You do not have to pre order the game/buy it online.

 

If you subscribe to EA's early access you can simply download it and try it.

 

Your save will then carry over to the full game, as far as hard copy I am pretty sure I read it would work , but I am not 100% certain.

 

I just wanted to let you know I just talked to xbox and they say I have to purchase the game in order to use early access. I don't know exactly why if it's just a demo- but that's what this guy said.

 

Just talked to another one who confirmed what you said.

I would say yes since that's the very thing that got me hooked into Baldur's Gate (aka first BW game I have ever played)
