Well it doesn't suit her no-nonsense personality. She might be not so tough deep down but at the same time I don't think she would wear something so...open and revealing for the world to see.

In heraldry, hearts represent truth, goodness, and charity.  But I think her bio said she was a secret romantic.

Here we go

The human heart has had various meanings throughout human history, especially in coat of arms. A typical meaning for a heart would have been "Charity, Sincerity". Both of which are chivalric virtues, hence why knights and perhaps Cassandra would wear hearts.

Its also possible that the heart is a promient symbol of her family's coat of arms, which would give Cassandra another reason to put hearts on her armor. Think of it as a way to take "the honor of her family" into battle with her.

Though to be honest, I wouldn't be suprised if the artist that draws her just put hearts on her armor in order to soft up a bit the severity of Cassandra's visual tone.

I think the hearts on her armor are a wonderful addition! As quoted above, the heraldry is usually associated with sincerity, kindness, etc. also they are black, a color associated with constancy/devotion (or mourning, but I think it's the former in this case). And I've always taken the use of "romantic" as used in association with Cassandra as meant in a classical sense: idealism, visionary. Often in an ultimately bittersweet manner. It always confused me when people took her referring to Hawkes actions as "romantic" in DA2 as an expression of ardour when I always took it as one of admiration for the (possibly) quixotic aspects of the story.

...aww, I wish our companions could have mounts, I'd name Cassandra's Rosinante, lol.
