Its EA at E3- they'll have a stream. Whether its Gametrailers or EA's own site, there will be a stream of EA's conference at E3.

Pretty sure some sites live stream the various publisher press conferences.

I know, but saying DA3 will be at E3 doesn't mean it's going to be at EA's press conference, hence my question.

Huh... I'll need to see the transcripts from the Investor call that just wrapped up but while DA3 will be at E3, it seems like it might not be slated for even a FY2014 release based on the titles listed by EA for their FY 2014 guidance. So we might not be seeing DA3 released until after March 2014.

Which would be a good thing.

I wouldn't read too much into that, but even still I'm totally fine with DA:I being delayed until after March 2014.  I think it will be a better game for it.

Yet as of 2 days ago...DA3 is still OFFICIALLY aiming for a 2013 release date.

I don't know why people can't take Mike Laidlaws word for it. If he says that's when they hope to release it, then that's when they hope to release it. It's showing no signs of being delayed so far, so until it does, I don't see why people would even assume it's going to be 2014.

Well, I know the developers get antsy about it (such as David Gaider) because things like release dates are apprently rather tenuous and fluid up to a point. So the possible results could be:

1. People think something is one way
2. Developers point out that it is only tentative, not a promise
3. People go "We understand" but continue to pin hopes on soemthing
4. Something gets changed
5. Some fans weep tears of rage: "BUT YOU SAID X!!!!!!"
6. The developers resignedly remind us that they said it wasn't a promise, but everybody keeps freaking out.

So in a nutshell, it's dangerous to assume something when it isn't official--it's as close to official as we'll get right now, sure. But it's still not an official release date. At least that's my understanding of it.

No, no, I agree. And I missed the "official" part of Mike's tweet.

I think part of the confusion is that they may be making a very different approach to marketing than they used to. We, as consumers, are used to ages and ages of buildup to a release--seems like they might be waiting much longer to reveal (which is great if it means less hanging around desperately waiting for a tiny bit of info to drop like baby birds waiting for their mother to drop food in their open mouths).

They haven't even released a teaser trailer for the game so there's pretty much zero chance of the game being playable on the show floor. Plus, they need to unveil the game to the general public. Having a booth with some mintors showing stuff doesn't do that. It will be part of the EA press conference.

No sign of being delayed, except for the fact that the game won't even be unveiled until the year is more than half over, you mean. There is that sign.

How does that equal delayed though? Isn't knowing when the game is actually going to released required?

I'm not really sure what you're asking exactly, but BioWare has never had such a short period between unveiling and release. An unveiling at E3 and a release this year would mean they have less than 6 months to market the game and collect pre-orders. Considering almost half of DA2's sales came from pre-orders I would say it's highly unlikely that they would intentionally limit their potential sales.

I was referencing the buildup to DA2. I see this waiting period as rather differently because there hasn't really been a reveal yet. Yeah, we know they're working on stuff, but the marketing hasn't really even started yet, imo.

With DA2, they released crappy screenshots and some general info in GameInformer and then a CG trailer, and it was MONTHS before we had ever seen gameplay or anything concrete. There was a lot of doubt and fear, Brockololly was about to have an aneurysm from asking for gameplay so much (I think it was him). The drip feed had gone dry.

I don't think the drip feed has even started yet, not officially. If it wasn't for that leak a while back, I don't think we'd even know the name of the game yet. I have no inside information, but I think Bioware's hand was a bit forced.

It isn't that I don't believe Mike... its just that I don't think he is going to tell us if the "real" release date was changed.

The target release date as of this winter for DA3 was Fall 2013. And, even though it looks like it might be a bit of a folly to do so, it still is. But they may know well and clear that it isn't going to be here by Fall 2013... but they also might not know, exactly, when it will be released.

So, rather than come out now and say "Well, due to some things we can't discuss, the target release is going to be pushed back to Winter 2014." And then, two/three/four months later, coming out again and saying "Well, looks like we'll need to push it back to Spring 2014..." to then be released in Spring 2014, which many people are projecting, would be DISASTER. People would be freaking out, saying the sky is falling, that DA3 is a total flop, that everything is falling apart at Bioware, etc.

Instead, they can stick with their "target" date of Fall 2013 as long as possible. And then once they have a better (or even final) idea of when the exact release date is going to be, they can reveal it then.

Point being... they have the least amount of changes possible. Because each time you push back a release date, it makes you look like things are behind schedule, or falling apart, or whatever people will assume. Instead of the fact that a temporary date is a temporary date and that it can be changed.

Well you said that they must be delayed because they haven't unveiled the game

"No sign of being delayed, except for the fact that the game won't even be unveiled until the year is more than half over, you mean. There is that sign."

I was replying to that by saying that in order for us to know when and if they are delayed, we'd have to know their target release date, which we don't beyond a general Fall 2013. Because most of us expect (because we don't know it's speculation) that the game will come out in December or late November at the earliest we're assuming that because they haven't said anything they must be delayed. But that's a little silly considering 1. We don't have a date to begin with and it could very well be December 20th and 2. We don't know their marketing plans. For all we know they have a killer plan or have determined a good spread to reach their biggest audience over five months.

Plus I'd imagine the two or three million players would be reached within the first two or three months.

Two million is DA2 numbers. According to Chris Priestly (and basic common sense), sales of this number are going to be viewed as unacceptable. Possibly even a failure. They have to (again, using Chris' words) do "better."

If they want to try to break 4 million to get ME3's numbers (let alone to shoot for the moon and get Skyrim's 10 million numbers), they'll need to set the bar a lot higher, both in terms of game design as well as how they market. We've all seen great games get lost in the shuffle in the past. The reason why was a poorly conceived marketing campaign.

Bioware can make the greatest game of all time and sell less than 3 million copies because not enough people will be engaged by what they are told about the game. I'm not saying DA3 will or won't do such things, but it is a possibility. And a rather unnecessary possibility, at that.
