I need to ask you guys something. Cuz idk if it's just me. Really. Idk if I'm being sensitive, but..last night I tweeted Mike this:

"Hey Mike, I do hope #DA3 will still leave room for humour & levity. idk if I can take another super bleak game..:'( jusayin"

And I was being serious. This does factor in to whether, or not, I'm willing to buy this game. For me ME3 was very depressing. Not because it was War. Galaxy/World...whatever on fire. That's every video game. Nothing new there.

Tell you the truth, idk why I found ME3 so depressing. It had some beautiful moments, but..something about it. Perhaps, it was just technical stuff. Like lighting; Lack of ambient noise--at least on the Normandy (unless one of my speakers blew out, and I don't know it). I didn't pay much attention to the score, but maybe there were a few too many sharp notes being hit.

These small things, whether you consciously notice them, or not, have an affect on the brain. And can cause you to feel depressed.

But was I wrong in this question? Was it offensive? Seriously. That was not my intent. And I realize they're not the same team, but they're the same company. And I didn't expect ME3 to be so depressing...IMO.

Anyway, Mike answers first w/this:

"As in, less bleak than DAII?"

Then 45 minutes later he follows up w/this:

"How about this: It won't be any bleaker than DAO. You know, the one where the world was under siege by ALL the darkspawn."

:mellow::?<_<

For some reason this pisses me off. Idk if it just needs a Tone Icon. Or I'm being sensitive? Because I feel like he just patted me on the head and called me Muffin, or Sweet Pea, or some such other patronizing, condescending crap.

Plz tell me I'm tripping. Because I like these guys, and I don't want to jump to conclusions. Especially over text which loses so much of the non-verbal info needed to register someone's intent.

edit: but her, it won't be any bleaker than DAO! Which I didn't find bleak at all. Serious, but not BLEAK--THIS HURTS YOU--kinda way. So:wizard:

yeah I read that I think you maybe just need to chill a little he didn't mean it in a condescending way how else was he supposed respond maybe he didn't get what you meet by bleek if you meet the music wise then maybe you should have put that in you tweet as will other wise he just gonna think you mean the story and respond that way because the stories are bleak it's meant to be that way there will always be darkness in the games that's why we have all the joking around it the dialog to lighten the mood

Dragon Age and Mass Effect are made by different people. It's not like you said "less bleak than ME3" in your initial question, so why would he automatically assume you were talking about it?

I need to chill, then? Okay.

*breathes*

It rubbed me the wrong way at the time. But then being on Twitter usually pisses me off.....madness and injustice and...ugh. So, by the time I checked the response, I was already grinding chile w/ my azz. Figurtively...

That's why I brought it to the "kitchen table". (edit: or rather the "Twitter Pit)

Thnx, guys.:wizard:

Agreed- but I doubt we'll be saying much of this when they come out with an ending in which our Inquisitor dies no matter his/her choices.

Ironically, people said the same about ME3 after DA2 came out.

That's because literally every time Bioware puts out a game, a large section of the fanbase immediately declares it the worst game they've ever made and decides their next game is the absolute last chance for the company.

Well, they did warn, but everyone said no, they surely have learned from the whole DA2 debacle. And besides...it's 2 different teams. So, no worries......

I liked how bleak DA:O was. Mark of the Assassin on the other hand annoys me because it tries to fit serious moments inbetween all the silliness and it comes across as anything but believable. And in it Orlesians are still the cliché we've been used to. Hopefully they'll be better fleshed out in DA3.

I loved DAO, but it didn't strike me as bleak. Even in my ultimate sacrifice playthru. At least not the way Mass 3 was bleak. DAO was a typical save the world game, which is fine by me.

MotA I enjoyed very much. It was a nice break around Act 3 for me. Although it was odd returning from all that color and merriment to DA2-Act 3. My family was dead, or gone. Anders was living in my house, but wouldn't even talk to me anymore w/ his black feather coat. And the rafters in the Hawke estate really creak.

I do hope they flesh out the Orlesians since we're going to be spending so much time w/them.

I only recently played both Legacy and Mark of the Assassin so I didn't feel that contrast between DLC and main plot, which is a good thing because I didn't enjoy the weird mix of humour and seriousness in MotA, as I've said before.

For now I can't compare DA:O's bleakness to ME3's as I haven't played it. Awaiting the trilogy for PS3 though. ;)

Edit: One thing MotA does have in its favour is the combat! Yes, it's still too fast and ridiculous, but at least the enemies are tougher, they have more varied skills (those damn Ghasts!), they are more smartly positioned and the last battle was very good fun! If the devs can just tweak down the speed a bit and produce animations not on par with Power Rangers', DA3 will have mighty cool combat indeed! (Chain commands wouldn't be amiss either! :o)

Try looking at it in another way, like "OMG I just got tweeted back by an intellectual demigod!" Then you won't find it so depressing  Posted Image

... then many of them buy it anyway.

Regarding bleakness, I agree that it's a bit unfair to compare the ME and DA teams, they have different writers, different artists and probably most importantly different producers who would decide things like overall tone.

ME3's strengths were in that tone, I thought - aside from the last ten minutes or so it was a great experience in storytelling and the bleak atmosphere really made it for me. The time capsule scene was one of the best moments in all three games.

The DA writers do love throwing jokes around, so I wouldn't be too worried about DA3 being an exercise in bleakness and doom. Hasn't the DA series generally been more about world exploration, anyway? That lends itself more easily to humour than a harrowing military shooter, I'd think.

hahaha, playing that in Act 3 with Anders being all sullen and emo all the time was weird (especially when he was all romantic and just a teeny bit "naughty" - still crack up every time that bit of banter comes up, espcially with Sarcastic Hawke).

I actually liked the DLCs (Legacy and MOTA) more than the main game.....*runs*
Maybe if I took him to nicer places instead of the Deep Roads all the time, he wouldn't have blown up the Chantry <_<

Though I do indeed wish Orlais had been a bit more "fleshed out" (Prosper was alright, everyone else, meh).

I liked the silliness, it was a nice break. Probably because I never thought DA2 was supposed to be the classic "grand hero saves the world" story (especially after the ending), that kind of DLC or campaign would have been beyond grating in DAO imo. You are just some nobody with some martial or arcane talent who got thrust into the thick of events and happened to come out on top.

Does that design/scale chart contain a Tevinter spearman riding a giant scorpion?

...Don't know if I missed out on the lore about this or if it's a new concept, but it pleases me.

Thought I was the only one who thought "scorpion." *whew*
It looks like they have some lion thing too. And I know the lroe mentioned elephant mounts. Does anyone think Tevinter will be similar to "lush African/ Arabian grassland/jungle/plains"? (I mean, it does get warmer the farther north you go)

Thanks for the link, added to OP.

(There look to be at least three or four factions worth of enemies there, plus generic archers, etc. Interesting range.)

:o

oooohhh. And then you can even look at the post its in the background:

I seee...

1) something about DeepStalkers (were there deepstalkers in DA2? I remeber them from DAO.).
2) Someone named "Mable"? I think
3)30d...Chickens?

And yes! That giant Scorpion w/ a rider! Also that person next to the Scorpion looks like they're holding some kinda..wat are those? Chains w/ very spiky painful balls on the end. You can swing around and cause all kinda damage. I hope we can use that weapon.

Is that an Orlesian dwarf on the bottom right?

Those beasts and minions look amazing. And my god, if see someone riding a Scorpion I'm gonna squee. And very likely run for my life...Aaaah! How awesome!

Damn but DA3 is looking like it's shaping up quite nicely. *knocks on wood*

It looks to me like they're pointing to a human mounted on a Tevinter species. All I know is, anything Tevinter IMperium excites me very much.

I noticed at the bottom right you can see "Archer" and it shows various types. Under that it appears to be warriors and you can see a dwarf...does that mean we can pick our race!? Who knows but I surely hope so...

Under "demons" I see "minions". I wonder if it means minions of the demons or...*gasp* pets? Probably just minions of the demons. You never know though.
