Yeah, that is tricky. I learned on my 4th play through that you had to say something to stop them from attacking you.

I think the option you should take is 'take responsibility' or something similar, which makes you blame Merrill and the clan leaves you alone (though you can't return in the camp).
There's another way that doesn't involve blaming Merrill, but I'm not sure what you have to do.
