So now we have a definitive answer to this question!

User

In #DAI will our companions have thier own mounts, or will they chase after us as we travel on our mounts?

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw

Neither. They disappear until you hop off.

Party banter is pretty darn important to me sooo...my poor Inquisitor will be running all those big areas with her party

Opens up a new question now:

Do companion conversations happen when mounted?

I expect I'll be using mounts to quickly cover ground I've already explored. That was always tedious in DAO and DA2.

They are making party banter awesomer and you can join in too, it's gonna be great

They are making these gigantic scenarios you´ll spend seven hours walking through unless you get a horse

If you get a horse your companions disappear

You've got a choice: to sacrifice banter or to slog through gigantic maps you will pretty soon learn to hate because it takes seven hours on foot

To me it sounds like the writers and the level people are working against each other

Maybe they don't have anything to say during these excursions to the countryside anyways so nothing is lost.

Well I hope the perspective is changed so that we can imagine them on mounts behind the inquisitor.

Cole, Iton Bull. Cass for my first party most likely.

Same here.  As I prefer 2 mage parties, I am leaning toward playing a female dalish mage ... and getting involved in city/dalish elf politics

How about updating the store with some Lithos for DAI? I need something for everyone to sign @ PAX!

Hey, people that kept having their horse dying off and ended up walking everywhere in Skyrim (*cough*me*cough*) are used to walking instead of riding horses over long distances in games anyway :P. I definitely won't risk missing banters on my first playthrough. Maybe after the first one I'll know when the companions stay silent and only then will I use a mount.

Or maybe party banter generally doesn't occur in the open countryside and is limited to settlements and areas you can't enter while mounted. You know, sort of like how it worked in DAO?

Will we still hear companion banter while mounted?

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw

No. There’s lots to hear, and lots if reasons to not be on a horse.

I agree 100%.  specially with the skyrim part.  I was on foot till I acquired shadowmere  .

banter is way more important.

That must be disconcerting for Patrick to get home from a long day of working on Iron Bull stuff only to hear the voice coming from his wife's mouth.

But what if Iron Bull is a mount and how will that work when he's also a companion? Like, will we be able to use him as a mount, but as we do so all companions disappear including him so... would the sky tear asunder again?

Sounds about right, the party banter between Sera and Iron Bull in the demo activated in Redcliffe Village, so it will probably take place in areas where you aren't mounted.
