in total, all taking place in different places on the Continent. Add to that, Darkspawn can roam the land between Blights as well. Bottom line, that's the Adamant fortress described in Asunder. Ferelden doesn't have deserts. And the rift, the castle, everything about that concept describes that place. And seeing as how they just teased the Western Approach location(where the fortress is)it's a safe bet that the concept is about the fortress.

Ahh sorry, my misunderstanding. For me it looks way too decrepit to be a Hurlock, it doesn't look like something that could really be a threat.

It looks really similar to the DA2 concept art of the hurlock though. And while it does look frail and decrepit, those ghouls we saw in the previous games didn't look sickly white and fragile. Larius was pretty far gone and he just looked like a very diseased human.

Unless of course ghouls turn into darkspawn now.

It seems the Venatori are all over the Western Approach.

The towers certainly look similar to the one the dragon lands on.

I don't think so. The one in the trailer looks quite well defend. Adamant has been abandoned for so long, it will take a long time to resurrect it, if they even want to at all.
