He is a demon because he adversely reacted to the litany of Adralla in the book which was created to fight demons and blood mages.

 

He is *demonic*. But he isn't an outright demon. He also has aspects of spirits and aspects of humanity (to an extent that to claim he is only pretending to be human, is to be ignorant of what he is formed of).

 

He's there to demonstrate that while Fade entities generally work in bipolar spirit/demon ways, they are not necessarily entirely bound by being one or the other. Cole also works as a spirit does. And also as a human does (thus why he can fight in our party as an ally to the hero instead of, I dunno, feed off everyone like demons do).

He reacted because he uses blood magic to retain his form.

 

Whether Fade Spirit or demon, he's definitely not human, nor an abomination like Anders.  His physical body seems to be a purely magical construct.

Honestly, I sort of concluded that he was a shade that had assumed a human's guise so completely that he mistook himself for that human and adopted his memories.  His body simply grew the way he thought a human's should.

The mass murdering people and taking over a boys body/spirit? Kinda totters him in that direction IMO, cause he sure ain't a benevolent spirit.

 

At that point he isn't benevolent, yes. But he also isn't evil. He is reminded of his actions, doesn't like it, and goes away, essentially trying to figure out what he is and what he wants to do. Help, or hurt? He granted a quick death to those who wished it and didn't want to suffer. In some cases this is benevolent. In others, not so much. Tranquility or death?

He's not a corpse per se...he's still Cole.. he's just carrying an extra passenger 

 

Think of it as Anders/Justice with Justice having taken complete control. 

 

The original Cole is dead, the current Cole made it clear he wasn't able to save him.  Considering Cole's identity confusion, it's likely that he imprinted the original Cole's psyche.  Spirits and demons can read minds, that's how they create things in the Fade, etc.

The writers refuse to answer about the food stuff, because things "got out of control" (which I can understand), so we probably will not find out about what foods the rest are until after release. But I'm putting my money on Cole being surprise meatballs.
