I understand what they're trying to do with it, and as I said I don't really mind it. But I think the overall shift from reacting to threats to preparing for threats is what is causing people stress. It sort of forces a micro-managing playstyle regardless of what difficulty you're playing on. Now when I embark out the door to explore or do missions I need to spend time fine-tuning everything I need for the threats I am likely to face in the area I'm traveling to, as well as how well I can sustain myself should unexpected threats arise.
In games past, as long as you were playing on the right difficulty, you could likely just have someone such as Wynne be a constant in your party and feel generally secure that she had the toolset (that wasn't bound by how many supplies you could fit in your pocket) to face whatever you might encounter.
With the new style of healing you're going to be worried every time you step out the door whether you've got everything you need, or end up having to return to camp every 15 minutes.
Whether or not I or anyone else agrees with it, there is a sizable segment of the playerbase that just wants to pick their favorite companions and walk out the door and not worry about whether they prepared right. If there were healing spells instead of a fixed amount of potions or focus based abilities, I think people would be much more secure in their ability to react to the threats in the game world.
I think the bolded is still true. If there's folks who want to "walk out the door and not worry" about preparation, then maybe they should be playing on Easy or maybe Normal (depending on how it's balanced). Similarly, the hardcore rpg folks would probably be happiest on at least Hard. Nightmare scares me though lol.
My point is that difficulty has a purpose. In the Q&A from Twitch, Laidlaw specifically said the goal for Easy was that you should only have to control one character the majority of the time and, while some thought is still needed, it's fairly easy to just sit back and play.
I sometimes get the impression that people expect the game to be everything to them (aka what they want) on Normal, but I do think there's a purpose for difficulty settings. Normal won't always be the best fit for a certain player, whether on the hard or easy end.

It's about time.
Uh, that is *exactly* what happens in-game. As many many many others have said before, healing isn't gone; it's just no longer nearly as prevalent as it once was, and combat/exploration has been entirely redesigned around this.
Wait, we thought healing spells are gone all together. I thought this is what Mike implied in the tweet.
So you're saying that healing spells are not gone 100%? Like, they need focus or something else to trigger? Besides potions i mean.
Because if it's like that, then it's fine.
They mentioned a group heal focus spell before. Not sure if it's still in. I'll fire off a tweet to Mike.Wait, we thought healing spells are gone all together. I thought this is what Mike implied in the tweet.

Dragon Age Keep @DragonAgeKeep
If you signed the NDA yesterday (September 29) you're now in the Keep! Welcome aboard, and enjoy!
There are definitely still healing options, it's just that they have been significantly de-emphasized. In the Twitch stream yesterday, he mentioned there were several options like a healing grenade and a high level spell which is a rapid revive feature. With no "injuries" in this game and with a slower revive available at any level to any character, I think we're sort of in Pokemon territory were "dying" is no longer terrible and could even factor in to some strategies or bosses (in addition to the many, many ablative options they want us to use to mitigate damage).
Btw that new vid includes Male Dwarf/Human, Female Elf/Human/Qunari https://www.youtube.com/embed/nZilJMncZ6g …

awesome, but why no female dwarf? ![]()
Just due to time of fitting in all race and gender combinations. I'd like to do more live streams so maybe next time ![]()

Please, for the love of the Maker, tell me bald is an option and not just buzzed or balding. Hate it when devs leave it out.
Yep I think there's a completely bald option.
User
Mike, I recall that you guys talked about a group heal spell Focus-based before. Is it still in?
Yep!
I asked the same thing yesterday and got ignored. Good to know I'll be able to have just a hint of healing for my mages! ![]()
Thanks to post, I had trouble doing it on my phone. You can put my name if you wantUser

Mike Laidlaw @Mike_Laidlaw
Yep!

I just saw the new Character Creation trailer and I love the music. Is that from the game? I just can't stop listening.
Sure is.

It's a testament to the beautiful world you and yours have created when the only thing to complain about is "We Want More". Ty
Hahaha. Good point!

I have a quick question! Will the quest log indicate which quests progress the plot and which are side quests?
Sure will!

Will do.

I'm still a bit hazy as far as how these focused abilities will work. Are they on a long cool down kind of timer? Do we have to accumulate focus points along our way and then spend than when we want to group focus? This sounds like a game dynamic that will take a lot of thought to decide when to use as it has a fair bit of power.
We have heard about the healing focus and one of the game demos showed a haste (or enemy slow down) focus as well. do we know about any other focused abilities?

It appears you gather Focus as you and your companions fight. It may take several fights to accumulate enough Focus to power some abilities however. Other that Group Heal & Haste, I can't think of any other Focus ability off the top of my head...
Edit: From Giant Bomb: http://www.giantbomb...ion/3030-35398/
New to Dragon Age: Inquisition is Focus. The protagonist and all companions accumulate focus into a single pool by doing damage to enemies. When a certain amount has been accumulated the player can pick any character and use a powerful ability or spell, not unlike Limit Bursts in the Final Fantasy games or Super Combos in fighting games.
Can someone tweet Mike Laidlaw and perhaps just ask how many focus abilities there are?

Your no fun. A good old fashioned meltdown is good for the soul.
The Reverse Haste (slow enemies down) and Firestorm are Focus based, I think.
I didn't see any indication that Vivienne was using up Focus when she cast Firestorm in the Pax 2013 demo.

I've tweeted a similar question to Mike this morning (will we see more examples of Focus-based abilities).
They said One time when they talked about focus that some powerful abilities are focus-based, and I think they mentioned firestorm.I didn't see any indication that Vivienne was using up Focus when she cast Firestorm in the Pax 2013 demo.
