David Gaider debunked that a few pages ago.

Well that sucks, I was hoping for a companion (and potential LI) that had a distinguishable accent. Oh well

Saw some beautified paintovers of Solas and Sera, made me want to say a thing. http://forum.bioware...entry16854431 …

"For those who are interested, we have been very calculated when it comes to engineering our characters imperfections. The development process has a built in erosion mechanism: many stakeholders in many review meetings tend to trim away a characters humanizing flaws and oddities, leaving little more than "pretty" and "safe" . Strip and shave most game characters today and you'd be hard pressed to tell most of them apart. We've worked very hard on Inquisition to safeguard our characters from this erosion process. We want to give them more identity than just their clothes, hairstyle and makeup. It's our hope that after you've spent some time with them, our character's will be as inseparable from their quirks, flaws and oddities as your own friends and family are from theirs. "

@MattRhodesArt Thank you for saying that thing. It's heartening.

Sorry but this is one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard.

I can't even.

Oh dear. My heart is breaking.

Perhaps a little too perfunctory.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but I've been called worse things. It's something I believe strongly and which, judging by the response as well as previous instances of characters being whitewashed, others think as well.

So, *shrug*, say what you will, but I don't agree.

The artist might not have known Dorian was supposed to be a PoC? I didn't know until today reading this thread.

I don't know what his ethnicity is if he isn't white! I thoughts he was just tan.

Something approaching Mediterranean/Turkish/Middle Eastern/Indian, perhaps.

It always struck me as odd that Tevinter - supposedly influenced by the Byzantine Empire - would be so full of very Anglo-Germanic people. If it's a huge empire that's existed for centuries and includes a variety of human civilizations that were absorbed in the early years of expansion, it does make sense that there'd be a range of ethnicities within the Imperium.

(In the same way that Rome virtually assimilated people from not just Britain, Gaul or Germany, but also North Africa and the Middle East. It was enormous.)

In the case of a large Empire pre-globalization though, most of the races and ethnicity, at least physically, don't have much interaction with each other. Of course, as the Empire absorbs more groups, its culture inevitably changes slightly through trade and population disposition. But my understanding is that Dorian comes physically from the Tevinter Imperium as it is now. That is, North of Nevarra. I could be wrong though.

So that effect, the various client ethnic groups of the Tevinter Imperium should technically remain physically distinct.

And that's fair!

Though I heard apparently the whole thing was 'trolling', which is kind of even sadder.

Given the 'make Isabella whiter' mod in DA2, it's something I'm a little twitchy about.

EDIT: Indian would be the closest real world analogue.

If you'd dispensed with the insult and refrained from being rude, and simply provided your viewpoint instead, that would have been far more interesting. Oh well.

Yep, but Dorian (and his family) could be from one of those ethnic groups. We know very little about the history of Tevinter expansion, and if citizenship was given out to "client" states a long time ago, it's entirely possible for them to be in a position of power now.

(Heck, maybe the original Tevinter tribes were Middle Eastern in appearance, and the white people we've seen are the conquered client races from further south. Who knows?)

I dunno though, I haven't seen the art. I did see a redesigned "Vivienne" that was just some generic white lady though

Since we are talking character's race analogues, what is Scribbles'?

I'm outta likes. +1 like. I am very uncomfortable with the "prettier Aveline" mod and the "white Isabela" mod. Very much so.

As for Dorian's ethnic analogue, good to know!

That would be the difference between being the privileged class and the non-privileged class. Hetero protagonists are by FAR the majority, changing one so they're no longer heterosexual doesn't erase a rare example of an underprivileged group.

The same is not true the other way around.

And we are going dangerously off-topic, my fault. Back on to Twitter we go. How about those hedge mages.

I am extremely uncomfortable with them, and I wish people wouldn't use them.

(And I say that as someone who *was* dissatisfied at the level of LGBT representation in Origins, compared to the opposite-sex romances.)
