I have never understood the Cullen fascination. I didn't get on the forums until well after I had played DA:O, so I was really surprised to see that he has his own Andraste/Reaver-like cult of followers. It's not that I'm surprised to see character worship in general, I completely understand the Alistair, Morrigan, or Fenris stuff: these are all main characters that are prominent in the games. Cullen, however was barely in the first game and merely a supporting roll at best in the second.

I don't think there's a female character equivelant of Cullen. Maybe I should try to build one up to his level. How about Lanaya from DA:O? Or we could actually go even more obscure...how about Sophia Dryden from the Origins DLC? Is there any interest out there for either of these two?

How can you even get a sense of who Cullen is and what he's about from such limited interaction?  Unless he's really just that hunky in the looks department and this is the sole cause for fan obsession.  I admit he's a good looking dude, but if that's the case I still want a female equivelant.  I have yet to see an in-game character model of a female that was soooo good looking that I started my own blog about her.

How about Cassandra? She's hot and has a minor role.

Sadly, it's Bethany.

...though it's not really the same.

True, there is a "Bethany Romance" mod out there that should surprise absolutely no one. Though I wouldn't compare wanting to romance a minor character (or really liking a minor character) with wanting to romance your sister

Well the Bethany group would certainly make for an interesting case study.  The one leg they have to stand on is that at least Bethany was a more prominent character than Cullen (despite the fact that she is...ahem...your sibling........).  I can see Jaime / Cersei Lannister romance apologists being on board with the Bethany thing I guess, but it's a limited demographic.

Anyway, if Cullen brings you tingly feelings, more power to him and to you (and to his character designers).

Eh, Greg Ellis as snarky Awakening Anders brings me way more tingly feelings than Cullen ever could. Bethany struck me as a weird "weird" choice because of her innocence (I mean, her nickname is "Sunshine") and she has been protected and sheltered all her life, has never had intimate relations, adores and admires you, and oh dear go, I'm going to stop now.....:?

Minor?  She and Varis frame the entire narrative.  I guess "minor" is all relative, but relative to Cullen, I would say she's much more important to the story and to Thedas at large.

But besides that, she didn't rev my engine the way Cullen seems to rev others', so it's a moot point.  Unless she has a similar following already that I'm not aware of?  I admit I dont' exactly follow the LI threads at all.

If it came between the two of them (only choosing one) in DA3, she would make WAY more sense. I see Cullen's potential as a string that can tie all three stories without "small world syndrome." But Cassandra has the Seeker title going for her. She also has that movie.....I forgot what it was called, but I'm sure some plot points in there will manifest in DA3

But Cullen being involved doesn't have to be a LI issue. None of them have to. That isn't the point of Dragon Age. It is just a nice tidbit to add some cute lines in dialogue, and that is it.

Ah, Awakening Anders.  How I missed him.  When I heard Anders was going to be in DA2 I thought, cool I'll have someone to pal around with, we'll be best buds.  But alas.  I mean I'm all for mage sympathizing, but the way he does it is just so damn dreary and joyless.  I would have liked it better if he turned completely into Justice at points in the story, but at the other points his own personality from Awakening was completely in-tact.  In Awakening, it seemed like he hated the injustice but it was always a subconscious thing for him.  That was more intriguing than an obsessive zealot.  The obsessive zealot role should have been relegated completely to Justice (or Anders when something terrible enough happened for him to "Hulk Out" into Justice).

Yeah, that always confused me. I guess because it is sort of "two people" duking it out in his mind. He retains some humor and snarky bits, but he does get a lot worse over time (which made sense, story wise).

What really messed me up was how being obsessively in love with someone you literally just meet for 7 years fit into the "possessed" aspect, regardless of how you act towards mages.

Anders (Awakening): Flirty with anyone that is pretty, looking for a good time, selfish party boy that spends time in brothels
Anders (DA2, literally one year later): "I can't stop loving you, I wake for years and ache for your touch, I would drown us in blood to keep you safe!"

Hahah yeah...I would think the romancers would have enjoyed "taming" Anders-the-fun-loving-dude much better than dealing with instantly-devoted-buzzkillington-Anders.

You would think....but some people do like the (for lack of better, less derogatory term) "Twilight"-esque romances. I am of the opinion that he was insane enough to start with. I also didn't like having to refer to the wiki to attempt to "let him down easy" without getting the sex scene (even ended up editing the wiki when it led me astray <_<)

I do not know why people are so fascinated by Cassandra! We know nothing of it! We do not know what she wants. Certainly it is beautiful woman but what do we know exactly? She wants to find the warden and hawke to "save" the world yes, but you're on. Leliana and she is too shady for me. Leliana has already lied about his past. The Chantry that are filled fanatics ready to fight to their name goddess ....

Regarding Cullen is a handsome man and he has a role to play as Hawke allowed to go. he has a good personality, friendly, intelligent.

I... I think this reaction is good.

Yes.

Signs (as in, sekrits and hints) point to Cullen being a companion, but we can't be quite sure yet. I think even apart from his legions of fans, he's a really interesting character to explore the mage/templar conflict - having experienced both the consequences of demonic possession (in Ferelden) and the actions of Templars who seem to go beyond necessary measures (in Kirkwall).

If anyone in this conflict has seen it from many angles, I think it's Cullen.

Can I just point out that the above reaction in no way shape or form is the opinion of Cullen fans in general.

Hey - I'd just like to step in and say that the Cullen squeeing in this particular topic has obviously offended or annoyed some folks. Source.

Normally, I wouldn't be bothered, since some like Cullen, some don't. But this isn't a Cullen-oriented topic, just one that might have people choosing to sometimes discuss the likelihood of our running into him in the next game.

So any non-story or non-twitter related comments about Cullen are kind of off-topic. But I'd invite anyone who loves Cullen or wants to discuss what we know about his character to join us here in the official Cullen forum. We're a friendly lot, and we enjoy a good squee as much as the next person! In-depth conversations and wild speculations are welcome too. That's what makes fandom fun.  Image IPB

Hope nobody thinks I'm being a jerk - just want to help keep things respectful for those who don't want to be "Cullen!"d at every turn!

Well the Cullen thing just kind of reminds me of the whole Morrigan and her god baby thing. In the sense that: so many people talk about it and speculate about it that it just has turned me off to the whole topic. I actually get annoyed when people bring it up.

But then I just don't respond because I have no desire to upset people who love speculating about Morrigan and her child.

Also the Nathaniel fans are breathing a sigh of relief right now, because they know that if Nate had been speculated as being a companion in DA3 instead of Cullen, that this would be them right now xDDD

*shrug* I don't mind the Cullen squees, I know if it were a character I liked, say Gideon Emry showing up as a potential VO in DA3 this thread would be unrecognizable. :P On that note, I don't get the Cullen love, other then it appears like he is the acting Alistair stand in, and that makes sense since he is Alistair.

Anywho, is it too early to be wishing for some character reveals? It feels too early and yet, here I am, wishing.

Well, it's a bit embarrassing for some of the Cullen fans, myself included, to be labeled in such a way, because we're not all fourteen year old girls who think Cullen is Justin Beiber. I don't mind being weird- or liking who I like, but damn, I'm thirty years old and I do -not- squee! Often.

Personally I don't think discussing the phenomenon that is "Cullen squeeing" is off-topic. It's the twitter thread and there was a tweet pertaining to Cullen specifically, not to mention there's very little else to discuss at this point. As an outsider, I'm intrigued by it as a sub-sub-sub-cultural phenomenon even though I am in no way a part of it. So if this thread became a Cullen squee-fest, then yes that would be off-topic, but if we are merely DISCUSSING the squeeing, then I think it's all fair.

To "squee" or not to sqee, that is the question. I too am a Cullen fangirl, almost 30 and proud mother of two... happily married and all that jazz XD. All around I'd say I'm fairly quite about it. I think the underlying excitement stems from the whole romance line that the DA and ME games cater too. I bet most of the people out there /sqeeing are romance fans all around! I drool over Chris Hemsworth dressed as Thor with the best of them! Love paranormal romance and adore all of Jane Austin's work. Mr. Darcy!!! /swoon XD. The writers for DA do an amazing job and well the artists aren't that shabby either! In the end I suppose it's really a matter of keeping things from going creapy of the forums fellow fangirls/boys. So enough with the leering XD. Save that for yourself... alone... in the dark...
LOL

This thread is not a meta-discussion of Cullen fans. I posted the voice actor picture/tweet because it's legitimate information about DA3; commentary on Cullen and commentary about the commentary should be taken to another thread.

I know there's not much to talk about at the moment (some #vaguetweets would do nicely right about now) but discussion of Cullen itself invites snarky responses, and the last thing I want to do is have a circular discussion on the character, his fans, his fans' reaction to the character, other people's reactions to the fans and the fans' responses to criticism.

So: take it elsewhere please.
