Yes, they have unique specialization based on their history. It doesn't replace a base tree like in DA2.

Ok so I'm only on page 1643 at the moment but trying to catch up and the last couple of pages I'd read were about Alistair's parentage, I've not read the books so that was a complete shock to me, so I take it Goldanna isn't his sister then?
