They made it far too easy for him to die and that's not cool, BioWare. Not cool at all! <_<

I saved him on my third pt, though. Ser Barris is life, Ser Barris is love.

Really?  I've only done the Templar side once and kept him alive on the first try.  Looted both side passages in plenty of time to come back and protect him too

From PC Gamer: Dragon Age: Inquisition – why you need to get out of the Hinterlands

http://www.pcgamer.c...he-hinterlands/

I personally didn't run into this problem, but in retrospect, this is probably the biggest design flaw in this game. I have a friend who just gave up on the SP completely because of it, and even though I told her to leave the Hinterlands, she has yet to pick up the SP again. It's very sad. And think that not every gamer has friends who got past the Hinterlands, or follows devs on twitter or other social media, or reads gaming news media. Not that I blame the devs, it's something that didn't occur to them at the time, and they ARE human after all. So yeah. As I said, probably the biggest design flaw in the game.

Edit: Oh! And even in gaming sites, I recently read an article (which was linked to in this thread) written by someone I'm almost certain never left the Hinterlands.

The biggest hint for leaving the Hinterlands to me was the cut-scene with Cullen and the Chantry bureaucrat when I returned to Haven; seemed that something greater was pressing at the moment. The 'Over My Head' encounters surrounding me in the Hinterlands were another.

Perhaps Bioware gave me too much credit, as well as others stubborn Players like myself.

I get what you're saying, but if you don't "blame" the devs for a what you consider a design "flaw" then who is responsible? Giving feedback isn't a bad thing, as long as it is respectful. Just saying. :)

Yeah, I don't think the game played to its strengths by putting by far the biggest and meatiest exploration area before the big first act story beats. As it is now, people feel like they need to finish the whole thing and there's no pressure to move the story forward.

So many reviews said the game lacked momentum and excitement before suddenly becoming really interesting about 15 hours in, and I reckon DA:I would've been better served by using Haven as an "exploration tutorial" then having a lot of critpath stuff.

Changing the Hinterlands into an optional big exploration area would've kept the content there for people that wanted it, but would've also got the player accustomed to the idea that main story quests could be separated by periods of sidequests and exploration.

I'm just really surprised the Hinterlands are such an issue for many; I left for Val Royeaux as soon as I got enough power. But then again, I'm hardly a completionist. And now that I think about it, I believe I learned from a Twitch stream or something that you could leave and then come back for more power... So someone who didn't obsessively watch all the promotional material might not have know that.

I love sandbox-style games, so for me - the more the merrier. ;)

It is a very different pace from the previous DA games and I can see the arugment for a more condensed, more story-focused "tutorial" exploration space to ease players into it. Perhaps Crestwood should have been first after reaching Haven?

While I can see the point of the arguments against having The Hinterlands as the first destination, I also think it's the most logical starting point for the Inquisition to start and it's reflected by the number of small-scale quests that incrementally increase your influence over the South.

I also don't think it's BioWare's responsibility to ensure that players leave the zones in an exploration-heavy game via railroading when the cues are all obviously pointing towards continuing the storyline at your leisure. Even the level requirement says: "Recommended levels 4 to 7".

I didn't feel forced to move on and I did so when I started feeling the urgency  that comes with putting off the main quest. That's my excuse. What's other people's? Completionism? Laziness? Lack of sense of urgency? Zero fks to give about the setting in a story-based RPG?

Perhaps they should place a sign with the word DON'T on it and have Varric hit the player with it if they were still in the HInterlands at level 8. :P

It could have been handled by unlocking some parts under certain condition, not entirely linear but not holding hands either, it's already being implemented in some areas. I also think a lot  of complain comes from the initial shock too, many people were not expecting this and had different mindset going in.

Well there are some solutions for blocking:

1) Plot-based: This is making the game more linear by blocking off points until a certain plot point is completed. This is already implemented to some degree by requiring

2) Resource-based: Block off areas that require power expenditure to unlock. This can be rather circular though as people may just continue spending power to unlock the zones rather than progress the main quest.

3) Level-based: Zones are already leveled to some degree. I think a subtle clue to gtfo is seeing a level 8 Rift at level 5.

I also don't think BioWare is responsible for people's falsely formed expectations. It's a new game with new gameplay and that was expressed several times over before launch. If people can't take control of how much entertainment value they can potentially gain from a product because of some form of traditional adherence, then that's their prerogative.

yep, this is the one i was talking about, not just whole areas, what was done in western approach and storm coast works well imo.

Wasn't that enough of a hint?   :P

This whole idea of people being frustrated by the Hinterlands and eventually quitting makes no sense to me as it's essentially analogous to running into a wall repeatedly rather than use the door that's a few meters to the left. Just walk through the door. Progress the main quest.

*shrug* Their loss.
