I believe he took that name because people from the Anderfels are called that way as well. I thought he originally came from the Anderfels but did grow up in the Circle. I also thought his name was not the one he was given at birth, as in he came to be known as Anders but no one knows his true name.

I don't recall a single reference to "Anders" being an assumed name.

Nope. There are plenty of people named Scott that aren't scotts. Maybe his ancestry is Ander, but I recall that he grew up in Ferelden's circle.

He was born in the Anderfels, and transferred to the Ferelden Circle as a child, iirc. (Probably to separate him from a mage mother?)

Is it weird that my first though upon hearing that was "Oh, Vivienne is from the Free Marches, just like... nobody!"?

 

I mean seriously, the Hawkes, Aveline, and Merrill are from Ferelden, Anders is of course an Ander, Varric is from Orzammar, Isabela is from Rivain, and Fenris is from Tevinter. The only actual Marcher is Sebastian, the black sheep of DA2 companions. I feel like we spent a whole game there and learned nothing about the Free Marches as a culture.

 

The Amells were Kirkwallers originally.

 

House Tethras is from Orzammar, but were banished to the surface before Varric was born, so in all probability, he grew up around Kirkwall too.

The whole "Anders" being a nickname thing was something one of the devs stated. I don't think there's any evidence for it in any of the games. I think it was as part of a discussion about Isabela (who also doesn't go by her birth name, which was Naishe)

Thanks. It seems a little silly to me not to mention this in the games or any other product, yet make it a thing. I wonder if we'll ever find out what his real name is... (He's dead in most of my playthroughs, so...)

So Anders is a Ferelden of Ander descent then.

If it's not Natasha Little, she does sound a bit like Helena Bonham Carter, who (I think) DG wanted to voice Morrigan at one time. But I'm probably off.
