Sure, but she's trying to fight her base instincts, unless you give her "the final push".

 

You have to remember she's been a merciless killer before. And after Origins, she's not a Chantry sister anymore, hardened or unhardened. In DA2, she's back to killing as Sister Nightingale, agent of the Divine. In the books, she's also no innocent Chantry sister. I like to believe the Blight and the years after that changed her, whether you hardened her or not.

Just kidding. Anyway, she never had a problem killing people. Hell, she tries to kill the Warden just on principle. She sets up Hawke to draw her marks out. She's compassionate, yes, but she's also a highly trained professional killer.

 

So her snapping the neck of her torturer (presumably, to get out of life-threatening situation) shouldn't come as a surprise.

It makes me wonder what the point of giving the Warden the choice of hardening her is since it seems she hardens no matter what you do.

Well, there's quite a few choices that won't matter in the end. That will always be the case.

But hardening generally was meant to open up possibilities within the game, the way I see it. The wiki pretty much covers that here.

But you'd think a choice dealing with a companion would matter. I see you're point though, the fact that she's there in the first place shows how that is the case.
