Faction leaders wasn't that bad. We are talking about companions. Playable party characters. I'm not sure it's confirmed but 6vs3 is really way flung off the chart. It wouldn't that bad if it's 5v4. Honestly i'm really disappointed on this. Anyway how is it not on topic? Is it i have to talk about Blackwall to be on topic?

David explained his thinking about that here:

I'll just jump in and say this:

There seems to be quite the laser-like focus on party members. Understandable, perhaps, considering those are the characters with whom you spend a great deal of time...but if we're to talk in terms of representation I'm a bit uncertain why 5:4 would be awesome and 6:3 somehow equates to horribleness on our part. Naturally your mileage will vary, in terms of what you want to see, and I won't tell you what that should be.

We. however, approach the equation a little differently. We come up with roughly even numbers in our concepts, even across gender lines, across racial lines as well as across classes. We (as in the team, not just the writers) pick the concepts that we like the most, and while there's always a point where we discuss diversity, there are many points of diversity we have to consider. Class diversity is perhaps highest on the list (in terms of gameplay utility), along with a diversity of viewpoints and how they intersect with the story. Gender diversity is also considered, but when we look at it in terms of representation, we look at it in terms of representation across the entire story—not just in the party.

Considering Inquisition takes place in a world where many (if not most) of the world's power players are female (the ruler of Orlais, the head of the Chantry and the Circle of Magi, possibly the ruler of Ferelden and others...not to mention the many characters outside of the party with whom you will also be deeply involved. I can honestly say I don't think we're doing badly on that front, not enough to feel we should switch the gender of a character concept we like to hit an arbitary number in this one group of characters. It sounds like it might be easy to do, but that's never been how character concepts come to be--we're not just flipping switches on a variety of grids until we hit some perfect balance for every desire and then writing interesting stories.

If you disagree, and feel we've done poorly even short of seeing the rest of the cast, then so be it. I completely understand.

Sebastian wasn't awful but he didn't have as big a part as the 'main' companions. When he wasn't being condescending he was naive and otherwise harmless.  I guess he didn't make that much of an impact though, beyond getting really (and understandably) stroppy over Anders' big ba-da-boom.

I never played Mark Of The Assassin, so all I know of Tallis is the Redemption series.  She seems kind of amusing in a classic maverick rogue kind of way.  I imagine my snarky mage Galen Hawke could've gotten on well with her, but I gather she isn't widely liked.

Mostly I think its that she tended to be a bit condescending in MotA. More than that, there was never really an option to get the best of her or try to disagree with her in the end. That rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Do I have 2 play the 1st 2 games to 'get' the new game inquisition? Not played em but I've read DA books&comics

Mark Darrah @BioMarkDarrah

Definitely not. Great place to start.

Jonathan Warner @Bio_Warner

You can dive right in at Inquisition! No need at all to play the others to understand what's going on.

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

I don’t fly to LA until tomorrow. To everyone arriving before me: try to leave a bit of coffee in the city. I’ll need it.

David explained his thinking about that here:

Thanks for the linking but i disagree with David. He can explain 10 pages all he want but doesn't mean i agree. 6v3 is really bad on gender equality and it will be pointless even if i explained why for 100 page. Heck why don't even he said by all considerations, having 8vs1 is the most proper ratio in terms of gameplay wise? I don't buy it seriously. Most of the games are designed based on preferences and favoritism of what the developers intended. It's like how imbalance a Demon Hunter vs a Monk in Diablo 3 simply because the developers love Demon Hunter and it should be the most broken class, for example. This is really very bad and disappointing. Thanks again.

I hope DHMG is revealed today! I'll be running home on my lunch break to check fb and this Twitter thread as thoroughly as fifteen minutes will allow me.

And just to throw my off-topic two cents in, wouldn't gender equality be creating companions without feeling the need to fill some kind of gender balance and letting the ratio fall where it may? I'd rather 9 interesting, organically crafted companions than 8 + this chick cause there needs to be an even amount of women. Same goes for men.

Troll-bait is troll-bait^^^^
Edit: inb4 mod, because it is off-topic and derailing and inflammatory.

I'm expressing my one, own legit disappointment on the unfair treatment of gender inequality in the representation of the number of companions. You are the one who is troll-baiting. Perhaps you should contribute into discussion rather than fan the flames? Perhaps you feel nice of others' disappointment? Perhaps you feel how great you are that one is disappointed?

David explained his thinking about that here:

Dave has been around long enough to know people focus on two things. The party members and the LI split.

Ha. In case you can't see, here's the "Breach" that Scylla mentioned is currently in space somewhere over the northern hemisphere:

Edit: wait, no, this is not a current picture. Still pretty though.

Uh-huh, that 'Great place to start' talk again.

"Great place to start" is fine.  And makes sense really, DA games are stand alone stories with different protagonists.

Saying that ME3 was the "best place to start" was just silly though.

What else do you expect them to say, though?

"Please don't buy our game"

"You totally won't understand it, new people shouldn't play. We don't need money anyway!"

I remember when I was a lad that developer's weren't afraid to say "Hey, here's a whole bunch of characters. If you don't recognize a single one, this isn't your game yet."

Not coincidentally, however, games did not cost at times as ridiculously much as $250 million to produce back then, either!

As long as they don't imply that playing the previous games is a bad thing, like "best place to start" does, I'm happy.

How about "You don't need to play the other games to have a great experience.  But if you do, the experience gets taken to a whole new level"

But yes, each Dragon Age game focuses on a different character in a different location.  So it makes sense that each one stands on its own, and you can jump in at any time.

Why not encourage people to buy the previous games so they could enjoy ME3 even more? Then they'd get even more money, and wouldn't be spouting complete rubbish that obviously isn't true.
