I rivaled her in one play through and friended her in another. Even though it is hard to be mean to Merrill the rival path is for her own good. That mirror is bad news and if you friend her, her clan get's wiped out and she learns nothing. I think her breaking the mirror is the best thing she's done and I told her to help the Alienage. I don't hate Merrill on the contrary I love Merrill (Eve Myles did a fantastic job with her) and because of this I couldn't let that mirror destroy her.
Yeah, exactly. My Hawke was trying to look after her, which is why he didn't approve of her blood magic or the mirror. But she really seemed to hate him for it. It was funny when she threw him out of her house though.

Idk if that's what they really mean, but it seems that way. And how else would it matter than sum consequence in DA3?
this has real giggity potential.
Well, it potentially wiped out her entire clan. Of course, that's the consequence of her TRYING to fix the mirror (it happens either way) but I guess it could still be what he meant.
I wonder how they could use it if that is what they're doing? I mean, what happens if you didn't fix it? Nothing?
Merrill's clan was alive when I left DA2.
I'm interested in the idea that sumthing we did from DA2 would have even a small consequence in DA2. Whether, the Mirror thing, or sumthing else.
I wish I knew what the question , or comment, was that Mike was responding to w/that.

Oh yeah that was hilarious because My Hawke was alone and had to fight off six waves of gangs by herself

This sums up how I feel about her. Well said.

I never let Merrill fix the mirror and I hope they don't give the mirror thing the same treatment they gave to the (ME3 SPOILER AHEAD!)
Rachni queen in ME3.
(/ME3 SPOILER)
Seriously, I'd rather be denied game content and see nothing happening than "Oooh, remember that mirror you didn't let Merrill fix? Looks like it fixed itself!"

Thank goodness, cuz I wouldn't want that, either. I just hope this is a sign that at least sum of your choices Might carry over into the next game.
We'll see, tho.

So Merrils mirror could be the portal between the worlds, unleashing hordes of demons into the land, which was mentioned earlier. This event might indeed set the scene for the Inquisition.
I think that's more likely to be the eluvian that Morrigan went through if anything, particularly because Merill can smash the mirror.

Mike Laidlaw, Creative Director (DA3): Merrill fixing the mirror was a ‘bad call’
Unless fixing it goes against my agenda in the DA universe like helping the chantry and the templars, it will not be a bad call no matter what happens. Either way I stand by my decision of helping Merril fix the mirror.

I was thinking the same thing, also in terms of Maleon'a genophage cure. I don't think spoiler flags are needed for a one year old game, honestly.
I think people are taking the Tweet about this a little farther than they should. I took it as Laidlaw saying that having the plot/focus about Merrill being about the mirror was a bad idea, since she either destroys it or nothing ever really comes out of it. I felt like no matter how you played it, it was a very "dead end" plot line.

I actually really really hope that is all he is saying -- I feel a little overwhelmed coming into this thread and seeing so much discussion on one small comment (I know that's was BSN does best, but still).
I just don't want the storyling with the Eluvian to boil down to a binary good/bad choice because I thought it was more interesting then that.

Only if they do another Leliana on us. What is dead should remain dead. :innocent:

But why single out Merrill when many plots end up dead/cold in DA2?

You don't have to be really mean to her in order to rival her, you can be nothing but nice and as long as you're close to but not fully Friendship you can not give her the Arulin'holme (shaper thing) and it will reverse the points minus 15 points, then if you destroy the the Blood Magic tomes you're not really being mean so much as you're helping her for her own good and disagreeing with Blood Magic. Thats what I did anyway lol.
Sorry if this isn't the place to say it folks.
