I am amazed at the number of people assuming game development is a altruistic business. The goal of most devs is to get paid for doing something they love. When the fans respond positively enough to ask for T-shirts, comic books and Novels based on your franchise then it only makes sense to provide more whenever possible.

 

 Star Citizen, a successful Kickstarter, put out incentives to get it's fans to give them more money. Incentives like T-shirts and in-game star ships. The recently successful Shadowrun: Hong Kong promised more story campaigns and a revamped matrix if people would dig deep and give a little more cash. CDProject Red is giving away "Free" DLC because they need a lot of people to buy their game straight out the door this time, and not pirate it like a lot of people did TW2 (Which was a dick move on the Pirates part)

 

Every single dev want's your money, and will provide whatever services/goods/etc, that's reasonably within their budget, needed to entice you to fork over your cash.
