Sorry, to be clear, I think the next "big video game event in general" is the Spike VGA.

I have no clue if we're going to do something at that. In the past BioWare has used it to do reveal trailers and stuff, so it may not be the best venue for us at this point.

I don't know when our next big event will be. Safest guess would probably be E3! :P

Note that the "Buddy Qunari" is actually a fan art piece that Patrick liked and asked if he could have a copy of.

It's more Patrick interacting with a fan and having some with with said fan, and the piece itself was definitely a mashup of Casper's work combined with Dogma's Buddy Jesus.

I suspect the characters are "designed" already, but what they are doing now is writing their dialogs.

Yeah, there's a difference between being fully written, and being specc'd out for what type of character they will be and what their relationships with the PC and other companions will be.

My jerkstore tease: I read the document that details how all the companions will see each other and how those relationships evolve.  It was a pretty fun read =]

I am curious to see what the results of the survey will be. :)

I doubt they would release them (they haven't released the results of previous surveys). And it likely won't affect much of the gameplay this late in development (they are now around nine or ten months before going Gold, where the game is out of their hands). Based on comments by others, this will likely affect what kind of commercials we'll see for the game more than anything else.

Just wanted to chime in on this - the survey going live somehow flew over my head. This survey comes from the gameplay group rather than marketing. You're absolutely right - many things are fixed by this point in development, but there's still lots to do. As developers, we have mental models of how people play the game; if I only ever thought about making a game for the way *I* like to play, it would compromise a lot of other people's experiences. A survey like this helps refine our understanding of how people are going to use the interfaces and tools and bits and pieces that make up a game as big and involved as Inquisition. We can learn things about players that sometimes run counter to our assumptions, and though it's hard to see specific details in the final product, this information shapes work we do on the game and how we put things together in the end.

It's very unlikely we'd publicize the results of the survey - there's a lot of context and interpretation that needs to be applied to understand the raw numbers, especially in an opt-in online survey like this ("selection bias"? what's that?).

This is something new - as far as I know the DA team has never done a survey like this before. I'm very interested to see what people have to say, and how many responses we get...

the link to the survey is still Dragon Age: Inquisition - Community Gameplay Styles and Preferences

Could you say what "Target Locking" is?  I think it's a term which hasn't really reached the players.

You target a baddie and you do not stray away from it. You are "locked" onto your target.

Target locking is a console feature: because of how directional autotargeting works to interpret the stick deflection and movement direction, if you don't want your target changing, you need to tell the game explicitly. In DAO and DA2 it was on left stick click. This is why we ask questions like this on the survey - I'm guessing you're not the only person who didn't know what it was or how it worked, which means we need to do a better job with the controls (or at least teaching them!).

bioware should bring back shapeshifting

Shapeshifting has been given the short end of the stick in amny of it's games.  I think they have a rela ahrd time balancing it.
I find that in most games it starts out useful for a level or two but very soon becomes under powered compared to other available spells and too dangerous for the caster.  I'd like to see a bit of a druid type class with some more useful unique abilites.

Besides the design/balance implications, the other thing about shapeshifting that makes it tricky on the implementation side is that it requires essentially the same performance footprint as another party character (because you can't afford to load and unload a character's worth of assets in the middle of combat). We have a runtime budget for number of creatures in combat that we have to stick to for memory and performance reasons, and party members are heavier than most enemies...

Just one more thing we have to balance in the great exercise in tradeoffs we call game production!

PAX Australia's timing is likely not in any way influenced by when we plan on releasing Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Let's also note that Gaider doesn't write every single companion. The others could of already been completed, just not tweeted about.

Came in here to say this, only to see you have said it already.  Thanks! :D

It's important to also note that we knew we were pushing the date before you guys did, and with that comes opportunities to look at other things and have more iteration.

It definitely won't be gold. I suspect clst may be referring to Alpha (i.e. some notion of feature complete) however.

Probably not as much as people said to me.

I always considered Ryu to be more of a Shoryuken kinda guy though B)

This is really interesting, since a lot of critical feedback after the game launch seemed to suggest people wouldn't have found the opening scene of the game so jarring if we'd had a slower opening and a chance to get to know the Hawke family. At least it was being considered at one point, although it's unfortunate that the resources weren't there to do it.

I wouldn't take David's comment as a "we didn't have the time" type of resources, but rather more of a "We're fundamentally not going to spend much time there." With more time/resources, it's very possible that they'd have been spent adding content to post-prologue aspects of the story.

My standard opener.

Though to defeat Ryu, you must defeat his dragon punch, not his Hurricane Kick!

Why are they working an Saturdays an Sunday anyway? Always asked myself this when David Gaider wrote he spend weekend writing.
That´s some strange working hours, are they not?

Not that's strange but still it'is because they have still one year or more if the game come out between september 2014 and beginning 2015. more we come close to release date more the working hour could change and begin  strange

Sometimes someone just wants to get some stuff done, or there is an internal deadline with some large dependencies and people waiting to get a system online.

I stuck around late on Tuesday this week just because there was some stuff I wanted to get done and I didn't get a chance to do so during the day.

People were just looking for an equivalent to Mass Effect's "N7 Day" (November 7).

It's not the release date being announced.

I think that every game has content cuts during development. Regardless of the fact that Bioware might push the release to 2015, there are going to be content cuts.

Exactly, even if the game was in development for 10+ years there would have to be content cuts. Sometimes some things just don't make sense, or cannot be occomplished technically, or someone higher up doesn't like it, or you decided to go in a different direction.  Game develop is a huge GROUP effort with many technical, time, and monetary restraints.

Poor devs though, it's never really easy.  <3

Sometimes, too, you just need to ship a game.  Give game developers an infinite budget and you'll get a game that never ships.

No call or email, so I guess I didn't get in to the playtest. Ah well. That's probably best for my bank account. Still, 4-ish hour bus ride each way woulda been worth it.

You know, it must be the craziest feeling, knowing people are willing to brave 4 hour bus rides to help out on your project with no expectation of pay.

EDIT: That is absolutely not a jab at you. I would have done the same for sure.

It's stupendously flattering.

I'm guessing the game is going to get A LOT of polishing, considering we're like 10ish months away from launch and they are already at this stage

What stage is that?

There's still a good chunk of "real" work that needs to be done still haha.  She's not a finished game yet =]
