I think by "mixed success" they mean Mass Effect: Deception.

What could possibly give you that idea, dear EP?

Am sure that's akin to saying that the Jacob romance was a "mixed success". ![]()
(and f***, I still have seething hate for the horsesh*t known as ME: Deception.....)
I really didn't expect humans to be gated out of any romances.
Not that I'm complaining.
DEVS PLEASE CLARIFY AND CONFIRM/DENY
But you can kind of assume right? Cullen and Cassandra straight. Josephine, Iron Bull bi. Sera and Dorian gay. This has to be 2/4/2 so he and one other would be bi and race gated.
Possibly. But it could also very well be two complementary gender/sexuality options who are both race gated and one more bisexual option too. To me, it seems likely that it will be 2/4/2, but I'm not holding my breath at this point.

I never read any of the Mass Effect novels. Was it that bad?

I'm positively thrilled that humans are being gated from a romance. It contradicts the idea that just because they are the most played race, they will not get restricted in any way.

We literally assembled a Google Document with hundreds of grievous canon discrepancies. Also, Kai Leng was effectively ruined prior to the launch of ME3 in the minds of the many.
As a special bonus, it was even written terribly.
Ah, so Solas is one of the race-gated LI's. 'Twas curious if he was for elves only. Seems I was correct on that assumption. Whoop! I do feel sorry, though, for those who wanted to romance him with the other races.
But, hey, at least he's an LI, right?
(Watch Beardy be the other LI, straight, for female humans only... poor forums gonna be lit like the 4th of July. Not that I'd mind, of course. Beardy's one fine specimen of man.)
Since Ser Darrah didn't say "female elves only," I'm gonna assume he's available to romance by both elf genders. Day made! Arigatou for the slip, Ser, if it was intentional or just an "Oops!" moment. Not gonna lie, I'd totally dig another "Oops!" moment regarding the other LI. ![]()

Same, though I'm not sure how I feel about elf only.
My male elf is going to be romancing Cassandra, after all, and I was considering 'manching Bull with one too. Not sure I'd want to play one on my third playthrough as well!

Judas. I wanted to romance Solas with male human mage.

I'd like to stress the fact that this is always the best path to take. Never assume, no matter how likely something seems. Take Cullen for example. Some folks have as much as confirmed in his head he's one of the race-gated romance options. While it's still possible, this Solas revelation has actively diminished the odds. Meanwhile, Solas was as much as assumed to be completely open by a fair few of his diehards based on what we know of his personality. This bombshell blew open what seemed likely.

Nah, there's Cullen for that (race gated or not).
Why everyone assumes Blackwall will be the other LI and not Viv?
SOLAS SURELY YOU OF ALL PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW
THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING
Nah, there's Cullen for that (race gated or not).
Why everyone assumes Blackwall will be the other LI and not Viv?
It was heavily implied that only one of the remaining unrevealed LI's would be race-gated, and I can't see Vivienne not being race gated from what we know about her, so...
Who knows, though.

Pfff, they're weak.

They got an external writer to continue the story of three earlier novels, and he basically killed off every major character, messed up the timeline, ignored a character's autism, implied that a gay character had feelings for asari and in the end the book meant absolutely nothing in the wider ME IP.
The ME lore was also terribly researched and the writing/editing was poor. It sounded Bioware had pointed him towards the Wiki and said go crazy - and the worst part was that Casey Hudson kept tweeting about reading and checking the book prior to its launch.

I can see her being race-gated, she probably has some kind of standards. We didn't expect Solas to be one too and boom, that tweet.

Playing DAI. Just looked at upgrade item, reread description, said, "Are you serious?", and started cackling uncontrollably.

The most wonderful thing about Deception is how remarkably easy it is for every single one of its readers to file it away as noncanon. While we never did get that revised edition BioWare talked about working on at one point, and it's clear to me they'll never come right out as officially remove it from canon since currently-existing copies can still move units, the fandom has nigh-universally dethroned its status and I feel like I'd sooner get struck by lightning than watch the next Mass Effect game reference it at all.

That bad? Lord have mercy, sounds like that guy did a number on that book.
